CELEBRATING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND SUCCESS

Each year we hold Stage or Grade assemblies to recognise and celebrate students’ achievements throughout the year. We are extremely proud of our students as they commit to striving for their personal best. Assemblies will be held in the school hall on the following days: Year 2 Friday 2 December 9.30 am Stage 3 Monday 5 December 9.15 am Year 6 Graduation Assembly – Monday

5 December 5.30pm – 6.30 pm Year 1 Friday 9 December 9.30 am Kinder Monday 12 December 9.30 am We hope you can join us in celebrating the students’ achievements. FAREWELL MRS PRATT

Mrs Janet Pratt has announced her retirement, finishing at the end of the school year. We would like to say congratulations and thank you to Mrs Pratt for her fabulous career in educating and caring for students.

Mrs Pratt began teaching in 1979 in Sydney’s west before coming to BBPS in 1987. Janet’s contributions to our school go well beyond her abilities as a terrific classroom teacher. She has been involved in a myriad of extra curricula programs over the years, particularly in the creative arts and dance areas. Janet’s capacity to provide rich learning experiences, care and compassionate support for her students and families and unfailing support and help to her colleagues have been valuable assets to our school.

We will miss you Mrs Pratt – but wish you nothing but the very best as you enter this next chapter of your life.

EXTREME WEATHER POLICY

The education, safety and wellbeing of our students is always what drives our decision making at BBPS.

We have an Extreme Weather Policy to ensure that on extremely hot days, we are able to keep the students safe and as comfortable as possible. On these days, the students do not go out onto the playground to play, instead, students go to designated areas of the school that have air-conditioning to play indoor games and activities. A number of other strategies are used throughout the day to support the students including the free availability of drinks for students, strategies to keep the buildings as cool as possible and passive activities replacing physical activities. As we move into the hotter months, we will follow these procedures when necessary.

STUDENTS LEAVING

As we move into our planning phase for 2017 if you have a student at Bateau Bay PS who is NOT in Year 6 and will not

be returning to us next year would you please let us know. The number of students at our school affects the planning for classes, teachers and school programs so the earlier we have information the better. Please write a note to your child’s teacher or drop it into the office.

RELIEVING DEPUTY PRINCIPAL ROLE

Mr Waite will be taking leave for the last 2 weeks of this term. Mrs Spier will relieve Mr Waite during this time. Please contact her if you have any queries regarding student wellbeing, playground or bus issues. Mrs Katie Duff (Fitzgerald) will be acting as relieving Assistant Principal for Stage 1, working closely with Mrs Spier.

Life Education Survey: The Life Education program has been booked for 2017. The school would like to ask parents their opinion on whether Life Education should continue at Bateau Bay P.S. beyond 2017. The rising costs of attending the program and the availability of other online courses has the school looking at the relevance of Life Education. We welcome your thoughts about the Life Education program – please fill in the survey located at the back of the newsletter and return it to the front office by the end of term. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

As this is my final article for 2017 I would like to wish all Bateau Bay P.S. families a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Have a great holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone back in 2017. My best wishes go out to Year 6 as the next phase of their educational journey commences with the entry into high school.

CHAPLAIN CHAT

CHAPLAIN CHAT

The Temperature is RISING and so are the Emotions

Have you noticed that an increase in emotions at your house lately? Some year 6 children are starting to think ahead to the unknowns of High School, some are finding it harder to get up in the mornings because they are staying awake longer with the sunlight, friendships are a little more strained and it’s harder to concentrate. Many people are at their capacity. You are not alone!

There are a few things you can do to reduce the anxiety. Have a read through the list below and pick one to start with that might suit you and your family. Hang in there, Christmas break is on its way!

1. Technology free time – even just a day here or there, this helps children engage with wider than a screen and helps give perspective to our thoughts and emotions.

2. Have mindful moments – take time to look, smell, hear and feel what’s around. Time at the beach, a park or playground help with catching our breath when we feel busy.

3. Just do today – leave tomorrow’s worries aside. You can look at them tomorrow.

4. Explore and be curious – engage with your fun side. Head to the top of a mountain, explore a bike track, try out a new café, do something crafty, meet a neighbour.
