his Mom, at some of her grand Mother’s Day events overthe years, or for different things she was involved with, where he would come out, I always same a soft-spoken,gentle man. He always seemed like he was thinking uphis next business move and always conducted himself ina businesslike manner. I really think Steven Turner, IIIwas one of the “good guys”. Some people that I know, who have a famous Mom or Dad, well the kids are justbuck-wild. They act like they are privileged and expect tohave everything just handed to them on a silver platter. Not so with Steven Turner. I actually saw a humble spiritin him.Steven was born January 11, 1950 to Calvin Steven

Turner and Beatrice (Mary Mason) Turner, II. He gradu-ated from Olney High School in 1969 and even at thatearly age was already showing strong signs for his abid-ing love and passion for music. Thus he ultimately be-came a part of the entertainment industry in severaldifferent capacities. At one point in his career, he wasnamed the program Manager for the old 1340AM/WHATback when it was located on Conshohocken Avenue, across the street from where the beautiful Sharon BaptistChurch sits today. During his time as program manager atWHAT, Steven also independently produced andrecorded several artists in the Philadelphia area. In thelate 1980’s, Steve formed his own management company,Diversified Entertainment Corporation, with offices inBala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania and Los Angeles, California.Over the years, Steve booked and managed many artists. Most recently he managed Ray, Goodman and Brown,Russell Thompkins and the New Stylistics. He alsobooked several international artists. For many years,Steven also exclusively booked entertainment at the

Another one is gonetoo soon and that wouldbe Steven Turner, III,the son of radio legendMary Mason. His fullgiven name at birth wasCalvin Steven Turner,III and he passed awayon August 11, 2012.Thing of it is, if youhear the story of whathappened, it sounds likeif he had just stayed atthe hospital, he might

be here today. When I first learned of his passing,I thought to myself, maybe he passed from aheart attack or high blood pressure. Steven Turnerhad gained quite a bit of weight over the last

number of years and I can even remember Mary Masonlovingly teasing her son about going on a diet and exer-cising. In fact, many a day, when Mary Mason would behosting her ever popular “Mornings With Mary” show, she would talk about “putting her body in the hospital”and she would put all her son’s business on the air, fuss-ing at him, while broadcasting her radio talk program, about not taking good care of himself, health wise. Notonly would Mary chastise her own son, publically on theair, she would chastise all Black men, in particular, fornot regularly going to the doctor for health check-ups. Igive Mary Mason all the praise in the world for gettingon the backs of our men, strongly encouraging them to“put their bodies in the shop”. She would always makereference to the fact that so many men take such goodcare of their cars for example, but do not pay attention totheir own health like they do with their cars. Over the years, I think a lot of people would look at

Mary Mason and say, “She has it all”. She has fame. Shehas popularity. She has name recognition. She has highradio ratings. She has money. She owns condos and otherproperty. She takes marvelous trips all over the world. She has important friends in high places. When Marycalled, people would come. So with Mary Mason havingall of that, one might think, Oh goodness, any child ofMary’s must be a spoiled brat.I can’t speak for the kind of person Steven Turner, III

was as a young boy, or as a teenager growing up inPhilly, but I can talk about the Steven Turner, III I hadthe opportunity to spend a little time with, and watchand observe as he would deal with and interact with hisMother. What I saw was a gentleman, a kind man, a manwho did in fact love his mother, and who looked out for, best he could, living between here, (Philadelphia), andthe West Coast. (I’ve also recently learned that he spent alot of time in Florida. For the many times I was in theroom, or in the building when Steven Turner was around

Robin Hood Dell East until it closed for renovations in2008. He interacted with many famous and influentialpeople during his lifetime, yet again, he always main-tained a down to earth personality. In 1983, Steve’s only child, Calvin Steven Turner IV

was born.Steven Turner looked out for his Mom as best he could

over the years, even when working in another part of thecountry took him away from her physically, Mary Masonalways knew that her son loved her and would be therefor her.Three weeks ago, during an accidental fall, Steven

broke his leg. He went to the hospital and the doctors andnurses set his leg and did what they were supposed to doto dress that leg and take care of him. Once they werefinished setting his broken leg, the doctors , (I am told),begged Steven to stay at the hospital overnight for obser-vation. I am told they really begged him to stay. ButSteven chose to voluntarily sign himself out, declaring,“I have business to tend to.” The very next morningSteven was dead from a blood clot in his leg.Not a word (until now), has been written about the

passing of Steven Turner, IV. I wanted to write about himbecause I feel like he deserved some fanfare as he’s madetransition. While I am sharing the story of the passing ofSteven Turner, I still want to and must, respect the pri-vacy of his family and most particularly of his belovedMother, Mary Mason. I am told that calls came in fromall over the country when news, (by word of mouth)started to spread about the death of Stevie. I am told thatAretha Franklin called Mary’s home to offer her condo-lences as did Nancy Wilson, Dorothy Norwood and ahost of other famous entertainers, and certainly the callsare still coming in. Many are just learning of StevenTurner’s death. His home-going service was held atSharon Baptist Church where Bishop, Rev. Dr. Keith

