FOCUS ON...

Dating back to the 1800’s, the Show is traditionally held on the last Thursday of August. Many of its original Agricultural roots can still be seen today alongside a wide variety of entertainment suitable for both our town and country visitors. We pride ourselves on being a major livestock show, exhibiting cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and pigs and are delighted to host one of Wale’s largest Open Dog Shows with over 1000 entries every year and a wide range of breeds.

This year visitors will be entertained in the Main Ring by The Adrenaline Tour, an awesome Quad and Motorcycle Stunt show. Jason Smyth – one of the UK’s lead-ing quad bike and motorbike stunt riders – will perform fantastic routines of skill and daring, from motorbike stunts with wheelies and stoppies to quad riding with hair-raising freestyle jumps 30ft in the air. The Grand Parade is also an event not to be missed, showcasing the finest live-stock in Monmouthshire and surround-ing Counties.

The County Matters area will host ‘Discover the Country’, providing an opportunity to engage with rural country skills, suitable for all ages. The Country Matters Ring will provide a day full of

entertainment with displays from Usk Gun Dogs, Black Mountain Falconry and Chris Green, Countryman. Gwent Young Farmers will also be holding the Monmouthshire Sheep Derby and the Fun Dog Show, open to all our visitors, is back by popular demand!

The Monmouthshire Show is a pre-miere “Shop Window” for a “taste, try and buy” experience in a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. With over 350 tradestands from local food and crafts to heavy machinery there is plenty to interest eve-ryone. The Monmouthshire Show has always been known as a great place to start your Christmas Shopping with a plethora of stalls.

All competitors have to place in order of merit and give rea-sons on 4 rings of stock – 4 dairy cows, 4 butchers cattle, 4 butchers lambs and 4 breeding ewes. Competitors are allowed only 10 minutes in each of the stock rings to view and handle the stock and only 2 minutes to state their reasons on each ring of stock to the judge. As well as judging the stock, com-petitors must complete an animal health and husbandry questionnaire.

In the stockman of the year c o m p e t i t i o n , C h a r l o t t e Watkins, a member of Craswall YFC, scored the highest points and was awarded 1st place overall ahead of the 43 other competitors taking part. Charlotte scored particularly high marks in the breeding ewes with 98 points out of 100, and the butchers lambs with 94 out of 100, and gained the second highest score in the questionnaire.

But it was double celebra-tions as Charlotte’s younger sister, Megan, at only 12 years of age, scored the highest points overall in the young stockjudge of the year compe-tition and was awarded 1st place out of the 36 competitors taking part. Megan scored 96 points out of 100 judging the dairy cows and was also top scorer in the butchers lambs and equal top in the question-naire with 90 points out of 100.

Charlotte and Megan are both members of Craswall YFC and come from a well-known farming family. Father, Russell Wa t k i n s , w a s C o u n t y Chairman of the Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs from 1989-1990.

The sisters will now go for-w a r d t o r e p r e s e n t Herefordshire in the national stockman and young stock-judge of the year finals being held at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire on Saturday

15th and Sunday 16th September. The bar is raised for Charlotte in the senior competition as the competi-tion rules demand not only a high standard of stockjudging of 4 rings of 6 animals over the 2 day competition but also the

completion of a written pro-ject on stock management, an interview with a panel of judges, and the ability to answer a set of questions with a veterinary surgeon on ani-mal health, first aid and hus-bandry.

The Cape North Expedition team entered AGCO’s tractor manu-facturing facility at Beauvais in France where the MF 7600 models are built to a rapturous welcome from local people and workers at the plant.

Having already completed the first half of its mission to drive from Val Bormida, Italy to Cape North in Norway, the most northerly point in mainland Europe, the expedition team is near-ing the end of its round trip and is due to arrive back in Italy on 28 July.

Led into the City by police escort and showing no signs of fatigue, drivers and Massey Ferguson customer Gianni Brovida and his team-mate, Leonardo Cavazzi were welcomed in Beauvais by Thierry Lhotte, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Massey Ferguson – Europe, Africa and Middle East, together with the Deputy Mayor of Beauvais in the main square before attend-ing a private function within the City Hall.

They also enjoyed a tour of the factory, where the MF 7624 was built only a few months ago, before setting off on the final leg of the journey back through France to Italy.

“We were thrilled by our reception at Beauvais – from the surprise welcome by the Deputy Mayor to the fantastic factory tour,” says Gianni Brovida. “We hadn’t expected anything like it. We were honoured to be treated like royalty and it was marvel-lous to visit our amazing tractor’s place of birth.”

