38-39 Technical Details
Why choose paving installation over other methods?
• Paving your driveway or patio adds value to your property.
• Quick to install – Paving an average driveway can be completed in 3 days (including preparation).
• Appearance – Paving enhances the look of any property.
• Varity of colours, textures and finishes – Paving to complement both traditional and contemporary surroundings.
• Durable – Paving bricks are long lasting and extremely durable with little maintenance.
• Bespoke design - There are so many variations of designs and patterns in laying paving, no job is the same as another.
Choosing paving
Are you looking for inspiration or ideas on paving to create a stunning garden or driveway to enhance your home? There are so many different options to choose from, take your time with your decision and be creative. If you are having difficulty in deciding, we can answer any questions you may have or recommend what would work best for your perfect paving project. Here is some advice and tips on helping you choose the perfect paving.
Step 1 - Choosing a colour
The key to choosing a successful paving colour is considering
the colour scheme of your property and its surroundings in the
garden from plants to walls. Decide if you want to compliment
your house or make a statement by going with a contrasting
palette.
Step 2 - Choosing a paving block style
• Are you looking for a traditional
cobbled paving brick with that rustic
natural weathered appearance?
Choose Kingspave Cobble or Bracklin.
• Do you require a modern smooth paving?
Choose Castlepave Smooth
or Larchfield.
• Are you looking for an exquisite,
elegant paving brick to capture the
sparkle and beauty of your property?
Choose Granite Paving.
• Have you been specified to install
permeable paving block for flood
prevention? Choose our Permeable
Paving Range.
Step 3 -Choosing a complimentary product
• Have you considered adding a feature circle design? Circle kits are the best
way to start any circular design as the kit includes all the specific shaped
bricks to complete your circle pattern.
• Setts are small cobbles that are used to add the finishing touch to any paving
project. Their versatility make them ideal for a border, to extend circles or
for a curved path.
• To achieve that perfect finish, we offer kerbs to complement any of the
Barleystone paving bricks. Kerbs are adaptable for use in pathways, the
construction of steps or in any paved area.
Step 4 - Choosing a pattern
• Random: Our 3-Size Mix is varied brick sizes within each pack, giving
a random laying pattern. This is available in the Kingspave Cobble and
Castlepave Smooth ranges.
• Herringbone: Ideal for areas with heavy traffic but can be used for any
installation.
• Basketweave: Mainly used for areas with light foot traffic but can also be
installed in driveways.
• Stretcher Bond: Ideal for narrow spaces like pathways as it can be designed
to appear wider.

Permeable Paving RangeBarleystone Permeable Paving has been designed to meet the demands and standards to reduce flood and pollution risk.
The extra wide spaces facilitate the flow of water between the layers below. To ensure the correct movement of water, permeable paving needs to be designed and we can advise on a complete system which includes Barleystone Permeable Paving and certified sub-base material. In some situations water can be harvested and filtered for certain house hold and garden use. See our sister company O’Reilly Oakstown Environmental www.oreillyoakstown.com

How to install Barleystone Paving Blocks for driveways, patios or pathwaysStep 1: PlanningA good plan is essential to any paving project. Draw a diagram of the area you want to pave, noting any existing structures such as buildings, fences and the edge of the garden.
To ensure adequate drainage, you will want to slope the paving away from the buildings in the direction of normal drainage.
Step 2 ExcavatingPrepare your area by removing existing driveway or garden for a patio. Excavate minimum of 250mm to allow for 150mm of hardcore, 50mm of sand and 50mm/60mm for your block paving. Soft ground may require a greater depth.
Step 3 Compact the HardcoreLay the hardcore to a minimum depth of 150mm. Laying the base outside the boundaries of the project will make your project more stable. Thoroughly compact the sub-base using a vibrating plate compactor. Ensure you don’t have any dips or bumps. It is essential that the base is well compacted and there are no soft spots. If any area is still soft, it should be dug out, removed, replaced with more hardcore and re-compact.
Step 4 Installing the Edge RestraintsEdge restraints should be installed to ensure paving blocks remain firmly in place and prevent them from creeping sideways. They should be used on every side that is not supported by a solid structure. You can use PVC, aluminium, concrete or pressure-treated wood. Concrete kerbs are recommended because they are easy to install, are very durable and will accent your paving.
Step 5 Manhole CoverIf there is a manhole cover it must be set in place by using a mixture of sand and cement making sure it is as the correct height and fall. The manhole lid must be placed inside the outer frame to stop anyone from falling down the manhole.
Step 6 Setting the Sand Before laying your paving, lay a 25mm-40mm bed of coarse grit sand to the entire area, 20mm higher than the finished height to allow for compacting. Level the sand to roughly the correct height and compact it using a vibrating plate. Screed the layer to the correct level. The paving block should be 5mm higher than the finished height to allow for the final compacting once all the block paving is in place.
Step 7 Laying Paving Starting in a 90º corner, lay the bricks in the pattern you have chosen. Work outwards keeping all joint lines straight. Periodically check the alignment of the rows by stringing a line along the front edge of the leading row. Do not disturb the sand bed as this may cause the laying pattern to become distorted. To ensure an even distribution of colour and texture mix and lay blocks from at least 3 packs of block paving. Install all full paving blocks before cutting in the edges.
Step 8 Cutting Once the alignment has been checked the edges can be cut in. Measure and mark the blocks to be cut with a marking crayon. A diamond blade wet saw, paver splitter or a hammer and chisel can be used to cut pavers. Always wear safety glasses.
Step 9 Compacting and JointingSweep the surface to remove any debris. Spread Kiln-dried jointing sand over the paving, sweeping it into the joints, leaving surplus on top. Use a vibrating plate compactor to compact the paving bricks into the sand. The excess sand on the blocks will cushion the surface and the vibration will assist in filling the joints.
Step 10 FinishingSweep the remaining excess dry sand over the surface filling the joints and it is now ready to be used. As the jointing sand settles and the rain compacts it, it will require a top-up over the first few weeks.
