George Olson George Olson G ’58 was born in a place called Lake City, which despite its name is actually a town

along Minnesota’s Mississippi riverbanks. After going to college in Rock Island, he attended grad

school in Iowa City—interrupted by Army service in Germany—then joined the faculty at the

College of Wooster. His 37 years in Ohio were punctuated by six year-long sabbaticals in Great

Britain. In other words, he’s had occasion to live in quite a few places. But nowhere on Earth is he

more at home than the bluestem prairies of Western Illinois. >

hat’s fi tting, considering it was Olson’s

heart which served as guide on his

path to the prairie. While a student

at Augustana, he met Pat Johnson ’58,

who asked him to a sorority formal.

She was a farm kid from Woodhull,

Ill., whose father—in addition to

raising beans and corn—was very

conscious of the land which was his

livelihood.

Kenneth Johnson became a mentor

to Olson, and introduced him to some

of the last remnants of the prairie that

gave Illinois its nickname. In retire-

ment, George and Pat—married now

for 45 years—make their home in

Woodhull, where they continue to

share the love of the land bequeathed

to them by Kenneth Johnson.

While today George Olson can

speak knowledgably and passionately

about prairie plants—their complexity,

color, structure and symbolism—the

earliest subjects of his artwork were

decidedly less substantial. Most of

Olson’s contemporaries among

Augustana alumni will remember him

as staff cartoonist for The Observer, The Observer, The Observer

where he regularly lampooned every

aspect of campus life. Although he

didn’t study art at Augustana—Olson

says he majored in Choir—by the time

of his graduation, he realized that’s

where he was being called.

After completing his M.F.A. at

Iowa and joining the faculty at

Wooster, he turned to more serious

subject matter—outdoor still-lifes,

mostly, of junkyards and urban sprawl.

But by 1969, he says he began to feel

‘painted-out,’ and turned his attention

to print-making and drawing. Then,

in London during one his leaves from

Wooster, Pat’s mother reminded him

that he’d promised to draw her a fl ow-

er. He ran to Hyde Park and sketched

a rhododendron. It was during their

next visit to Woodhull, when they

helped Pat’s parents with a landscaping

project that included several prairie

plants, that all the pieces of George’s

muse began to fall into place.

“When I started on plant studies,

I worked on virtually anything that

grew. But over time I became more

discriminating,” he says. Inspired in

large part by Aldo Leopold’s seminal

Sand County Almanac, Olson began Sand County Almanac, Olson began Sand County Almanac

to focus almost exclusively on prairie

plants.

“The prairie is such a vast subject.

Remember when you would write a

term paper and suddenly realize just

how vast the subject matter is? The

prairie is something like that. It’s been

written about and studied by many,

many people over the past three cen-

turies, and there’s still more to learn.”

Although Olson describes the

prairie as a many-sided thing, his

approach to its study has been one

plant at a time. “You could spend two

or three years on one plant and still

not run out of subject matter,” he says.

“A plant is so complex. Architecture is

often inspired by plants. And there are

also tie-ins to the human form—we

share trunks and limbs. And the

variety is such that you’re never bored:

think of a weeping willow—the way

it can gesture—then compare that

with milkweed, which is almost

machine-tooled. Even with the same

plant, I’ve found that by turning the

subject just a few degrees I can discov-

er something entirely new.”

Olson’s plant studies have earned

him international acclaim. His work

has been exhibited around the world

and can be found in collections from

Tokyo to New York to London. A

1990 exhibition at the British Museum

included a full-color catalog, the fore-

word for which was written by Dr.

Roald Tweet—then a professor of

English at Augustana and (then as

now) a fellow Minnesota native.

Referring to Thoreau’s vision of a

universal pattern running through all

of nature’s forms, Tweet wrote of one

Olson study: “The curved lines which

shape the crinkled dry leaves and

stalks of a compass plant rescued from

an abandoned cemetery after a

November frost might be at home on

a Greek vase or among the stylized

acanthus leaves of Scandinavian carv-

ings. The more particularized the

compass plant leaf, the more universal

the pattern. Illinois prairie becomes

the world’s stage.”