Sponsored by Massey Ferguson and with support from Trelleborg tyres, Gianni and Leonardo say they been over-whelmed by the generosity and enthusiasm of supporters along the route which will see them pass through a total of 17 coun-tries.

The agricultural school in Chad for which the expedition is raising funds, helps children whose parents have died from AIDS and is controlled by the LAI diocese. Italian nun, Rosanne Cavarero, also from Val Bormida manages the orphanage’s financial department.

Rather than the classic Massey Ferguson red, the MF 7624 model is liveried in striking gold to celebrate the string of top

awards the tractor range has achieved since its launch. “With everything that they have achieved, we will always

remember Gianni and Leonardo as part of the Massey Ferguson family,” says Thierry Lhotte. “We wish them well on their way back home.”

Although one is tempted to simply say wet, wet, wet this is unfair to all the people involved, from organisers down to exhibitors and all the administration staff let alone the visitors who braved the extreme conditions to ‘enjoy’ all the facets of the show.

As usual there was an excellent wide range of equipment on display, some indoors but mostly in the open, right from small farm and garden units right up to what were the biggest tractors, combines and harvesters I have personally seen in the UK. It makes me wonder have we really reached the ‘prairy’ type of farming from the USA. Certainly there is the trend to fewer larger units.

Although machinery is my main interest other displays and competitions were available, not only for the usual array of cat-tle, pigs and sheep of various ages but also ‘exotics’ such as Lamas etc. Food and drink displays were in evidence as well as on sale in special national sections. There were special halls with equipment to keep children entertained. (The dryness of these was a big plus for the parents).

All types of interest were covered, some individually, and some in a specific craft tent where visitors could buy keepsakes and pictures for gifts.

As most of you will probably know this comes on top of a season of very wet events a lot, so bad that they had to be aban-

doned, if this carries on should we perhaps consider moving the ‘show’ season a couple months or so either way. Don’t forget the drought conditions earlier in the year and the fact that August and September are forecast to be dryer. Who knows?

PGRO Pulse Crop BulletinBecky Ward, PGRO principal technical officer, comments on combining pea desiccation, spring bean diseases, pea diseases and aphid.

Combining pea desiccationIf you are considering desiccating com-bining peas with diquat, the correct stage of application is important. Moisture con-tent should be between 40-45% when the crop is turning yellow, bottom pods are parchment-like and the seed is hard.

Middle pods should be pitted and crin-kled, pods becoming parchment-like with rubbery seeds within. Top pods will still be fleshy and green/yellow.

If peas are for human consumption, consult your processor before using any wetter with diquat.

If desiccation takes place too early, when insufficient lignification has taken place, the haulm can collapse, the crop lodges and yield may be affected.

Intervals between desiccation and har-vest will vary depending upon the weather. Following applications of diquat, crops are usually ready for combining 7 to 10 days later. Glyphosate is available pre-harvest to control excessive green weed growth, but work at PGRO has shown it has little desiccant action in peas.

Generally at least 7 days should elapse between application and harvest and average moisture content before applica-

tion should be below 30%. Pre-harvest glyphosate should not be used on seed crops. For further information see PGRO technical update 150 on the website.

Spring bean diseasesSpring beans may be susceptible to choc-olate spot infection whilst pods are still filling. Levels of disease in crops are high and, if the weather remains unsettled, applications should continue until all pods are full. Rust is also a risk during warm weather when night time tempera-tures fall and humidity is high.

Pea diseasesCombining peas may be susceptible to

powdery mildew which can reduce pod weight and yield. The maturity of combin-ing peas can be delayed following infec-tion. Dust at harvest can affect machinery and operators. Products containing cypro-conazole, or sulphur as Thiovit Jet, will prevent the disease developing.

AphidsAphid colonies in peas and beans may cause damage until all pods are com-pletely full. Aphicides should be applied if colonies are present and pods are still filling.

Low DM Grass Hits Cattle Growth RatesGrazing conditions have been dire in many parts of the country because of the unprecedented heavy summer rain-fall, but cattle growth rates are also being compromised because livestock are struggling to ingest enough forage dry matter.

“Grass is the cheapest feed on the farm at around 1p/kg DM, so it’s well worth making the most of it. But this year many grazing pastures are so wet that growing cattle are simply not getting enough nutrition from the forage on offer. And with poaching so widespread too, many enterprises have been struggling to cope with the saturated underfoot conditions,” reports David Thornton from Rumenco.

Many cattle producers will now be thinking about sup-plementary feeding, but concentrates will not be the best option for a number of reasons, he argues.

