Ponderings of Patience
A Little Encouragement
Young Jim loved to sing, but he was quite shy and was terrified at the prospect of being in front of other people. Yet, it was the Christmas Season, and as a member of his church’s preschool choir, The Little Cherubs, Jim dutifully marched up the stairs to the chancel with the other children. Jim started up with the others as their song began, but overwhelmed by his timidity, young Jim quickly turned around and sang to the back wall! Although still very much an introvert, young Jim in grade school, found great solace in putting the power of his imagination to work writing wondrously detailed little stories. Mrs. Richardson, Jim’s third grade teacher noticed just how skilled of a writer he was. Yet, she knew something had to be done to help young Jim break out of the shell of his timidity. Thus, while she praised young Jim for his writing talents, she also encouraged him to read each of his imaginative tales to the students in the first grade class just down the hall. Suffering through childhood asthma, Jim couldn’t play sports outdoors with the other children in his neighborhood; yet, with the encouragement of his mother and other adults, he took piano lessons. Jim became such a talented pianist that, he joined a quartet that entertained audiences at the local theatre before the Saturday matinee, and he also accompanied his church’s organist for Sunday services. Those who knew Jim only in his adult years would have never imagined him to have ever been so very timid or introverted. For Jim became a rather gregarious, industrious, people-centered owner of a rather prosperous advertising company. Inspired by his creative prowess with the written word and his outgoing, friendly demeanor, Jim became a mentor to dozens of commercial advertising students at a nearby university, and his company which employed over a dozen people, supported a clientele of nationally known corporations. Additionally, Jim became a nationally known speaker at conventions; an inspiring elder in several churches, and an accomplished pianist who inspired so many in worship. (continued on page 2)

CHOIR PRACTICE will resume on Wednesday, September 11th
at 7:00pm in the Choir Room. If you would like to join, talk to
Andrew Schmidt.
(continued from page 1)
Jim’s tale of success reminds us that many people become remarkably successful because caring people in their formative years willingly took them under their wing and helped them awaken their personality and potential. By his own example, Jesus showed us the importance of genuinely caring for the children among us in tangible and meaningful ways. For even as his disciples tried to shun away the mothers who wished to have Rabbi Jesus bless their young children, Jesus declared, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14) as he sat each of them on his lap, spoke to them and blessed them. As we are so richly blessed with the many children who share in worship and Sunday School each and every Sunday at Barry Christian Church, all of us are equally privileged to do what we can to encourage the spiritual and personal growth of each and every child. Our own Jim Frentrop and the Education Committee guided by Kathie Connell’s leadership, are always seeking persons to assist with our children’s church held during the second half of worship and to also assist in our children’s Sunday School classes between services. As we approach 2020, we are also endeavoring to afford a part-time director for our children and youth, realizing that the added leadership will help us strengthen meaningful relationships with our children and youth while building substantive programs for them along the way. But as the story of young Jim reminds us, it is often through simple avenues of encouragement, that we can help the youngest among us become the inspiring leaders of tomorrow’s church and community. Be in prayer about how God may give you guidance in encouraging the young people in our midst! Pastor Dennis

BACKPACK THANKS!!
Once again, you all have made the School Supplies Drive amazing and possible! We could not do it without you. We were able to give out 136 backpacks this year. Those bags were loaded with supplies as well. Not only were we able to accommodate our regular school supplies number, we were able to accommodate our overflow list as well, and then some! That is a blessing you ALL made happen. We were also able to donate miscellaneous supplies to Synergy's Safehaven House. They couldn't have been more appreciative. So, Thank you to everyone from our faith partners, to volunteers, and to our wonderful men and women in Blue who helped hand out the supplies. You all made a difference in a childs life.
Peace & Blessings, Rita Pearce, Executive Director
WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
Please welcome Lori Hohner; her daughter, Michelle Clayton; and Michelle’s daughter, Paige Jones; as each of them came forward to make their confessions of faith at the close of the 11:00 Worship Service on Sunday, August 18th. Jim Frentrop assisted the family during this special time, as he has especially been most helpful to Paige and her brothers, Evan and Javon, as they have been in Children’s Worship since the first of this year and Jim has also led the family in a Christian Beliefs program. We are anticipating the Service of Baptism for mother, daughter and grand-daughter, on the second Sunday of September, as we hope Michelle’s husband, Larry, will also be free from work and able to attend. Contact telephone numbers are as follows: Lori: 816-686-3124 and Michelle: 816-315-3174.

Is your giving to the
support of Barry
Christian Church up
to date?
Trunk or Treat: Saturday, October 26, 2019 I would like to invite you to join in the fun at Barry Christian Church’s Trunk or Treat event! This year Trunk or Treat will be on Saturday, October 26th from 4-6 pm. This will be our 6th year for this event and each year it has grown. This is a great chance to meet families in our community. We greet the kiddos, hand out goodies, play games and most importantly share a little kindness with our neigh-bors. Decorating your vehicle can be as simple or as creative as you want. You can participate in many different ways: 1) Decorate your vehicle’s “trunk” and pass out candy.
2) Help direct traffic/kiddos or help with games or craft tables.
3) Donate candy to pass out – you can place it in the box in the foyer.
4) Pray for good weather, good attendance and everyone’s safety.
If you have never been involved, please consider something new...I promise it isn’t too scary! Blessings!!! Anna Eacret 816-914-9776
