Two Types of Signals

Active

– Placed on target line with a transmitter

Passive

– Present on target line

• Three ways to place active signal on line

– Direct connection

– Clamping

– Induction

Direct connection

– Connect ground clamp

to stake

– Connect to target line

– Plug cable into

transmitter

Never connect to live

– Place clamp around

target line

– Plug cable into transmitter

– Turn on transmitter

• Induction

– Unhook direct connect leads or clamp.

– Place transmitter parallel to target line

– Turn on transmitter

Walk in arc around

transmitter (25’-50’)

Pinpoint line

Rotate receiver todetermine direction

Trace and check depthestimates

Lost signal

– Walk in circle to detect bend or tee

Unstable signal

– Mark as hand dig area

Suspected power interference

– Sweep area in power mode

Gain too high

– Receiver not functioning properly

– Lower gain

Target line has common ground

– Isolate target line

• Signal transferring to other lines

– Lower frequency

– Lower power level

– Use direct connect or induction clamp

– Move ground stake

– Apply signal where target line is farthest

from other lines

– Drops can be located if TV is on

– Current must be flowing to locate

• Make visual check of area

– Recent trenching

– Line markers

– Lines running down a pole

– Gas meters

– Utility risers

– Drains or manholes

Sweeping the area

– Use peak antenna

Use sweeping pattern

until signal is detected