The sounds were smoothing, refreshing, finger pop-ping jumping and the crowd was enchanted and blownaway with the melodies of Mr. Ralph Penn and FriendsMs. Juanita Holiday -- sizzling tones that would havemade The Count and The Duke stand-up and cheer!Ladies and Gentlemen if you was not there you missed adazzling “All That Jazz” performance sponsored by theWest Philadelphia Cultural Alliance Paul Robeson Housein partnership with the Parkside Historic Preservation As-sociation and West Philadelphia Senior Community Cen-ter! It was the “BLAST!”The program included recognition of the Paul Robeson

Freedom Fighter Awards presented by our great Council-woman Jannie Blackwell, the God sent Rev. JoeWilliams, Founder Frances Aulston and Board MemberBill Richardson. Ms. Aulston and the Board recognizedand paid Tribute to the Greatest of the Greats in our com-munity and across the world. We can stand and applaudthe award recipients because of what they do, have doneand will continue to do (even through their legacy) in theworld of public services and in their own right are wor-thy and are blessed in all they do! The awardees were Ms. Ruth Bazemore, Ryan Boyer,

Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. our own R. Sonny Driver,Tyree Johnson, Charles Gibbs, Esq., Sara Lomax-Reese,Vernoca L. Michael and the Doctor of Afro-centric cul-ture, knowledge and understanding the late great Dr. Ed-ward W. Councilwomen Black-well and the Chair of Echoes of Africa, Mr. StanSlaugther put on a remarkable program both Friday nightand Saturday morning bringing to light our real connec-tion to the Mother Land. The Ambassador Reception forthe Ambassador of Cote d’Ivoire, His ExcellenceyDaouda Diabate and the Awards Celebration at thePhiladelphia Zoo was thought provoking and an inspiringmoment for the children. Our nation’sdemocracy is in acrisis. We are fac-ing the biggestchallenge to ournation since itsinception. No,there is not anarmed rebelliongoing on, but, oh,is there a war—a

silent, insidious, invidious, nefarious, absolutely downright ugly war. And thewar is on the right to vote for Americancitizens.

-- Barbara Arnwine, July 2012At the Children's Defense Fund’s re-

cent national conference Barbara Arnwine, theExecutive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for CivilRights Under Law and a leader of Election Protection, the nation's largest nonpartisan voter protection coalition, issued an urgent call to action. Right now assaults onvoting rights across the country in advance of the 2012elections are keeping her very busy.Arwine said 25 million Americans who had voted in

2008 did not vote in the 2010 midterm elections, andwhen new state legislators came into power after thoseelections, their first priority was figuring out how to keepthose 25 million people from returning to the polls. Leg-

islators in 35 states quickly drafted bills making it harderfor people to vote: “everything from photo ID laws, tolaws restricting early voting, to laws making it harder forthird party registration groups to register people to vote,to laws making it harder for people to vote on Sundaysbecause in many states that’s when Latinos and AfricanAmericans voted the heaviest, to laws restricting studentvoting.” Arnwine said the lawmakers behind these billswere counting on the targeted voters not noticing whatwas happening until it was too late. But, she said, “they forgot that we stand on the shoul-

ders of giants who we will never let down . . . we get upin the morning and we say that we cannot negate thelegacy of Fannie Lou Hamer; that we will never forgetthe legacy of Cesar Chavez; that we never will negate thelegacy of Mr. Korematsu; that we never can sit back andlet rights be stolen.” Arnwine then shared her Map ofShame: Voter Suppression Legislation by State, thatshows all of us who are ready to fight back exactly wherethe battlegrounds are.The map’s original title was the Map of Voter Suppres-

sion in the United States, but one day as Arnwine wasstudying an early version she heard her late father’s voicein her head saying what he always did when he sawsomething wrong: “That’s a sin and a shame.” It’s a sinand a shame that in 2012 we are still fighting the samebattles for voting rights that have been going on since thenation was founded and facing some of the same JimCrow-era voter suppression tactics we hoped were deadand buried after the Civil Rights Movement. But as Fred-erick Douglass taught us, “Power concedes nothing with-out a demand. It never did and it never will.” So the firststep for every one of us is to become familiar with theMap of Shame, especially the current and proposed vot-ing laws in our own states. Then we each need a plan. Arnwine and her colleagues

are doing their part by suing states whose proposed lawsviolate the Voting Rights Act. But Arnwine stressed thatevery person can do something to fight in this war on theright to vote, and we each need to decide now how wewill execute our roles. Begin by using traditional net-works and social networks to make sure every single per-son you know is a “V.I.P.”: they have verified their voter