The depth with which Olson

A plant is so complex.... Even with the same plant, I’ve found that by turning the subject just a few degrees I can discover something entirely new.

invests his art has been a constant thread

stretching all the way back to his days as

a cartoonist. Dr. Dorothy Parkander—

like Tweet, a former holder of

Augustana’s Conrad Bergendoff Chair

in the Humanities—recalls a cartoon

Olson dashed off for her not long after

she’d led the class he was taking in its

encounter with Bernard Shaw’s Saint

Joan. Although comical, Parkander saw

in the cartoon allusion to abiding

themes of human frailty and divine

love.

But not all of Parkander’s memories

of her former student and present friend

are so profound. “I remember he was

late with a fi nal paper once. He tried to

drop it off at my home at midnight, and

knocked on the wrong door. A woman

answered in her nightgown, and appar-

ently he was so fl ustered he thought it

was me and gave her the paper,”

Parkander says.

Such stories can be shared more

often now that George and Pat Olson

have returned to Illinois. After George

retired, the couple moved to Wood-

hull, to a home built by Pat’s parents on

a small lake. Although the family farm

is rented out, some small slices of prai-

rie are preserved there, and now the

Olsons are developing a sedge-meadow

along their patch of lakefront. They’re

even perpetuating the interest of Pat’s

parents for native restoration, to the

benefi t of Augustana students: among

the 420 acres that comprise the Green

Wing Environmental Field Station 70

miles east of campus, you’ll fi nd the

Kenneth and Florence Johnson Tall-

grass Prairie, created by the Olsons as

a memorial.

According to George Olson, it’s one

of the increasingly rare places where

you can bask in natural sounds, free

from the insistent white-noise of our

busy world. It’s also a place where

students—and world-traveling artists—

can go to ponder the patterns of the

universe in the skeleton of a leaf.

Jones ’65 creates second professorshipJones ’65 creates second professorshipAugustana College has something in common with the University of Texas at El Paso. Dr. Larry Jones ’65 has made provision for an endowed professorship at UTEP, similar to one announced at Augustana in 1998. Jones, who’s taught at UTEP for more than 30 years, is now associate dean of its college of science. He oversees a pre-med program which has grown by some 75 percent in the past decade, and works to encourage UTEP alumni to come back to that area after their graduation from medical school.

Funding for the endowed positions is included in Jones’ will, meaning that he’s able to make signifi cant gifts to both institutions without affecting his lifestyle.

One of the distinctive features of Augustana’s planned Larry P. Jones Professorship in the Natural Sciences is that it’s intended to focus on faculty members earlier in their careers than is usually the case with such endowments. “These positions are often reserved for senior faculty members, but the Jones Professorship is designed to help us attract and retain younger professors,” says Al DeSimone, Augustana’s vice president for development.

After graduating from Augustana, Jones pursued graduate study at Iowa State and Oregon State, earning his Ph.D. from the latter in microbiology, with minors in biochem-istry and oceanography.

“I staged a number from the show for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but that’s about it,” says McKinley. “Once the show is ready you have to walk away and let it go. Still, it gives me great joy, watching as a proud parent.”

One of McKinley’s greatest accomplishments with the show may have been the role he played in helping convince its star to take the lead role. Hugh Jackman—best known to American audiences for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men action fi lms—had done stagework in his native Australia earlier in his career. “He’s been doing more fi lm work, and so there were people who were trying to convince him not to do this show. Robert Fox—one of the produc-ers—and I met with him and he agreed to take part in the pre-production workshop. By the time the workshop ended, Jackman was in,” says McKinley.

