Pres’ Says Hello Mopar Dudes! I hope all is well in MOPAR-LAND! What can I say about the Broken Hill tour?? Bloody Unreal! I had a ball, a big thank you to Bob and David on putting together a great annual tour. My brother Rob and I only made it to the Broken Hill leg of the tour and we just didn’t want to go home on the Monday. Thankyou to all the members who came along. It was great getting to know you all better. Also a big thankyou the Broken Hill Vintage Car Club, who looked after us while we were there. The high-light of the tour for me was driving Rob’s AP6 ute in convoy with everyone else on the drive up. It was such an enjoyable drive and that old ute just didn’t miss a beat! And having a few beers at night with the boys was great. The Bendigo swap meet went well for another year, picked up a few bargins and caught up with a few of the members of the Bendigo Chrysler car club. A big thanks to the members who helped out at the gates again this year, thank you David Brown, Bob Westwood, Andrew Brown and Brian Ough. It stands the club in good stead with the Fed-eration, showing to do our part. The club’s metal badges are now available, so pick one or two up to put on your cars or bar, they look fantastic. At $20 bucks each they’re a bargain! Thank you to Brian ough for organising them. It also looks that the club will have all they’re meet-ings next year at the Geelong showgrounds, so I urge all Geelong and Melbourne members (when they can) to get behind the meetings there, so we can build on our great club and have a home base to make it easier for all members. Members, don’t forget the Christmas break up is coming up soon at Blackwood, so I hope to see you all there. If not, I hope you all have a safe and great Christmas and a happy newyear and that next year will be a big MOPAR year!! Remember, Stay Beautiful! Ciao,

Eddie.Eddie.Eddie.Eddie.

Secretary's Scribble Hi All,

The meetings of late have been really interesting since the introduction of a ‘Guest Speaker’ slot into the Agenda. Bob Westwood and David Brown relayed their adventures of their Aussie Rally Trip. I felt quite proud when they said they amazed and surprised other drivers on the rally as their Val-iant AP6 wagon kept up with and even beat some of the other support cars! And Alan Fairweather gave a technical presentation on how to service a TorqueFlite transmission.

Organisation for the 2009 Show is progressing with the fly-ers printed and distributed underway. Sponsorship is also in hand with ‘Geelong City Motors’, a long time sponsor opting out for 2009. However, ‘Chrysler Australia’ has taking over the sponsorship for the same amount, including the Auction of a Chrysler for weekend use.

The 20th anniversary Club Badge, created to commemorate this auspicious date, is now available for purchase. The badge displays the blue and white pentastar along with the Clubs logo, and is selling for $20. If you don’t wish to attach the badge to your car, display stands are also available for $3.

This Newsletter is now also being published on the Club web-site www.baycitychryslerclub.org.au With this action we now have the option of reading the Newsletter online. Please let Alex (Editor) know if you would like to be taken off the mail-out distribution listing, in doing so the Club will reduce its paper usage, and is kinder on the environment as well.

After much deliberation it was agreed that, for a trial period of 12 months, meetings will now be held at the Geelong Racecourse clubrooms. A number of reasons for this change in venue were put forward with key points being it will give the Club a permanent home for Club to be able to display memorabilia and the fact that Bob & Dave will be away a lot 2009, but they are happy to hold big events at the ‘Chrysler Complex’.

Up and coming Club Cruises and other events scheduled through to March 2009 are as follows:

7th December 2008 – Christmas Breakup. BBQ lunch at Blackwood Mineral Springs. Leaving 5-Ways, Lara at 9:45am, meet other members at junction of Wer-ribee, Bacchus Marsh & Geelong Roads, also at 7 Eleven Bacchus Marsh (Ballarat Road end of Bac-chus Marsh).

11th January 2009 – Rock & Roll Festival, Geelong. White Eagle Club (departure details to be announced).

February 2009 – Fish n’ Chip nite, Altona

March 2009 – BCCCC Show n’ Shine & Cruise.

March 2009 – Chryslers on the Murray.

Until next time, drive carefully.