registration status; they have the right identification fortheir state; and they know their precinct. The last is important, Arnwine said, “because the

biggest devilment that goes on in these elections are whatwe call deceptive practices—people are going to getrobocalls, and they’re going to get fliers that claimthey’re from the NAACP and everything, telling peopleto go to the wrong polling place . . . if they're in thewrong polling places, in most states their vote will notcount.” Securing “V.I.P.” status is critical to making surepeople will not be disenfranchised on Election Day.Next, Arnwine said, we need to counter the organized

groups who are already planning to send “poll watchers”to African American, Latino, and student voting places tointimidate and harass voters, and we need to “get [our]friends to become poll workers, official poll workers, be-cause that’s what they’re doing—they’re putting them in-side of the polling places also, so they can challengepeople on the inside and nobody will know what they’redoing. So we need good people sitting next to them, making sure that people have access to the ballot.” Nowis the time to sign up for these roles. We can also volunteer at Election Protection Coalition

Command Centers to help watch out for local problems. Finally, on Election Day every one of us must do thebasic job of helping other people get to the polls—asArnwine says even “if you’re bedridden get up in themorning and call everybody you know: ‘Are you goingto vote today?’”Arnwine summed up this way: “There is a role for

everybody. Don’t forget. If you forget everything that Isaid today, if you remember nothing, just remember thisone thing: that we can only win this fight if you fight.”We cannot stand by and let the right to vote be takenaway again on our watch. Every one of us must decidewhat we can do in the fight to protect voting rights today. There’s no time to waste.

State Rep. Ronald Wa-ters, D-Delaware/Phila.,wants to make sure thatcitizens are clear aboutwho can and who cannotvote as it pertains to prisonincarceration.“There seems to be

Our Future means giving up your future. Every one ofthe groups are specifically for the rich only. WhenRomney and Ryan talk about Medicare needing anoverhaul, they mean the government would give theolder people a sum of money and then the older peoplewould go out and find insurance to buy. Their plan isestimated to cost $6000 more a person. Romney, in-stead of paying 13% income tax would pay 0% withtheir plan because unearned pay would cease to betaxed. Your taxes would increase though. Funding forSocial Security, schools, services such as police andfire would be cut. Every service that benefits ordinarypeople and their childrenwould be cut while taxbreaks for the 1% would in-crease.Superpacs do not have to

identify their donations andmoney comes in by mil-lions, not a dollar at a time. This election method wasborn after the Supreme Court's decision that corpora-tions are people. That decision,of course, benefits theGOP. Republicans were not satisfied with just that. For the last couple of years, states governed by a GOPmajority have passed Voter Registration laws. Theyclaimed the law was to fight voter fraud which actuallydoes not exist. Since the Democrats, unlike the Repub-licans, consist of every kind of American including oldfolks born down South at home. Those seniors neverhad birth certificates and without them, the voter regis-tration cannot be gotten. In order to get that birth cer-tificate, the previously accepted voter has to get back totheir state of origin and somehow obtain their birth cer-tificate. A driver's license or another picture ID with astart and end date are also required. How many oldpoor people own cars or still drive? In addition to allthat, the voter registration once completed, has to be ac-cepted by the state within 48 hours. The law is meantto cut down on minority voting. Somehow, we're backto the poll tax under a different name. These Republicans have no conscience, and no com-

passion, caring only for themselves. If Jesus returnedtoday, he would condemn their kind of Christianity. Our president had to be convinced to run again. It ap-pears the hate coming from the right has convincedhim. Everybody who can vote needs to vote becausethe GOP has big bad plans for all of us.

The television ads againstPresident Obama paid for bysuper pacs are paid for bythe Koch brothers, the casinomogul Adelson, Karl Roveand other rich people whowant even more tax breaksfor themselves and no helpgiven to poor people. It'simportant that folks are notfooled by the rhetoric in theads. They not only lie, whenthere is any truth, it's skewed

or misrepresented. Americans for Prosperitywants the prosperity for them, not you. Restore

P: That had to be... What year did Malcolm getkilled?S: 1965.P: February 1965. The day that Malcolm got killed

we were rehearsing with Jymie Merritt.S: Where were you rehearsing?P: Out West Philly. We used to rehearse at Warren's

house every Tuesday and Sunday.S: Wha was the reaction among the jazz musicians

when you found out Malcolm X was murdered?P: Ah man, we just sat down. It was on a Sunday. We

had just stopped for a break. The news came on. We did-n't play no more that day. We couldn't move. I learned somuch music working with Jymie Merritt. Jymie Merritt'sconcept was so much different---rhythmically, harmoni-cally and melodically. It was altogether different be-cause he had a whole new system---one chord, twochord and a three chord. So you had to learn what a onechord, two chord and three chord consisted of. Theywere the basic chords that we worked with.. This wasvery complex. This was the case in arrangements as wellas in a compositional context.S: How did he convey his concepts in rehearsal?P: First of all, we would rehears for three or four

hours. The first hour we would sit down and talk aboutthe theory behind it, what we wanted to practice andhow we wanted to do it. It was like we were going toschool. You would have your pencil and you'd be writ-ing down the concepts. We discussed how we would ap-proach it and then we would start to use it. Here is whatwould happen. We would read the compositions, thenwe would consider the rhythmic, melodic and harmonicconcept that informed the composition. After we got theconcept we would try to improvise over the composi-tion. It was like another school.S: We are talking about Jazz as a cultural practice in

the 1960's. What was Jymie Merritt doing different har-monically?P: Ok. Inverted 4ths. Perfect 4ths. Augmented 4ths.