McKinley says it’s been a delight to work with Jackman, whom he des-cribes as an ‘old-school’ professional. “He was completely open to all of my directorial suggestions, which made him the perfect director’s actor. He was always showing up early, never taking more than an hour for lunch, and always staying late.” That’s the sort of work ethic they appreciate in McKinley’s hometown of Avon, Illinois (pop. 915), which may have had some-thing to do with the fact that he graduated from Augustana in three years.

While in school, McKinley took part in numerous theatre productions both on campus and in Viola, Ill., where then-Augustana theatre director Dennis Hitchcock used the town’s old opera house as home-stage for the Pitchfork Players summer theatre. It was during these years that McKinley began to hone his talents in a variety of areas—he choreographed a production of Li’l Abner, and then found himself performing in the title role at the opening Li’l Abner, and then found himself performing in the title role at the opening Li’l Abnerwhen the lead came down sick.

Although his fi rst job was teaching at a junior high school in Henderson, Nev., his proximity to Las Vegas resulted in a siren-call he soon found irre-sistible. “I auditioned for a show in Las Vegas and got a job there. Not long after, I was asked by a new theatre company that was just forming to come aboard as its education director as well as artistic director.” McKinley’s next stop was New York, where he performed for three seasons at the City Opera.

Performance, however, lacked something McKinley found in directing. “I loved opening and closing nights, but almost nothing in between,” he says. “I don’t know if I have the ego for it. As a director, I love the sense of joy I feel in helping someone else reach for their dreams, and then achieve them.” In that regard, McKinley’s had the chance to help quite a few actors reach for their dreams, including the cadres of performers he works with at Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, where he’s served as director for the last six editions of that world-renowned production. In addition to directing the next two pro-ductions for Kenneth Feld, owner of the circus, McKinley is currently working on a new show which will pay tribute to John Kander and Fred Ebb, composer and lyricist of Cabaret, Chicago, and numerous other Broadway hits.

Duffey joins the ForceKim Duffey ’89 always thought it would be cool to play big-league football. And when she learned about try-outs for the Chicago Force – the city’s fi rst-ever women’s professional football team – she decided to give it the old college try…albeit more than 14 years after college.

“I’d been playing fl ag-football and had been to several tourneys across the country,” Duffey says. “I was 36 when I heard about the try-outs, but I decided that if I didn’t at least try, I’d never forgive myself.” Besides, she notes, the oldest player in the Independent Women’s Football League is 44, so she fi gures she’s got some time before she hits the league’s senior set.

Duffey made the team last year and played right guard on a squad that went 9-1 in the league’s debut season, which for the Force lasted all the way to one game short of the Super Bowl, losing to the eventual league champs. The fi rst game of the 2004 season isn’t until April, but the team’s already busy with practices, which are often held at night to accommodate the availability of training facilities, as well as athletes’ day-jobs. Duffey is a special education teacher at Dundee (Ill.) Middle School, and had been a high school softball coach until she gave that up to focus on football.

“I hope that this will be viewed as pioneering,” Duffey says. “But for me it’s more simply about the attitude of encouraging kids to get out and try it for themselves. At our games we have little girls coming up to ask for autographs, and saying things like, ‘I want to do that, too.’ When I was their age, playing football seemed strange for girls, but now it’s cool to be a tough, strong, hardcore athlete.”

Jeff Paul, right, as George Washington

History AliveThe delegates from Virginia have proposed a plan for federal representa-tion which would be based solely on population. The New Jersey delegation, meanwhile, is pushing more of a one-state/one-vote plan. As a delegate from Maryland, where do you come down on the question?

No, you’re not in Philadelphia in 1787. You’re in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and it’s Monday. This sort of thing happens a lot in the junior high school history class taught by Jeff Paul ’02. On this particular occasion, he’s dressed as George Washington, who presided over the convention which produced our nation’s Constitution. In history, the quandary described at the top of this story resulted in what became known as the Great Compromise; in Paul’s class, it set off a lively discussion of what ‘compromise’ means (one student eventually concluded that it’s what happens when neither side gets all of what they want, but both get enough of what they want).

