AES MINISTRIES Augustana/East Sveadahl Lutheran Churches APRIL NEWSLETTER PASTOR’S COLUMN John 9:10-11 10 …they kept asking him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" 11 He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, "Go to Siloam (a pond) and wash.' Then I went and washed and received my sight." I keep thinking about how confusing these times are. I have an urge to pinch myself and ask if this is really real. A month ago we were excited about Spring, the weather was gentle, snow was melting. It was good. And then this new theme started becoming more persistent. Abruptly it transformed from being a news item elsewhere to being a problem here. Like a cold wind, it blew in as a threat, turned into a pandemic, and flipped everything upside down. Along the way, I have a whole series of new words added into my vocabulary. Words like social- distancing, self-quarantine, immunocompromised, and covidiot plus that word coronavirus itself. Confusing times breed uncertainty and lack of focus. They affect our perceptions of where we are going and vision for what needs to be done. There is nothing like changes in routines to bring on anxiety. Where do we go from here? How long will this last? What will come next? All of those questions are echoing right now. In the Gospels, there is a story of Jesus healing a blind man (John 9). Jesus touches him and then sends the guy to the bathroom to wash his face and his eyes. Reminds me of my mom, sending me to clean up before dinner. Truth is, I still need to do that … plus my hands too. The implication here, Jesus sends the guy to wash up – to wash away the dirt and the smudges that are built up and caked on. Washing is a refreshing activity. It removes dirt, dust and debris. Washing creates freshness. Washing is renewing and reviving. Could it be that Jesus is suggesting something to us?

Eyes connect our hearts outward into the world. They are for seeing. It’s been said that eyes are the windows of our souls. When windows get dirty, it’s harder to see.

If washing one’s face is renewing and reviving, then maybe washing one’s eyes also helps one to see better. Seeing in the midst of a crisis seems beneficial. Could it be that seeing also invites us to rediscover what is most important? Do you remember what we proclaim in the Apostle’s Creed? I believe in God – who is a creating genius. I believe in Jesus - who forgives our mistakes. And I believe in the Spirit - who guides us today, and leads us into tomorrow and the future. Seeing helps orientate both our direction and purpose.Pastor Gene

Total Expenses - $11,789.98 $26,362.45 Plus $320.21

Being in the black is a good thing if only by this small amount. However, included in the total monthly giving is an Annual donation of $4,500.00. Thank you! The net giving in February without this donation would be $8,523.66 which would leave us quite a bit short of the actual expenses. Again, if you are not able to attend worship please consider using the “On-Line” giving option from our web site www.augustanachurch.org. Select the “Secure Contributions” button and follow the instructions. This can be used as a one-time option or set up on a regular giving schedule. We also have the option of “Text to Give” using the secure phone # 844-383-4439. These additional giving options will help keep the work of our church alive and well. We are still looking for members to work on the “Stewardship” committee with Pr. Gene and Dominique. Please contact them if you have some suggestions or can help in this way.

A VOLUNTEER’S PRAYER

I thank the Lord as a volunteer for the chance to serve again this year, To give of myself in some small way to those not blessed as I each day. My thanks for health of mind and soul to aid me ever toward my goal; For eyes to see the good in all, a hand to extend before a fall, For legs to where the need is great, learning to love, forgetting to hate; For ears to hear and hearts to care, when someone’s cross is hard to bear; A smile to show my affection true, with energy a plenty the task to do And all I ask, dear Lord, if I may, is to serve you better day by day.

EASTER Easter is not just a one day happening. We have the Easter Season which is fifty days long. It runs from Easter Sunday to Pentecost (from the Greek word for “fifty”). This seven week period (a week of weeks) was observed early in the church’s history, giving an opportunity to explore the depth of meaning in the resurrection event. Easter is the great validation of Jesus Christ and deserves a full celebration. It is the longest season of the Christian year for this reason. Furthermore, Easter is the model for every Sunday. Worship on the Lord’s Day is always a celebration of the resurrection as the victory of Jesus Christ over death and the deliverance of God’s people from sin’s dominion.