Cora Lynn Chrome Bumper Show & Shine

The day started at 8:30am, when we met at the carpark at Hoppers Crossing. Gerry and Maria turned up in their Dodge and with Sally and I in our CM wagon we were the only ones there. We cruised down the highway to Cora Lynn via Packenham. When we ar-rived at approx. 10am, the footy oval was well on the way to being full with beautiful old cars of all makes. It was a glorious sunny day—and we enjoyed every bit of it. They had approx. 1200 cars on display, as well as trucks, stationery engines, swap sites and 30 plus retro caravans, which were very interesting to look at. These all make show and shines are very interesting because you get to look at all the excellent makes and models.

All in all we had a great day out and the facilities were excellent.

Yours,

Brian.Brian.Brian.Brian.

Chrysler Restorers Show 2008

On the Sunday morning we meet with about 10 cars, all Australian Chryslers, ranging from a VE Safari VIP through to our GLX at the Burvale Hotel and cruised to Caribbean Gar-dens. By the time we arrived there were enough cars of all ages to fill the "normal" venue and so we got shoved out into the playground except for the Chargers. The turnout was great with an Airflow look alike Desoto, the usual Chargers on mass, one with a twin tur-bo'ed 318!!!, PT's, finned wonders et al. For mine the car of the show was the 1 of 485 1970 Chrysler 300H (Hurst Corporation Special). This was an attempt by Chrysler to re-launch the "Letter" car series that ended with the 300L in '65. The car it's self was an awesome ex-ample of the model, complete with raised white letter tyres, leather interior and great close up body. As always Caribbean Gardens turn on a great day, and is a show not to be missed ..... (Hint, Hint, only small number of cars from the club made a showing). Rob Spiller showed up in the Hardtop complete with Flames paint work (not really my thing but he seems happy enough), Brian had his SE, Theo's APE5 complete with the usual groupie's, Joe's Road Runner, which somehow only made it into the car park, Glenn Bond's Frog Squasher, Wendy's PT and our GLX. I would have taken lots of photo's but I got distracted by the iron, so you'll have to enjoy the pic of the Hurst Special.

The Broken Hill - Outback Run 2008 Part I

The idea of an Outback Tour developed over the last couple years - David and I have en-joyed extensive travel throughout Australia with the beauty , colour and excitement draw-ing us back again and again. This was an opportunity to share those experiences with other Club members whilst enjoying our cars on roads and under conditions that they were built for. We were delighted by the response and eventually 7 cars committed to the tour. They were , John and Linda Fawkes (CM Valiant Sedan ) , Brian and Sally Ough ( CM Valiant Wagon ) , Allen and Ann Fairweather (CL Valiant Sedan ) , our Tassie friends John and Mar-garet Price ( CL Valiant Sedan ) ,President Eddie and brother Robert ( AP6 Utility ) who sadly due to work commitments, would be with us only for the first 3 days, David and San-dra ( S Series Sedan ) and Judy and I (AP6 Wagon ).

Day 1 Friday 10th October The morning arrived crisp and clear, we had prepared well during the week so by our depar-ture time of 8.00am , we were ready..............we cruised up to Ballarat via Bacchus Marsh, all of us pleased to be on the road. With David and Sandra in the S Series and Judy and I in the AP6 Wagon , we made quick work of the 120Kms or so pulling off the Highway just

short of the Mildura turnoff to await the arrival of John and Linda in their gleaming CM and Allen and Ann in their CL ... ..... they had used every spare moment to make sure it was ready for the trip. Well done!! The ex-citement was evident, beaming smiles and lots of laughter gave the promise of a great adventure ahead .......and this was only the start. We quickly made our way up to St Arnaud where we found a beaut park and garden

area in the middle of town ..........a welcome cuppa with cake and bickies filled in the next half hour or so and then it was off to fuel up and head North to Sea Lake for our lunch stop. Again ,out came the sandwiches, cakes and biscuits ........... it was relaxing to chat amongst the group, getting to know each other better. Within minutes Brian and Sally arrived in their CM Wagon together with Eddie and Robert in their AP6 Ute ......... apart from John and Margaret who were awaiting us at Euston, the party was now complete. We decided that Manangatang was to be the place to stop for an ice cream so the Valiants were lined up in the street attracting attention from all the passer bys .......on leaving the town we passed the local pub where a wake was in progress. ....the wake had spilled out into the street and they waved and yelled encouragement to us. Amazingly, six days later at Boundary Bend, a lady who had been at the wake made herself known to us ......she recog-nised the Valiants !!!!!