That was the whole theory. In the early 1960s we wereopposed to playing from the Third System. He intro-duced the 4th system. The 4th system covered the 3rd

Wayblackmemories: "Odean Pope has always beenone of my favorite voices on the tenor saxophone. Asteenagers in Philadelphia, we were both frequently inthe same musical milieu. Even at that time (Ca 1953) hisname was often mentioned as one of the bright new starson the Philadelphia horizon. His sound, ideas and origi-nality made him a favorite of people like John Coltraneand Lee morgan. In fact, Trane recommended Odean ashis replacement in the Jimmy Smith ensemble when heleft to join Miles Davis. I had the privilege of knowingLee Morgan fairly well. Thus I can attest personally tothe admiration and respect he held for Odean. He oftencommented on Pope's distinctive sound and originality."Saxophonist Archie Shepp provides this useful insightinto the extraordinary, incomparable composer and per-former, Mr. Odean Pope. Far too little scholarly attention has been given to

Odean's extraordinary career. Born represents one in-tense looking inward to see what we wanted and werecapable of creating in the midst of an ever expandingvision of a liberated future for people of African ascent. We must not underestimate what Odean Pope has spenthis whole life pursuing.Speaking self-definitionally, Odean Pope states, "I

like to think of myself as one of the forerunners of theSpirit. Most people say I am on the cutting edge. I don'tplay a lot of traditional standards and most of my musicis original music that was composed and arranged byme."

Sociologist Mark Banks observes: "Playing jazz helpsfulfill desires for artistic expression, creation or commu-nity; it may invoke passionate or pleasurable emotion oroffer the promise of some special, transformative effect.Jazz work, it seems, is usually undertaken not i anticipa-tion of material rewards but for its own intrinsic value ,for its own sake." Our wide ranging conversation withOdean Pope explores dimensions of being a jazz artistand the significance of Jazz music as a cultural practicein the City of Philadelphia during Odean Pope's forma-tive years and beyond. In his work, After Virtue: AStudy in Moral Theory, A MacIntyre explains, "By apractice I am going to mean any coherent and complexform of socially established cooperative human activitythrough which goods internal to that form of activity arerealized in the course of trying to achieve these stan-dards of excellence which are appropriate to and par-tially definitive of that form of activity..."

Muntu Chants In The Bell of A Horn

S=Spady, P=PopeS: What is the genesis of your composition, "Muntu

Chant"P:Muntu sort of derived from me traveling with Max

and different kinds of things. It came from me readingabout African philosophy and music. Those known asthe Muntu came together and danced until they were justexhausted. They had drums and bamboo flutes accompa-nying them. Muntu people would dance all of the impu-rities out of their. Not eating or drinking during thattime. . Hypnotism occurs. the moon had mythic pur-poses.. I was inspired to write something pertaining tothe Muntu. If you listen to that composition this is myphilosophy of the chant. You performed Muntu Chantuntil you exhausted yourself and fell out. James Carteris playing that on my album, "Locked and Loaded." Ahman, he takes it right there! Yeah. Yeah. Yeah! Uh Huh.S: So did you compose "Muntu Chant" in the 80's?P: Let me see, Muntu was on my first CD.S: Were you back in Max Roach's group at that time?P: I worked with Max for one year in 1967. That one

year made me determined that is what I wanted to do. Icame back home. Did a lot of studying and a lot of re-search. And in 1979, he called me back to rejoin hisgroup. I worked with Max Roach that time from 1979until he retired, or until he was ailing in 2002.S: Was it your first time in Europe when you went over

there with Max?P: My trip in 1967 with Max was the first time I was

ever in Europe.S: Were you playing festivals or clubs?P:We did everything. We did the North Sea Festival.

We did Germany. We did London. We didi France. Wedidn't go to Japan but we performed in Holland, Italy...We were out there for about six weeks...