“Even small amounts of concentrates can cause substitu-tion of what grass DM is available, simply because the rumen bugs needed to ferment either pasture fibre or starch

from concentrates are quite different. The rumen can go out of synchrony and the result is expensive and disappointing performance. And this year, we also have the problem that the ground is far too soft to feed cake on the ground any-way,” David Thornton points out.

Rumenco says feed block enquiries are running at record levels for the time of the year, but this is not surprising.

“A lot of trial work has been done to look at feeding blocks to cattle with grass over the summer grazing period. The benefits are now well documented and include an improved mean liveweight gain of 0.24kg per day over grazing alone.

“The blocks also help suckler producers, in particular, make the most of the available grass and boost weaning weights, as well as offering easy-feed convenience.”

Mr Thornton adds that block consumption closely matches grass availability and this ensures less perfor-mance variation between cattle. And this makes it easier for producers to sell even batches of weaned calves.

Spacious Skyline structureThe Skyline cab is a completely new structure - from its safe and secure steps, through to everything inside from the roof-lining to the floor mat. Constructed

from the latest, highest quality and novel materials, operators benefit from advanced technology that increases con-trol and comfort. Fully automatic air con-ditioning/heating is standard.

A large, curved front windscreen offers superb a view of the key areas and out to the edge of the widest headers. The tinted screen is made from laminated safety glass that incorporates a unique, ‘Trosifol Sound Control’ layer.

Along with other excellent insulation throughout the cab, this allows operators to work in quiet comfort. An air-sus-pended operator seat is standard, com-plemented by a comfortable instructor seat, fitted above a cooler and storage box. The fully adjustable steering column suits all operator shapes and sizes and its narrow dimensions provide a clear view on to the header.

Externally the cab’s clean, sleek lines match the bold new bodywork. New H9 lighting clusters – four at each side of the roof, and three worklights on the platform flood the work area with light. New, heated and electrically adjusted two-part mirrors provide a completely clear view behind and to the sides of the machine.

Comprehensive controlThe new control arm console is mounted to the seat and is fully-adjustable both vertically and horizontally.

Covered in a high quality, soft material the armrest offers top comfort. Falling immediately to hand is the new Powergrip controller, which continues the high qual-ity ‘feel’. The ergonomically sculpted handgrip fits comfortably into the palm of the hand with buttons providing finger and thumb control of the most frequently used functions.

‘Pulsing’ the lever forwards or back, speeds up or slows the combine, while reverse is selected with a press of a button on the back. Four switches just below the lever control operate important, but less used functions, such as thresher and header engage, four wheel-drive and a new electric parking brake. Flexible, ‘mem-

brane’ buttons on the front right hand side of the control arm console operate less used, auxiliary functions such as the rape knife and electric sieves. The soft touch buttons have a raised profile, are easy to use by ‘feel’ and are directly linked to the Techtouch terminal for setting display.

Techtouch terminal takes controlIn clear view at the front of the armrest is the new Techtouch terminal, which is the central combine manager that moni-tors all the operations, as well as provid-ing multiple automatic crop settings.

Operators can choose to make changes on the Techtouch terminal touch screen or via the unique, safety navigator pad which has keys and a rotary input control. These are all clustered around a strong hand grip on the side of the display.

The screen is divided into four parts and operators can choose the elements to be displayed or flick through various ‘screens’. The ‘General Information’ screen is always on display showing engine, ground speed and other information. The ‘Combine’ main menus shows all the settings for each of the main components, such as header height, cylinder speed, concave front and rear opening, fan speed and sieves. Dairy coalition vows to keep up pressure on retailers and processorsMembers of the dairy coalition have vowed to keep up the pressure on retailers and other large buyers of milk who don’t pay dairy farmers a fair price.

The coalition, NFU, NFUS, NFU Cymru, the RABDF, WFU, TFA and FFA congratulated the farmers and the general public for their overwhelming support for the SOS Dairy campaign. But the group has warned that other processors and retail-ers would be put into the spotlight to commit to paying a fair price to farmers; one that at least covers their costs of pro-duction for milk.

Speaking after the meeting today, NFU President Peter Kendall said there had been some great successes so far but the battle for a fair milk price was far from over.

Next steps include: •Putting the meat on the bones for the

heads of terms agreed on the contrac-tual code of best practice between farmers and processors

•Seeing pressure mount on those retail-ers and processors that still aren’t pay-ing farmers a price that reflects the costs of production for their milk

•And checking that the monies prom-ised by the supply chain are – and con-tinue to be – making their way back to farmers

Farming leaders are also looking for some guarantees from retailers that payments for milk are not being balanced against payments for other dairy products such as cheese.

