cthurricanes.org Fourth Issue August 7, 2017

!! The Connecticut Hurricanes of 1967 Compiled and written by John Fisher

The year of 1967 was the most successful in our long proud history. Coming off a World Open title in 1964, the Hurcs remained strong and had an excellent season in 65’ by winning six shows, placing 2nd three times, and 3rd once, but finished, however, a disappointing 2nd to the Buccaneers in the first DCA Championship contest by a margin of .14 points. 1966 was much the same; producing nine 1st place finishes, four 2nd and one 3rd placement, but once again, came in 2nd to the Skyliners at the DCA Championships that year by a margin of .13 of a point! ! 1967 would yield very different results, although the year didn’t start out with much enthusiasm or promise. Practice attendance was spotty all winter, and when the Corps began to learn drill, attendance seemed to worsen… to the point where some rehearsals were called off due to our inability to get anything done with so few in attendance. This all changed on a night in March at our practice at the New Haven Armory when Pete Burns, Joe Genero, Ed Condon, Bob Woods, and Ray Luedee read us the riot act. What they said is not fit for print, nor was it intended for public consumption, but they made their point! As a result, the phones rang for a solid week, and oh boy did the Corps ever respond! ! The vets came out in force, as committed as they’d always been, and learned the show. Subsequently, this group of Hurricanes nailed the show and embarked on this magical season by garnering six consecutive victories before eventually placing 2nd to Reading at the Waverly show. The Buccaneers beat us again in Syracuse, but these were the only two defeats endured during this magnificent season! ! When it was over, we had won nine times and placed 2nd but twice, with prestigious victories in such shows as; Mission Drums, the Barnum Festival, the National Dream contest as well as titles of American Legion National Champions and DCA World Champions. ! The 1967 show started with an opening fanfare of “The Man I Love” followed by an off the line medley of “Start off Each Day with a Song,” and “Just One of Those Songs” and a color pre of a medley comprised of; “National Emblem,” “Of Thee I Sing,” and “Under the Double Eagle.” A concert number of “Rhapsody in Blue” and production number of “Fiddler on the Roof” followed. The exit tune was none other than our signature song…”Return of the Magnificent Seven,” with a closer of “Stormy Weather.”…a great show, a great staff, a great corps, and oh yeah!.. 1967?...A GREAT YEAR! !
