There’s nothing dull about Ocean Beach! Member and community news . . .

Early October:

The OB Town Council ‘s Annual Dinner was really fun. Their new board of directors is full of energy. Their new President is Gretchen Kinney Newsom (parade chairperson). She’s awesome. Dave Martin, owner of Shades, retired from the board and is the out-going President. It was a great evening - Interim Mayor Todd Gloria spoke briefly but because he has two full time jobs right now, he couldn’t stay. Chet Barfield, the Mayor’s rep for OB, read the entire proclamation. Great dinner, wonderful camaraderie. Gary Gilmore won Citizen of the Year - congratulations! For more information about their winners please check out OBTownCouncil.org

OB OKTOBERFEST - What a roaring success

this year! I think this was the best one yet. We had so much publicity from the CW6 and KPRI. That’s Stacie from Brown Marketing Strategies in the hot dog outfit. The publicity for Ocean Beach was terrific and the event brought in about 20% more people than we had the year before. Thanks to all our volunteers who helped with the OB Community Foundation’s Brat Trot in the morning, the volunteers at the entrance to the beer gar-den, the volunteers who poured, and the volunteers who helped Clau-dia in the booth area at Veteran’s Plaza. Check out all the awesome photos that Troy Orem took of the event. For even more photos, go to our website OceanBeachSanDiego.com and click on Photos at the top and you can pick which photo albums you want to look at.

Most recently, on Oct. 24th we had the . . .

Annual OBMA Awards Celebration and it was raucous and so much fun for all of us. Check out the first pictures from our photogra-pher Troy Orem of the event. Thanks Troy! Each year, OBMA committees nominate businesses for their excep-tional efforts and accomplishments throughout the year. 2013 was no exception - in fact, it was even more of a celebration than normal because the association also celebrated its 35th anniversary. The room was filled with kazoos and whistles and the crowd was entertained with original music celebrating the community and per-formed by Billy Lee & The Swamp Critters. Ryan and Sevy from Glasz Productions also kept things moving - they started by leading the group in the

OB Pledge of Allegiance, added

some raffle prizes for people with answers to OB trivia questions and kept the night going with great music and energy. Luckily, Troy Orem was onsite to capture the fun with loads and loads of great photos! As always, Union Bank, our major sponsor of the event, provided fan-tastic drink area customer service. . .

The Annual OBMA Awards Celebration continued from page 2

We were honored to share the celebration with Assemblymember Toni Atkins, as well as receive proclamations celebrating the community from Interim Mayor Todd Gloria and County Supervisor Ron Roberts. Assemblywoman Toni Atkins recognized the OBMA for their continued efforts in the community and commendations for productivity in the com-munity. “You are problem solvers, that’s what you do,” she said. “You look to make things happen in this community and address issues, and that’s what makes you so successful.” Here is Toni with Byron Wear (he was our coun-cilman a number of years ago and loves OB). Sterling McHale represented Supervisor Ron Roberts, Chet Barfield represented Interim Mayor Todd Gloria, and Roberto Alcantar represented Senator Marty Block.

As you can tell, the crowd enjoyed themselves, had a fantastic dinner and joined in with all the singing and birthday craziness!

When asked how many people in the audience had volun-teered this year in Ocean Beach, almost the entire room of guests raised their hands. That’s incredible and explains a lot about how Ocean Beach residents and merchants can get so much done to help the neighborhood. Make sure you mention that you are thankful to all the local mer-chants who donated food and gifts for the Annual Celebration. They are listed on the next page!