“Firstly, I want to say a huge thank you to farmers and the general public for the

part they have played in supporting this work and for helping the coalition to achieve the impact it has, and in such a short time,” said Mr Kendall.

“This is a unique coalition and the suc-cess we have seen to date in reversing those planned price cuts for August 1 is a sign of real strength and solidarity.

“However, there is still a long way to go and we need to build on the back of the successes from the past few weeks. We will be working hard to complete the con-tractual code of best practice as soon as possible and then we need to ensure those key elements are adopted.

“And rest assured, we will continue to name and shame retailers and other buy-ers of milk that do not pay their dairy farmers a price for milk that meets the cost of production.”

David Handley, from Farmers For Action, which has organised many dem-onstrations outside retailers and proces-sors, said: “Farmers for Action will

continue putting pressure on the big four retailers to demonstrate they are doing all they can to ensure all dairy farmer sup-pliers are receiving a sustainable milk price.

“We will also be putting the spotlight on those retailers, including Iceland, Farmfoods and other food businesses which have refused to meet minimum costs of production for liquid milk.”

The Women’s Institute stated its sup-port to putting pressure on retailers and processors to pay a fair price for milk. Ruth Bond, chair of the NFWI, said: “We are united with the coalition of farming organisations in calling for a fair price to British dairy farmers and we are issuing a challenge to the milk processors to vis-ibly demonstrate how money is passing down the chain so that dairy farmers benefit from the recent price commit-ments of some retailers.

“We will be mobilising our membership to put pressure on retailers and proces-sors to ensure a fair price is paid to, and received by, British dairy farmers. The movement we have seen in recent weeks is very welcome but the problems with the supply chain are a very long way from being solved.”“Farmers for Action will

For the first time, the CR-V will be offered with a choice of both two – and four-wheel drive on the 2.0 i-VTEC model, while improvements to the petrol and 2.2 i-DTEC diesel engines have achieved a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The new CR-V will be in UK showrooms from October 2012 and it will continue to be built at Honda’s production facility in Swindon.

The new model takes on a more assertive and aerodynamic stance with a bolder nose section. The CR-V’s signature verti-cal rear brake lights, which debuted on the original model, remain but introduce a more three-dimensional style. The CR-V’s large wheels and bold wheel arches further emphasise its dynamic presence and capability.

The CR-V has been designed as a global car, but the European model features a number of exterior refinements devel-oped specifically for this market.

Finding the perfect balance between a car and an SUV influenced every element of the development process, including the exterior styling. The length and height of the car have been reduced by 5mm and 30mm respectively compared with the current model, without reducing the inte-rior space.

With the rear seats folded flat, the boot capacity of the CR-V has grown by 148 litres to 1648 litres and with the seats

folded up, the boot capacity is a capacious 589 litres. The load length has been increased by 140mm to 1570mm, while the height of the load lip has been reduced by 25mm to make it easier to load heavy or awkward items. The boot of the CR-V can now accommodate two mountain bikes or four sets of golf clubs.

The addition of a keyless entry system and the power tailgate make it easier for owners to use the boot space and enhanced practicality. Within Honda’s global CR-V line-up, this power tailgate is unique to the European market.

The influence of this thinking can be seen in the fascia design. “There are a number of horizontal layers which help empha-sise the feeling of space,” says Nakagawa. “We call this ‘lean-layered’ design. By arranging the major functions in a series of layers, you create an ergonomically-efficient environment that is very intui-tive.” The major controls have been further grouped according to their function, with a ‘driver interface zone’ behind the steer-ing wheel and an ‘information interface zone’ in the centre of the cabin.

The materials used have been carefully chosen for the European market. Care has also been taken to achieve a significant reduction in the engine and road noise entering the cabin. Sound insulation material has been applied to the floorpan below the passenger compartment, while sound absorption material has been fitted to the rear door, rear wheel arches, door frames, front bulkhead and bonnet. The

doors now also feature a double seal. This high quality ambience is further

enhanced by an impressive range of equipment. In the cabin attention focuses on the 5 inch “intelligent” Multi-Information Display (i-MID), which con-trols the audio, telephone and navigation systems (where fitted). In order to empha-sise the feeling of space inside, the door casings have been sculptured to create a concave shape. This has also allowed the front seat occupants to be moved closer to the sides of the car, making it easier to step in and out. As a consequence, more space has been created between the seats for a centre console that houses two cup holders, storage compartment, an arm-rest and air vents for the rear seats.