Plays With Jymie MerrittS: Prior to touring with Max Roach in 1967, who were

you playing with?P: I'm trying to think because I worked with Jymie

Merritt before that.S: Was that before or after Merritt played and

recorded with Lee Morgan?

wife and me remained calm the energy was very positive.Sitting on the side waiting for the EMTs looking at the carwas a surreal experience. Someone asked me where mywallet was then they went and retrieved it along with mycell phone and Sonjia’s pocketbook. All the money wasstill there, no credit cards were missing. The Good Samaritans (that’s what the doctor at the hos-

pital called them) gave me a towel and a Tee shirt to helpstop the bleeding, one lady gave me some ice to put on itand I also used the ice to wipe my face. Both the Mary-land State trooper and the EMT asked for my license andother information they put us on a flat board put a neckbrace on us and took us to Bayview Hospital in Baltimore. The hospital staff was fantastic. We had a really upbeat

nurse who the staff said loves his job and he acted like it.Sonjia was fine, no cuts or bruises. They examined metold me the arm needed stitches. After a while they tookme to X-ray to make sure there wasn’t any glass in thewounds then stitched me up. The trooper came to the hos-pital, gave me a traffic citation but told me it was the leastexpensive one: failure to control the vehicle. He told mewhere my car was towed to a place in Parkville Maryland. We had no way to get home from the hospital. I have rela-tives near Baltimore but I didn’t have their number anddon’t remember exactly where they live. My wife hasfamily in the Washington D.C. area but her niece just hada baby so we chose not to call them. The hospital Patient Relations Director called and gave

us a voucher for a cab to take us to the train station so wecould get home. We waited for the cab. It took us to Penn-sylvania Station; we arrived at the station around 6:55. Wewent inside looking for the board to see when the nexttrain was coming in but I didn’t see Philadelphia on theboard, (I should have looked for New York). Next wewent to the ticket window. My Tee shirt and shorts werebloody and we still had our hospital wrist bands on. TheSistah behind the glass looked at me kind of funny, but shesaid the next train was at 7:04. By then it was 7:01. We gotour tickets, made our way to the track and down the stairsin time to board the train. It was a brief ride, stopping inAberdeen Maryland, Wilmington Delaware and Philly.Immediately we got a cab at 30th Street Station to thePATCO Hi Speed line then a cab home once we got inNew Jersey.Looking back it was a miracle. Some might say we were

lucky but I say it was a miracle because my car was subse-quently declared a total loss (smashed roof, totally shat-tered windshield, drivers side front panel, doors andwindows caved in, no other cars were involved (on I-95on a Sunday afternoon!) the car didn’t catch fire or ex-plode, we were not seriously injured and people actually

“Experience and mir-acle are two agentscrafted with differentnames and meanings, yet express the exactsame nature. It takes amiracle to gap experi-ence. It takes experi-ence to close the wallof a miracle.”

- Lionel SuggsIt’s not wise to be

cynical or so focusedon the mundane, scratching and clawingtrying to make it thatwe forget miracles still

happen. Far too many of us are so jaded we don’tthink miracles are real or that they can experience

them in their lives. Me, I know miracles happen. My wifeand I experienced a true miracle a week or so ago. Wewere coming home from a trip to Maryland on I-95 on abright Sunday afternoon and I nodded off. I was tired andhad planned to get off of I-95 and come home via Route40 but I missed the exit when I came out of the Harbortunnel. I traveled further along thinking about what Ishould do and where I could pull off. I was in the left handlane. The next thing I knew I heard my wife scream myname and I saw we were drifting off the road towards asmall road sign. I swerved to avoid hitting the sign andtried to regain control of the car. I wasn’t able to straightenit out and we started heading off the side of the road. Weslid into the medium, down the side of the hill and eventu-ally the car flipped over on its’ roof. We were upside down, shaken up but fully conscious. I

shut the car off, and tried to get out of my seatbelt. Iwasn’t able to get mine or my wife’s seatbelt open. I wastalking to her asking her if she was OK and if she was hurtanywhere, she said no. The next thing I knew a youngbrother was asking me if I was alright and if I was injured.I told him I needed help to get my wife out, that I couldn’tunfasten the seatbelts or get the door open. He reached in-side across my body and unfastened my seatbelt. Hepulled me out of the driver side window. By then severalother people arrived and got my wife out. One was a nurseand I heard someone say they called 9-11. About ten peo-ple stayed with us until the state trooper and EMTs ar-rived. Two ambulances arrived, one on the northboundside and the other came southbound. My left arm was cut and bleeding and they kept Sonjia

immobile. We kept talking to her. Everyone including my

junious r. stanton

Miracles still happen stopped to help and minister to us as opposed to juststanding by watching. The hospital staff was great, theywere very compassionate and professional and we made ithome with no problems. Thus far there have been no newinjuries, we are not gun shy about driving or riding and weare glad to be alive. I went to Parkville to get our bags andother stuff out of the car, when I saw it, I was even moregrateful.Miracles happen every day. When they happen to you,

stop and take/make time to be grateful and appreciative. My experience has made me more thankful and I wonderwhat if most people we meet every day were like the peo-ple who came to our rescue that Sunday, what kind ofworld would this be? The only way for me to find out is tobe like them and see what happens.

