FATHER JARETT’S ~ Q & A
Why do Catholics Pray to Saints?
One Catholic practice that many other Christians object to is praying to the saints in heaven, yet both the Bible and writings of the early Christians demonstrate this is acceptable, even encouraged practice. An important note is that our prayers to the saints are always intercessory, as we ask them to present our petitions to God. They cannot answer our requests apart from the power of God, and we never worship the saints.
We find evidence for the saints’ ability to intercede for us in the book of Revelation. The Apostle John reports seeing “…the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders [falling] down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints” (Rev. 5:8). The passage demonstrates that those in heaven present prayers to God. It also reveals that these prayers include those of people on earth since the word “saints” frequently references those who are in the world throughout the Bible, including numerous times in Revelation.
Early Church Fathers emphasized the importance of saints’ prayers as well. Even before the Bible was compiled into a single book, St. Clement of Alexandria wrote that the true Christian, “though he pray alone, he has the choir of the saints standing with him [in prayer]” (Miscellanies 7:12 [A.D. 208].
Saint Augustine taught the reason we pray to saints. “A Christian people celebrates together in religious solemnity the memorials of the martyrs, both to encourage their being imitated and so that it can share in their merits and be aided by their prayers” (Against Faustus the Manichean [A.D. 400]). He stressed the twofold purpose of emulating them and beseeching their assistance.
Even if praying to the saints is acceptable, one may question why we would not pray solely to Christ. First, we definitely should pray directly to Christ, but almost all Christians approve of requesting prayers from others on earth as well. The Bible frequently encourages this practice (Rom. 15:30, 1 Tim. 2:1-2, Col. 4:3). As members of the Communion of Saints, we are still connected to the heavenly saints (Catechism of the Catholic Church par. 946-962), so we can and should ask them for prayers in the same manner.
Let us all strive to follow the examples of holiness provided by the saints and rely on their intercession to assist us during our life here on earth.
In Christ’s Loving Service Your Pastor,

A Family Perspective …by Bud Ozar