This is precisely the sort of teaching Dr. Lendol Calder would like to see more of. Calder, associate professor of history at Augustana, was one of Paul’s favorites as a student majoring in history and education. But thanks to a grant awarded to the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency—a consortium of school districts in fi ve Eastern Iowa counties—Paul is still gleaning lessons from Calder.

The federal Teaching American History Grant Program represents a $100-million federal commitment, which Calder calls “the biggest thing to happen to history education since the invention of the tweed sport-coat.” Thanks to the local grant, he’s working with 70 junior and senior high school teachers on ways to improve the effectiveness of their work. As a Fellow at the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Calder is one of a select few college and university professors called together from across the country to explore new thinking in pedagogy. [Calder—who was featured in the Winter 2003 issue of Augustana Magazine—is one of two Carnegie Fellows at the College. For more on the work of Dr. Laura Greene, assistant professor of English, see last summer’s issue.]

Paul is one of several Augustana alumni taking part in the grant program. Jodi Dye ’84 Zimmerman is in her 19th year of teaching at Davenport West High School. “This has been exactly what I needed to rejuvenate me for the second half of my teaching career,” she says. “Going in, I was a bit suspect: would this be the ‘same old-same old?’ But then I met Lendol. When it comes to teaching, he’s clearly been on his own journey of discovery. And instead of beating a dead horse, he got off and chose a new one.”

Zimmerman credits the program with a marked improvement in her students’ essays. And that bodes well for the next phase of Mississippi Bend A.E.A.’s “History Alive” program—last fall it earned a new $800,000 grant to expand the effort to elementary school teachers.

Nikki White (in red dress) lines up for competition

Backstage at Miss AmericaMost alumni have great ‘fi rst-job-outta-college’ stories. But then there’s Nikki White ’03. Just three weeks after graduating from Augustana, White was named Miss Iowa 2003. And although her September trip to Atlantic City didn’t bring her the Miss America crown, it did provide a slough of memorable experiences, such as the opportunity to introduce the nation to the I-O-WAH cheer,

which White used during her contestant introduction on the nationally-televised pageant.

The days leading up to the Sept. 20 event were a whirlwind for White, and included a visit to Washington, D.C., where she helped raise awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network—the pageant’s pri-mary benefi ciary—and for Special Olympics, her own chosen charity. White’s parents, who live just outside of the Quad Cities in Eldridge, Iowa, have been active in Special Olympics since their daughter was a toddler, so it seemed a natural fi t for White to choose support for the international organization as her platform. “Special Olympics is amazing in the way it impacts not just the lives of the athletes, but of the volunteers, as well,” White says.

Since the pageant, White’s been busy making appearances around the state. And her experiences as an Augustana student certainly accompany her. When called upon to sing (her chosen talent at the pageant) she has performed “How Beautiful are the Feet” from Handel’s Messiah, in which she performed as a member of Augustana’s Handel Oratorio Society (and whenever

possible, her 90-year-old grandmother, Dorothy White, provides piano accompaniment).“Before I won the Iowa pageant, I would daydream about how fun it would be to win. It’s differ-

ent, now. I’m trying to focus on being in each moment and enjoying it,” White says. “Since my life right now is not as structured as being at school or in a traditional workplace, I have time to refl ect on who I am and what my passions are. I’m learning a lot about myself.”

Once her year as Miss Iowa is up, White plans to return to school, possibly continuing music studies begun at Augustana combined with either recreational therapy or broadcasting.

Survey says…New data from a survey of recent Augustana graduates offer a wealth of indicators on how the College is doing in pursuing its mission of “offering a challenging education that develops qualities of mind, spirit and body necessary for a rewarding life of leadership and service in a diverse and changing world.”

The Alumni Outcomes Survey checked in with the Class of 1997 fi ve years after its graduation. It shows 72% of respondents were employed full-time, and 12% were enrolled full-time in graduate or professional school. Forty percent had completed work toward at least one graduate degree.