“I think it's important4 people to know thatin your pursuit of min-istry don't lose fam-ily,” he admonishes,indicating that min-istry obligations even-tually overshadowedthe relationship.Haddon continues,

“It is possible to workso hard & be so driventhat you lose every-thing!! I pray that inthe future i find thebalance of ministry &family!!” In 2008,during happier times, the then couple shared their secretsto balancing ministry and marriage in an interview withAOL’s Black Voices.Mr. Haddon said:It's like a flow with us and it's no big deal. We've al-

ways known that we would do what we do. When wewere dating before we got married, it's no different thanit is now. We've always had an understanding that weboth would be singing and going across the country andthe world doing what we love to do which is singing andgetting on stage and blessing the people. It's really easyfor us. It's all about scheduling and when it's time to gohome, take your butt home. I can't stay over a couple ofdays and hang out like I would like to with my friends. After I do a concert, I have to go home and see my wifebecause it's all about timing and scheduling. If I wait acouple of days to get home, she'll be gone on the roaddoing her thing. It's all about doing what you say you'regoing to do. When it's time to go home, go home andwhen it's time to leave, leave. It's no strain, no stress andno pressure. We don't have any kids yet so it's really easyfor us.Apparently, it wasn’t that easy. And the truth has now

come pouring out all over Facebook and Twitter. Haddonsays he and Damita have worked hard in ministry and“blessed many while bleeding ourselves! God is with usboth but no longer as a couple!” Jude 1:24 indicates thatGod is able to keep us from stumbling and erring: "Nowto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to pres-ent you faultless before the presence of his glory with ex-ceeding joy." But we must rely on Him and put Him firstin our lives in order for that to happen. No doubt, news of the Haddons' split has sent shock-

waves throughout the Christian community, as Deitrickand Damita Haddon were viewed as one of the few stablecouples within the Gospel industry. Even though theirmarriage has crumbled, Haddon assures everyone,“Damita's doing well! I'm doing fine!”Thanks to the Belle Report for the update! If you

While there has beenmuch talk within the in-dustry about what’s beengoing on betweenDeitrick Haddon andDamita all of the rumorscame to a haul, afterDeitrick made his di-vorce from Damita pub-lic on his Facebook pageon August 14th .After 15 years of mar-

riage, he and his wife,Damita Haddon, have of-ficially divorced. Thoughthe news is just now hit-

ting the public, Haddon says “Our breakup is NOT re-cent! It's been well over a year in the process. We haveboth been have repented & moved on!”His ex-wife has not yet responded to his public disclo-

sure of the split. The former Mrs. Haddon also managedto keep a tight lid on the news of the undoing of her mar-riage during recent radio and magazine interviews.Though many will undoubtedly speculate about what

went wrong, “D Haddy” says don’t expect to get any fur-ther details. “I'm very private about my personal life,” heexplains, saying no one will be able to get him to speakon it again unless God leads him to share the testimony.During his public social networking rant, however,

Haddon did drop some clues about the cause of the split.

The peridot is the stone for the month of AugustPeridot is considered by some to be a tonic for the en-

tire body. It is said to protect the wearer from negativityand to provide stress reduction and relaxation. Pirateswere said to favor peridot because, when set in gold, itwould protect them from the terrors of the night. Thegem known as peridot is born in fire it is found at thebase of volcanoes and is the only gem known to befound in meteors that fall to the earth. Peridot is a gemvariety of the mineral olivine. Popakoleas, Green SandBeach is filled with olivine crystals; a result of Hawaii’svolcanic action. Peridot is said to inspire purificationand encourage growth, intuition healing renewal and re-birth. Very large peridots, each more than 200carats insize, decorate the shrine of the Three Kings at theCologne Cathedral in Germany.

To me they are showing the young folks of the commu-nity a good and sound example of doing for self.I know that their old head Mr. Pete Major is looking

down with that old Pete Major smile. He was a personthat I myself learned a lot from -- especially about char-acter. Pete was always a gentleman. But don’t get ittwisted, he was gentle but never soft. And speaking of the Major family, I would like to give

a shout out to Pete’s sister that passed, Ms. Louis MajorBaxter. May God’s peace be with her and the Major fam-ily. This idea came to them about two years ago after giv-

ing dinners for their seniors every Thanksgiving and tripefor the children in the neighborhood during the summer. For quite some time they have invested in their commu-nity to earn monies to reach goals that would always helpthe kids and families, plus all the seniors in their commu-nity and their adopted school, Fredrick Douglas. Eventu-ally they could do no more than to get a building andstart a store in their community. This clearly shows that ifyou put your mind to it and really care about where youlive, you can be the example and you can put yourselfand the young people in the community to work and sup-port your own community with your own businesses.Plumbers, carpenters, painters, dry cleaners and anythingelse we need can all come from our own communities.Who better to serve the community well but the verypeople that at one time brought harm to themselves. This week’s rap from theMayor of Girard Avenue,Toby Rich will be givingyou the 411 on 21st andNorris Sts. I don’t know ifyou know but at 19th &York Streets, there is a storerun and owned by the Nor-ris Street Community andit’s called the Norris StreetCommunity Store. It is an

