“Be In” at FUMC this Fall!Dear Friends,

It almost seems like summer just began, yet here we are already with vacations winding down for many people, with families shopping for “Back to School” supplies for their children, and First United Methodist Church is welcoming everyone back for exciting fall ministries.

BE IN-SPIRED, BE IN-VOLVED, BE IN CHURCH!

Did you know that 7 out of 10 people who don’t presently attend church have never been invited, yet would come if someone took the time to invite them? This is an important statistic that provides a great opportunity for the church to do our part in reaching out to family and friends who presently are not in a church on a faithful basis.

With this challenge, let’s BE IN to kick off the fall season with these exciting events:

1. Back to School Fish Fry – Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 4:00 pm. Bring your family. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family graciously sponsored by the ushers and family life committee. 2. Unity Sunday – Sunday, August 31st, 2014 at 10:45 am. Celebrate with Haven UMC – their new pastor, our former District Superintendent Dr. Chester Jones preaching3. National Back to Church Sunday – Sunday, September 21, 2014 It’s “Back to School” time, so why not get “Back to Church?” Invite your friends & family!4. Afternoon with the Bishop – Sunday, October 19, 2014 at 4:00 pm. Bishop Gary Mueller will be here sharing an exciting message of spiritual revival. Dinner will be served.

Mark your calendars with these dates to come and bring your friends and family. Most of all be prayerful that the Holy Spirit will open hearts to receive the love of God.

If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact the church office at 501-623-6668. We hope you will invite your friends and family to join in on these opportunities to BE IN this fall at FUMC!

Be blessed,

Carolyn Elias & Jean LacefieldInvitational Evangelism Committee

LESLEE JONESChild Development Center Summer Happenings

Ayyyyyoooo!!! That was the island call that was heard a few weeks ago at Camp Jam-A-Lotta! Over 60 campers and 17 Teachers/Counselors were on hand for this exciting week of Christ-centered musical fun and adventure. We sang, played recorders, rang the hand chimes, and even made some cool crafts along the way. This was the 8th Camp Jam-A-Lotta that FUMC has offered, which makes me feel REALLY old. Some of the kids attended the camp each year that they were eligible without missing a year. It’s awesome that we’re able to have such a great opportunity for our kids. I would like to thank the teachers that were in charge of each group. Katherine Combs and Sheree O’Rorke led the recorders, Kelley Lovelady led the choral room, Dr. Ron Hall with help from Anne Lowerre led the hand chimes, and Kristen Lovelady and Kristin Shults led the art room. We also had 11 other counselors that made sure the campers were where they were supposed to be and helped out anyway they could. There is no way we could have a camp like this without the volunteers we have. They worked so hard. THANK YOU!!!! Now, we look forward to Camp Jam-A-Lotta 2015 (#9). Until then, AYYYYYYYOOOOOO!!!

UNDERGROUND S WORSHIP ARTS TO START BACK SEPTEMBER 7th!!!If you’re going into grades 9-12, put this date on your calendar or phone. We will begin Underground Worship Arts Team on September 7th, 5:30pm in the Choir Room. Last year’s team is coming off a fun trip to the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area where we visited 5 uniquely different worship services. We had a chance to be “on the other side” of worship, and we learned A LOT from the trip. This year we have a new group of 9th graders coming up that will want to join Worship Arts Team, along with last year’s group, and anyone else who wants to come. So, if you can circle one of these: I like to Sing, Play an Instrument, Enjoy Skits , Drama, or Reading, Set Design, Technology, or the creative process that happens when a group like this gets together, then you’ll want to be there September 7th!!! This is a unique group of students that design, plan, and execute worship. How it’s done is determined a lot by who’s there. Come check it out September 7th!!!

AUDIO/VISUAL VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED FOR THE CONNEXIONIf you enjoy the “technological” side of life, come by and see me Sunday mornings, or give me a call at 501.623.6668 Ext 107. The ConneXion still needs a few volunteers to assist with our A/V needs during the service. Basic computer knowledge is helpful, other than that, we’ll train you. Give me a shout now, and be a part of this important ministry.

Visits to the center by Emergency First Responders, Camp Jam-A-Lotta, a field trip, and a weekly reading program are just some of the activities CDC children are experiencing this summer. Fire fighters from the Hot Springs Fire Department brought a fire truck to the CDC and allowed preschool and school-age children to climb into the truck and explore its contents. They also discussed with the children the work they do to keep people in the community safe. Later, the school-age children took a walking field trip to the Hot Springs Fire Department to deliver cookies as a “thank you” for the visit by the fire fighters. Two officers from the Hot Springs Police Department’s K-9 Unit and their two dogs, Keena and Raven visited the children. First, the children got to meet Raven who is the newest member of the K-9 Unit. Then Keena demonstrated an article search by finding a quarter in the grass. Even the toddlers and the older infants enjoyed this experience as they watched the dogs from afar. The older infants were brought to the demonstration area in the Bye-Bye Buggy which was purchased last year with the proceeds from the Applebee’s Flapjack Breakfast fund raiser which many members

of FUMC enjoyed. Thanks FUMC! After the visit by the two groups of First Responders, the school-age children came to the center dressed as a First Responder. Guess what? Each of them dressed as a police officer! Seven school-age children attended Camp Jam-A-Lotta and were excited about learning to play musical instruments and to learn new songs. One of the CDC campers was chosen to sing a solo when the group sang during the Connection Service. Again, thanks FUMC for including the CDC children in this fantastic musical experience. Literacy is also a part of the summer activities as preschool and school-age children are participating in a weekly reading program from the Garland County Library. Through weekly drawings, children are awarded prizes. The CDC has openings in all age groups for the new program year which begins on August 18. Contact LesLee Jones, Director, at 318-1377 for registration information.