Some of the most interesting fi ndings compared the responses of Augustana alumni with those from graduates of other institutions in the educational outcomes they perceived. For example, on a four-point scale, Augustana alumni gave the school a score of 3.24 when asked if their alma mater had a positive impact on their understanding and appreciation of art, music and literature; nationally, the fi gure was 2.78. the Augustana results also compared favorably when it came to “thinking objectively about beliefs, attitudes and values” (3.35 vs. a national 3.14), and “developing original ideas and/or products” (3.10 vs. a national 2.96).

Alumni were also asked to grade their schools on satisfaction with several facets of their education. Augustana emerged signifi cantly higher than the national average in concern for the individual, overall quality of instruction and preparation for further academic study. Data from the 136 Augustana respondents were crunched by Dr. Tim Schermer, director of the College’s Offi ce of Institutional Research.

Despite the impressive numbers, Schermer says some of his favorite fi ndings came from a ‘freestyle’ portion of the survey. Each institution which participates in the study—coordinated nationally by American College Testing—can customize its questionnaire with additional material. Augustana asked its alumni to refl ect on their college experiences, prompting one respondent to write: “I received a lot of one-on-one attention. Professors really seemed to care.” Another listed among Augustana’s strengths, “My core prerequisite classes, which seemed continually to have life lessons.”

In his summary, Schermer noted the exceptional satisfaction levels reported by the Class of 1997. “At values well above national norms, they rate Augustana’s academic program very highly, would choose Augustana again if given the choice, and would recommend Augustana to a friend. They have done well in pursuing advanced degrees and obtaining employment in a variety of professions. They overwhelmingly agree that Augustana has improved their lives overall.”

In memoriam

Bruce MilliganOne of the reasons Dr. Willie Rucker ’79 looked forward to

attending meetings of the Augustana College Board of Trustees

was the chance to reconnect with Bruce Milligan ’78. “He brought

so many things to the Board—his knowledge

of business, especially—but my fondest experi-

ences were the ‘fi reside’ chats we would share

after the meetings.” Rucker says talk often turned

to student days: they met when Milligan was

pledge-master for the Phi Omega Phi fraternity,

which Rucker joined at a time when few African-

American students took part in the Greek system.

“He treated us all the same and was able to bring

us together, as different as we were. The same

thing was evident at his memorial service, where it was clear that

his life had brought together many diverse people,” Rucker says.

Doug Hultquist ’77 traveled with Rucker, Augustana President

Steven Bahls and several others from the College to Dallas, Tex.,

for a memorial service in September which Hultquist estimates

was attended by 1,000 people. Milligan died August 30, 2003, at

the age of 47. He is survived by his wife, Jan, and two young sons, 47. He is survived by his wife, Jan, and two young sons, 47

Joe and Mike.

Milligan was president and chief executive offi cer of the

Republic Group of Insurance Companies. Colleagues paid tribute

to his gregarious but unpretentious manner, as well as a per-

sonal style which put people at ease and engendered trust. Such

thoughts are echoed by Hultquist—like Rucker, a fellow Trustee

of the College—who described Milligan as “a very sensitive man

with a big voice, a big laugh, and a very big heart.”

Jan Milligan has asked that memorial gifts be directed to the

Bruce R. Milligan Scholarship, which he established in 1992.

Dr. Harry NelsonHe introduced so many thousands of people to the wonder of

the stars that it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that astronomy was

not his primary passion. Dr. Harry Nelson ’35, was a professor of

mathematics at Augustana from 1946 until his retirement in 1988.

He began his teaching career at Cambridge (Ill.) High School,

then later at Luther College (Neb.) and Gustavus Adolphus

College. He earned his Ph.M. degree at Wisconsin in 1940,

followed by his Ph.D. at Iowa one decade later. In June of 1941,

he married Lillian H. Nelson of Princeton, Ill.