idea put in place by the one and only notorious21st and Norris Street Gang. Now to me this isone of the best ideas I have seen a communitycome up with yet. For a community gang to own

and operate a store in the community -- in fact it’s owncommunity, it’s just what the doctor would order becauseit can heal so many wounds placed by the very peoplethat at one timemay have been responsible for taking thecommunity down. What a way to give back. I know I maybe getting a little corny and emotional but to me this iswhat it is all about. When the idea of the Philadelphia As-sociation of former Gang Members and Friends came tomind, these were some of the ideas that were in mind --the community stores, laundromats, newstands, danceschools, recreation for kids, daycare, afterschool pro-grams and other things all owned and operated by itsown community. 21st and Norris has always been a com-munity that stood out and the it is a great example beingset by Mr. Robert Williams; Mr. Jesse (Sugar Bear) Har-ris and James (Bug) Gillard -- three of the store onwers’.

21st and Norris Street God’s work is never done because what else but love andconcern for oneself and love of your fellow woman andman would give your heart and mind such great inspira-tion. This is a lesson for this whole city and state. I know that some of you are stuck on the premise that

once you have done certain things, you can never changeand I know that because of the flack I received after writ-ing about Rober Nuddie Mims but people can and dochange. Furthermore, some people are able to help otherslearn from their mistakes and misgivings.Go and see for yourself and support Norris Street. No

matter where you are in the city because they are an in-spiration to all communities and stop complaining aboutother folks coming in and taking resources from ourcommunity. Let’s provided goods and services in ourcommunities ourselves.I would also like to give my condolences to the Walker

family for officer Moses Walker, Jr. May God’s peaceplease come to them along with the person that did theshooting. With love, honor and respect from your Mayorof Girard Avenue, Toby Rich. Peace.

Singing brings us joy. The activity itself is chal-lenging, therapeutic and enormous fun. Itbrings people closer together in an effortlessand natural way; and restores our faith in hu-

heard. And no two voices are alike. So singing, which iseven more natural than talking, is one way we reveal our-selves to others. If you give space to your individuality, itnaturally becomes music. Singing connects us with oth-ers and reminds us that, as humans, we are attuned toeach other.”“I’ve seen a lot of people find real delight in singing. It

brings happiness. If you can express what’s inside, itgives you a tremendous sense of satisfaction. If you holdyourself back, it makes you unhappy. Some people aretrapped, or they feel like part of them isn’t being ex-pressed. Singing has the potential to allow who you re-ally are to emerge. That’s why singing is, quite literally, healing: It makes you whole. And your voice is naturallyexactly right for you.”Except, of course, if you sing off-key… “That’s really

an overrated phenomenon. You can only sing off-key ifyou compare your voice to someone else’s. I always tryto remove that comparison. No one ever decides bythemselves that they can’t sing. A child sings, dances anddraws without preconception, until an authority figuresteps in to express an opinion. But all that is a naturalpart of who you are. Singing is healingchoir.”Singing, which is even more natural than talking,is one way we reveal ourselves to others. Why Christians Praise And Worship God? ‘Hezekiah

the king and the princes, commanded the Levites to singpraises to God with Psalms of David and of Asaph.Levites sang praises with gladness and bowed their headsand worshipped’ (2 Chronicles 29:30). To worship Godeffectively in song, we need to prepare our hearts and ourminds so we can forget about ourselves and worship theLord. There are various kinds of praise and worship andpraise is different to worship. Praising the Lord is akin tothanking Him but worship is a right attitude. When Leahgave birth to her son Judah, she said, “Now I will praisethe Lord!” The name Judah means ‘Praise’ in ancient He-brew so Leah praised and thanked the Lord by namingher son ‘Praise’ (Genesis 29:35). During Levite praiseand worship, the glory of the Lord, or the presence of theLord in the form of a supernatural cloud (Shekinah) wasso powerful, priests could not stand up to minister to thepeople (1 Kings 8:10 & 11; 2 Chronicles 5:13 & 14). Be-fore we start to praise and worship God, we need to havea correct attitude of praise, thankfulness, gratitude andhumility. It helps to pray before going off to church to‘free’ our minds of life’s pressures before we enter intoworship. Once we are right with the Lord, it is then up tothe worship leader to lead us into the Lord’s presence. Agood worship leader will allow the Holy Spirit to lead theworship, while he does nothing more than lead the musicand singing.Patients whose brains have been damaged by stroke

