Australasian University Safer Community Symposium: Getting started About the symposium The safety of students and staff is a key priority for all Australasian universities. Presently there is no peak organisation in the tertiary sector with a focus on campus safety and the assessment of behavioural threats. The Symposium aims to establish an Australasian University Safer Community Association and develop terms of reference for the ongoing functioning of this peak body.The Symposium will provide opportunities for observing leading practices across the sector, with partner institutions providing details of organisational structures and services that are provided through Safer Community Units or equivalent risk and threat assessment units. The Symposium will hold peer and expert-led presentations on shared themes and current issues facing the sector. Over the last decade he has consulted for several of the world’s leading extortion response companies, specialising in kidnap for ransom and piracy events. He is most recognised as one of Australia’s longest held hostages (outside of war time) having endured 460 days of captivity in Mogadishu, Somalia between 2008/2009. Nigel currently works with the University of Tasmania in a number of areas including policy, project and case management. He is part of the new Safe and Fair Community Unit that deals with complex behaviours, wellbeing concerns and sexual misconduct allegations. Dr Lorraine Sheridan is a chartered forensic psychologist and an international expert on stalking and harassment. She completed Europe’s first PhD on stalking and has so far published four books and more than 50 papers on the subject. Her research has taken an applied, interventionist angle and she frequently trains professionals involved in investigating and managing stalking and other crimes. She also advises on policy, and has advised a number of governments. She is a police accredited offender profiler and compiles psychological reports related to offenders. Keynote speakers