“Dr. Nelson had the gift of teaching for understanding,” says

Ruth Anne Erickson ’64 Hartman, professor emerita of math-

ematics at Black Hawk College in Moline and a former student of

Nelson’s. Hartman says Nelson prepared his students to become

teachers – and not only through his classroom methods. “When

I worked for Dr. Nelson grading calculus homework, he never

provided an answer key. Of course, that also improved my ability

to fi nd, indicate and assess mistakes in the student work—another

valuable skill for teaching.”

“I came to Augustana with a love of mathematics and a desire

to teach,” Hartman says. “Dr. Nelson was the one who most infl u-

enced how I would later teach what I loved.”

Among the many highlights of his tenure at Augustana was the

realization of his dream of a planetarium and observatory here.

He served as the director of the College’s John Deere Planetarium

from its opening in 1969 until his retirement, presenting more

than 1,500 free public programs. He also served as tour director

for the Eclipse Chasers Club, leading groups across the Americas

and to Africa, Asia, Australia and the Central Pacifi c to view total

solar eclipses.

In 1972 he organized a seminar on space exploration to

which Neil Armstrong—the fi rst human to walk on the Moon

—accepted Nelson’s invitation to participate. The following year,

Nelson was included in the awards volume of Contemporary

Mathematicians of North America. The Quad Cities Popular

Astronomy Club named its observatory in Port Byron, Ill., in

his honor; and last May, during one of his last appearances on

campus, a sundial was dedicated in his name adjacent to the John

Deere Planetarium.

Dr. Nelson died Dec. 30, 2003, at the age of 90. In addition

to his wife, Lillian, his survivors include children Ronald ’67, Lois ’67, Lois ’67

’69 and Alan ’73. The family has requested that memorials be

directed to the Harry E. and Lillian H. Nelson Fellowship Fund

at Augustana.

OoOoOoOops. On p.p. 26 of the last issue, we included this photo, which we believed was

Dr. Thomas Thomas Tredway walking with students in 1965. Tredway thought so,

too, until the actual subject—a friend and longtime colleague—stepped

forwarward. The young professor in the photo was a member of the

Augustana ugustana faculty from 1959 until his retirement in 1999. If you can

name name him or the students, send an e-mail to [email protected].

AbAbout last time…

SSpecial coverage of Dr. Tredway’s retirement disrupted our regular Final

ShShot schedule, so we weren’t able to tell you that Karen Carney ’87

Guenther had the most complete answer regarding the Homecoming

gurney-race picture. She spotted Nancy Nelson ’87 Schwarz leading

the team with Michelle Aumann ’88 Eisenrich on the first gurney;

Guenther’s on the second gurney, gurney, gurney pushed by Sara Lepisto ’87

Gmitro, Laura Laura Rashke ’89 Rife and Dawn Linnert ’87 Goff. And, for those keep-

ing score, our last issue-ending photo, of Dr. Tredway and Chaplain emeritus Richard

Swanson, appeared appeared in a 1975 Augustana Augustana Au Bulletin.

Then (for ‘Now,’ see p. 6).This photograph was taken by Fritiof Fryxell ’22, founder of Augustana’s geology

department, during a summer fi eld course early in his professorship. Can you identify

the setting? Any of the persons pictured? The year in which it was taken? To get the

ball rolling: many alumni may recall Regina Holmén, who would become Fryxell’s

wife two years after this picture was taken…can you locate her? Send your responses

to <[email protected]>.

About last time:Some two dozen correspondents sent e-mails letting us know that the ‘mystery

professor’ in the last issue was no mystery to them. “Ralph Troll, professor of biology,

and one of the fi nest teachers and individuals I had the pleasure of knowing at

Augustana,” says Ed Holtum ’68. Craig Conner ’95, who had Troll’s History of

Biological Thought, writes, “I enjoyed not only the course matter, but also the enthusiasm.

He is a warm and caring individual who exemplifi es the values and dedication of Augustana.”