may be mending when they sing. According to a studyfrom Harvard Medical School these patients by the act ofsinging may also be regaining their ability to speak. Amusic therapy that puts words to simple tunes for strokepatients showed remarkable results after only one ses-sion."Music has been used as a form of therapy for stroke

patients since the discovery that damage to the brain'sspeech centers did not affect the ability to sing."Speech and movement can be damaged easily by a

stroke on the left side of the brain because that is wherethey are centered. But music is processed in much largerareas of the brain. And words in a song seem to helpbridge the gap for the brain to be able to rebuild verbal

ability and speech connections on the right side of thebrain.Studies have shown that music in healthcare settings

can:Reduce blood pressure and heart and respiration ratesDecrease pain perception and levels of fear, stress and

anxietyIncrease feelings of self-worth and overall well-beingIncrease sense of control in situations that may feel de-

personalizing or outside of one’s control *Sing for Hope, Healing, Wellness, Peace and Happe-

ness. Arts healthcare outreach program provides the giftof music, complementing the healing process, and pro-viding entertainment and uplift for patients, families, andcaregivers. Here's to the best interest in your health.

system as well. It's all in there. The 4th System is somuch more complex because the way you improvisedover perfect 4ths, augmented 4ths and Inverted 4ths wasvery, very different. ..S: How did Merrit's system differ from George Rus-

sell's Harmolodic system?P: Again, it's the Fourths. George Russell...I had an

opportunity to play some of his music. In fact, weplayed at the Seaport Museum. My Saxophone Choirand George Russell's Big Band played a concert to-gether... A lot of younger musicians today play from theFourth System. That's what the new thing is... Westarted doing that back in the early sixties.

Merritt and hassan as Jazz TheoristsS: That brings me back to Hassan and his tremendous

impact on Odean Pope and other jazz musicians adecade earlier in the 1950's. How did Hassan effectyour very approach to performing music and how didthis background of training and experience open you upto Jymie Merrit's inventiveness?P: Being with Jymie Merritt and Hassan Ibn Ali was

like going to high school and university. I mean thehighest university in the whole world. I don't think Icould have been blessed to go to any higher school interms of information I got from Jymie Merritt and Has-san. Hassan was so advanced that none of the musicianswould play with him.

Do You Remember The Woodbine Jazz ClubS: What do you mean musicians wouldn't play with

him?P: To give you an idea.

When we would go downto the Woodbine Jazz Clubat 13th and Master it waslike a house. It was a placewith after hours on Satur-day where musicianswould all come and play..Odean Pope describes a

very rich and rigorous cul-tural practice of jazz beingand knowing in a spatiallyand culturally discreteplace known as NorthPhiladelphia. What hap-pened in these Jazz Clubsthat changed the wholehistory of Jazz Music in-ternationally? How didthese groundational cul-tural practices, this formi-dable theorizing by anincredible group of jazzartists shape the modernand postmodern contoursof the music? How didPhiladelphia musicians be-come to be in such highdemands and how did theirinnovations get mislabeledand /or erased from JazzHistory?

Rev. Charles E. Fulleronce announced that hewould be speaking the fol-lowing Sunday on“Heaven.” During thatweek a beautiful letter wasreceived from an old manwho was very ill. The fol-lowing is part of his letter:Next Sunday you are to

talk about Heaven. I aminterested in that land, be-cause I have held a clear

title to a bit of property there for over fifty-fiveyears. I did not buy it. I did not buy it. It was given

to me without money and without price. But the donorpurchased it for me at tremendous sacrifice. I am notholding it for speculation since the title is not transfer-able. It is not a vacant lot. “For more than half a century I have been sending ma-

terials out of which the greatest Architect and Builder ofthe Universe has been building a home for me which willnever need to be remodeled nor repaired because it willsuit me perfectly, individually, and will never grow old. “Termites can never undermine its foundations for they

rest on the Rock of Ages. Fire cannot destroy it. Floodscannot wash it away. No locks nor bolts will ever beplaced upon it’s doors, for no vicious person can everenter that land where my dwelling stands, now almostcompleted and almost ready for me to enter in and abidein peace eternally, without fear of being ejected. “There is a valley of deep shadow between the place

where I live in California and that to which I shall jour-ney in s very short time. I cannot reach my home in thatCity of Gold without passing through this passingthrough this dark valley of shadows. with identical earnings histories aretreated exactly the same. However, there arethings women in particular should knowabout Social Security. Although treatedequally by Social Security, there are trendsand differences in lifestyle that can affectbenefits. For example, women tend to carefor many people: spouses, children, and par-ents. Taking time away from the workplace

ing Radio Diva, and without putting her business in thestreet, I would simply say for all those old die-hard MaryMason fans, who believe in the power of prayer, liftMary Mason up in your prayers today.Steven is survived by his Mother, Mary Mason, his

son, and a number of family members and close friends. His father preceded him in death many years ago.