Club Events

At Robinvale, it was time to fuel up again then over the mighty Murray River to Euston where we booked in at the Euston Club ... .... a beautifully maintained and modern Resort facility. Fabulous cabins overlooking the River awaited us together with our Tassie mates, John and Margaret who had enjoyed a few days touring via The Great Ocean Road and the Wimmera and Mallee regions arriving that morning . They had enjoyed a relaxing day visiting lo-cal wineries and other attractions. It was beaut to catch up with them again so we settled in for the traditional yarn over a cuppa and a nice cold beer whilst the girls shared a lovely chilled white wine ...... what a great way to end the first days travel. As evening came , we saun-tered over to the Club to share a meal to-gether.. . ..with lovely views over an ex-panse of lawn down to this majestic River , who could not be at peace with the world. While some of our group tried their hand at the pokies , those of us who have no skill in that area made our way back to our cabins for a nightcap before retiring.

Day 2 Saturday 11th October David had suggested a departure time of 8.30am and sure enough, we were up and ready on time .... the first stage today would be to Wentworth so following a photo shoot in front of the Club to remind us of our visit , it was off to Wentworth , firstly stopping for fuel and food at the lovely little bakery on the way out of town. As time was getting on , David and I decided to take the group down to a Park where the two great Rivers, Murray and Darling, come together ... ... l think we all agreed ,it is just a super spot and just perfect for our morning tea. Next stop would be lunch so with about 120Kms to do it was time to move .......at the 60km mark we would cross the now dry Great Darling River Annabranch, a former favourite camping spot of ours. Up until the beginning of the drought some years ago , the Annabranch carried a huge amount of water and was a haven for fish, bird and animal life .....the changed conditions now sadden us each time we pass ....... we can only hope that in the future the area can return to its former beauty.

The roadside stop at the dry Lake Popitah came up quite quickly ...... with toilets , shade and tables, it's a good spot to break the journey. Again, out came the sandwiches etc as we settled in for a good chat. The last 130kms or so into Broken Hill complete the scenery for this area,

Page 8: BCCC Newsletter Dec 2008

kangaroos , emus and wedge tailed eagles are in abundance. On reaching the "Hill", we made for the Caravan Park and booked into our cabins ..... although not as big as the previous night, they were new and lovely and clean. I don’t know who Allen and Ann knew, but they got a double cabin ... ... Mmmmmm. A quick freshen up and we were off to the sculptures located in the Living Desert Re-serve about 13kms to the west. These 12 sculptures in sandstone were completed in 1993 by artists from around the world ..........a must-see if you are in the region. By now we were taking plenty of photos and the mandatory team or group shots were being enjoyed by everyone ......particularly the photographers !!!!!! We had intended to have the evening meal out at the sculptures however we had spied the great facilities back at the Park ... ... beaut BBQ area with tables , chairs and toilets all within a few minutes of our cabins so it was back there that we shared the rest of the evening...... again just a superb day of travel , sightseeing and vibrant con-versation.

Day 3 Sunday 12th October Our plan was to meet our Broken Hill Veteran and Vintage Car Club ( BHWCC ) hosts at 10.30am at an agreed venue in town so it was up early to get our cars up to the car-wash ....we wanted them sparkling for the occasion. Sure enough, at the agreed time Bill Kitchen (Morris Minor 1000) and his colleague John Neill (Valiant CM) together with their wives and a number of other members complete with mobile BBQ arrived. Bill took us on a leisurely drive through town then out to the Mundi Mundi Lookout just past Silverton. From the Lookout you may feel you are on the edge of the world with the flatland plains stretching out to the West for an eter-nity ..... spectacular !!!!!!!! It was then another 6kms onto the Umberumberka Reservoir .... one of the two reser-voirs that supply the Broken Hill region ........w hat an oasis with plenty of trees, shrubs

and birdlife. We enjoyed sit-ting under the shade of the desert gums whilst getting to know our hosts. It was then time to get back to Silverton for photos and a couple of refreshing pre-luncheon drinks. The Silverton

Hotel has quite an amount of film memorabilia .......many Australian film makers have used Silverton, its historic buildings and the surrounds as their stage. And of course, the Mad Max replica Falcon parked in front of the Hotel must be seen to be believed. Photos complete, it was off to Penrose Park where our hosts had set up the BBQ trailer ........the aroma from the sausages, hamburgers, onions and salads was overpow-ering so we were soon enjoying a delightful meal ....thanks to Bill and his team!! Penrose Park is a great place to visit, it has gas and wood BBQ's, powered and unpow-ered caravan and camping sites, lovely clean amenities, a large hall available for hire, a playground for the children and many other features. It was so good sharing time with our hosts, talking cars and looking over the different types of vehicles that they had brought along. From Bruce Lord's 1940 Plymouth Sedan to Brenton and Marilyn Mar-tin's 1920’s White Truck, Jaguars and Holdens, they were just great vehicles , lovingly cared for and of great interest to all of us. All too soon it was time to start packing up but not before we had received an invita-tion to visit Brenton and Marilyn's truck restoration facility and Bruce Lord's incredible collection for the following day. John Neill also invited us to visit the Club Rooms next morning to view their memorabilia and to purchase car badges and clothing patches as a memento of our visit. Pres. Eddie formally thanked our hosts for their generosity and friendship, presenting their Club members with two of our stubby holders. They were gratefully received ......just a small reminder of our common bond. While some of our members continued to explore this amazing little outback town, the rest of us made our way back to the Park to prepare for our evening out at the Democ-ratic Club. Pre-dinner drinks were enjoyed at our cabins then it was off to the Club to claim a large table where we could chat about the day's exciting events. A beaut meal was enjoyed by all, those with the pokies skills stayed on to try their luck while others headed back to their cabins for a nightcap and a peaceful nights sleep.

LIBERATOR AND Pt COOK AIR BASE CRUISE NOV 08

We all met at Werribee at the B24 Liberator Restoration Hangar at 10-00 am, on

what was reported to be a wet cold day. Well it wasn’t wet, not a drop of rain fell on

our cars all day (so much for weather reports). There were some 26 adults, a couple

of ankle biters (no offence, they were most welcome) in 13 cars that attended the Lib-

erator display, from both BCCCC and the “R and S” car clubs. We were met by

some of the very friendly members of the restoration group, who broke us up into

small groups for a personalised tour of the work shop, and their pride and joy “The

Liberator”. These guys spoke about the Liberator with a love and passion that I

thought was only reserved for Valiant owners. The time passed very quickly, with

many questions asked from an interested group. We were lucky to be treated to a

working demonstration of one of the Turret guns (minus the bullets). This part of the

day finished with a sausage sizzle (sponsored by BCCCC) organised and catered for

by my wife Val (thanks love) and cooked by yours truly.

We then headed off in convoy via the back roads to Pt Cook Air Base. The careful

planning of getting names, rego numbers in advance (to speed up the entry process to

the base) sending emails to the base etc resulted in the security officer saying “don’t

know anything about this, you will all have to fill in the book”. Well you could

imagine that this caused a bit of a log jam at the gate, and delaying our entry by about

20 mins. Once we got past security, we headed over to the air display of a CAC

Winjeel plane, which started with an explanation and demonstration of the flight pre

check. The plane took off after a short delay, where the plane refused to start

(Warren thought it was due to carbon on the valves), we offered to jump start the

plane, and an offer to push start the plane was also declined. The plane did several

low level circuits of the base, and then landed successfully in front of us. The flight

displays are run on 3 days nearly every

week of the year, featuring different

planes each time. We then went to the

static display in- side the Museum,

where we walked around at our own

pace, and were im- pressed with the ex-

cellent standard of the displays. Around

3-00pm, we called it quits, and headed

off home.

I would like to thank Dave and Campbell Miller, Ron Taaffe, Tony Maher and all the

other folks down at the Liberator for making us all welcome, the members from the R

and S club, particularly Grant who drove down from Wodonga in his S Series, and

the support of The BCCCC members who all helped to make the day a success, and

especially to David Brown and his helpers for fixing Grant’s indicators. Thanks

again for all your support, it makes the effort worth while.

LITTLE KNOWN CHRYSLER FACTS

♦ In 1924 Ralph DePalma (leading American land speed contender and winner at

Indianapolis) won the Mount Wilson Hillclimb (near Los Angeles) driving a

Chrysler at an average speed of 22.1 mph over the 9.5 mile course.

♦ The highest speed achieved by a piston engined car (prior to 1976) was 418.50

mph over 666.686 yards (flying start). The car called Goldenrod, driven by

American Robert Summers, on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1965 was powered by

four petrol injected Chrysler engines giving a total capacity of 27,924 cc and de-

veloping about 2400 b.h.p.

11

The Pentastar

As the Forward Look styling cycle was ending, Chrysler President Lynn

Townsend sought a new logo usable by all of Chrysler's worldwide divisions and sub-

sidiaries, automotive and non-automotive, on packaging, stationery, signage and ad-

vertising. He wanted something that would be immediately identifiable as Chrysler's

mark to anyone who saw it, in any culture. In September 1962, the company adopted

a logo named Pentastar, made of five triangles arranged so their bases formed the

sides of a pentagon. The Pentastar was simple and easily recognizable, even on re-

volving signs, and was not tied to any particular automotive styling feature as had

been the previous Forward Look logo. Because the symbol contained no text, it facili-

tated Chrysler's expansion in international markets. The Pentastar was extensively

used on dealer signage, advertisements, and promotional brochures, as well as on

Chrysler products themselves.

Chrysler-Plymouth literature, advertisements, and dealership signage used a

blue Pentastar or a white one on a blue background, while Dodge used a red Pentastar

or a white one on a red background. Divisional logos such as Dodge's Fratzog were

gradually phased out until, by 1981, all Chrysler divisions used only the Pentastar. All

car brands (Valiant, Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Imperial, Hillman, Humber, Sun-

beam, Singer, Simca), truck brands (Fargo, DeSoto, Dodge, Commer, Karrier), and all

the other Chrysler divisions and services — air conditioning systems, heating, indus-

trial engines, marine en- gines, outboard motors,

boats, transmissions, four- wheel drive systems, pow-

dered metal products, adhe- sives, chemical products,

plastics, electronics, tanks, missiles, leasing, finance

and auto parts — were iden- tified by the Pentastar.

Tech Tip

Do you know how old your tires are? If you are like most consumers, you don’t. The reason is simple; this information has been hidden

from you for a very long time. The tire industry has known for many years that old tires are dangerous.

Test data performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Admini-stration (“NHTSA”) proves that after a tire reaches six years of age, the chances of catastrophic tread separation increase substantially.

WHY DO TIRES BECOME MORE DANGEROUS OVER TIME?

A tire's biggest foes are heat and oxygen. Over time, heat and oxy-gen break down a tire's internal adhesive bond between the various

layers of the tire’s internal laminate structure. This phenomenon is known as thermo-oxidative degradation.

Thus, tires older than 6 years have been exposed to prolonged heat and oxygen, causing the tire to become a safety risk. Consequently, any such tires should be removed from service and destroyed.

HOW CAN I KNOW THE AGE OF MY TIRES?

In order to know the age of your tires, you must read the D.O.T. code on the tire. The D.O.T. code is located on the bead area of the

tire. The last four digits of the D.O.T. code show the week and year of

manufacture. For example, in the picture below, the last 4 digits of the D.O.T. code end in “5107." This tells us that this tire was manu-factured in the 51st week of 2007.

When purchasing new tires for your vehicle, you should always check the D.O.T. code first. If the tire was manufactured more than

six months earlier, consider asking for newer tires. Even though the tires have never been used, thermo oxidative degradation affects

tires even when not in use.