The front seats also incorporate a whip-lash mitigation system. Slits in the mate-rial of the seat back, folds in the cushion spring and a rotating mechanism on the spring combine to absorb the occupant’s energy in the event of an accident, allevi-ating the risk of whiplash injuries.

The hip point of the rear passenger seats has been lowered by 38mm com-pared to the current model, resulting in a more comfortable seating position and increased headroom. Moreover, a change in the design of the rear seats has allowed Honda’s engineers to introduce Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seats, which can be folded flat in one swift movement. At the pull of a handle, the CR-V can be trans-formed from a five-seater passenger car into a versatile load-lugger.

mised front bumper and rear spoiler help to manage the air-flow over the body. The result is a reduction in the drag coeffi-cient by 6.5% compared with the current CR-V to the benefit of performance, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Under the bonnet of the CR-V, custom-ers will find either a 2.0-litre i-VTEC pet-rol engine or a 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engine. Both are a development of the engines found in the third generation CR-V but both have been comprehen-sively redesigned with a focus on reduc-ing CO2 emissions. “We have placed a key emphasis on applying new technologies to reduce the friction in the engines and improve their efficiency,” explains Nakagawa. Idle-stop technology has also been introduced on all models fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Improvements in fuel economy and reduction of CO2 emissions in the new CR-V have been achieved without com-promising driving pleasure. The power and torque outputs of the i-DTEC engine

remain at 150PS and 350Nm respectively, but the CO2 emissions fall from 171g/km to 153g/km* (10%) for the manual version, and from 195g/km to 175g/km* for mod-els equipped with the five-speed auto-matic transmission.

The power output of the 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine has risen from 150PS to 155PS*, while the torque has increased by 2Nm to 192Nm*. Despite this increase in perfor-mance, CO2 emissions have fallen from 192g/km to 174g/km* for the manual ver-sion, and from 195g/km to 176g/km* for the automatic.

Customers opting for the 2.0 i-VTEC two-wheel drive will see a further reduc-tion in exhaust emissions to 170g/km*. The introduction of a front-wheel drive CR-V responds to changing market condi-tions. Across Europe, two-wheel drive models now account for 51% of the pet-rol-engined compact-SUV market accord-ing to a survey conducted in 2011.

Also standard are Honda’s acclaimed ECON mode and Eco Assist systems. When the ECON button is pressed the throttle response and air-conditioning are automatically adjusted to minimise fuel consumption. The Eco Assist system uses the car’s dashboard display to advise driv-ers on how their driving style is impacting fuel economy, by changing the colour of the dial edges from white to green when driving more efficiently.

The new CR-V marks the introduction of a two-wheel drive model as well as upgrades to the car’s suspension, steering and four-wheel drive system. Honda’s development team undertook an exten-sive test program on European roads to improve the CR-V’s ride quality without compromising its car-like handling or high-speed stability.

The next generation Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering system (MA-EPS) has been refined to combine easy manoeuvrability with increased feedback and response at higher velocity. This sophisticated new system also works with the standard Advanced Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system to detect instability in slippery road conditions and automatically initiates steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the cor-rect direction.

The MA-EPS system also has key effi-ciency benefits. It’s simple and compact and unlike a conventional hydraulic pump power steering system, it does not draw continuous power from the engine, helping to reduce fuel consumption.

The majority of CR-Vs sold will con-tinue to operate using all-wheel drive and the latest iteration of Honda’s Real Times AWD system. The hydraulically activated “dual-pump” system of the third genera-tion CR-V has been replaced by an elec-tronically activated system that provides a faster response when a loss of traction is detected. It also reduces weight by 17 per cent and minimizes internal friction by 59 per cent. The advancements help to further minimise the negative impact on fuel economy common to virtually all four-wheel-drive systems.

There’s also a range of electronic sys-tems designed to make driving both eas-ier and safer including Hill Start Assist (HSA) which is standard across the range and stops the vehicle rolling backwards during hill starts. Hill Descent Control (HDC) makes its debut on the CR-V and is available on automatic variants, it oper-ates at up to 5 mph and helps the CR-V descend difficult terrain safely and con-sistently.

The new CR-V is also the latest vehicle to employ Honda’s Advanced Driver Assist System, or ADAS for short. ADAS incorporates Honda’s Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), which warns of an impending collision and even applies the brakes to minimise an impact.

CR-V HistoryOriginally launched at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show, the Honda CR-V was one of the first of the modern generation of ‘soft roaders’. It became a benchmark for this fast growing segment with its practical size and excellent utility.

Since last year we have sold further 12.3 metre sets both in standard ring and standard with breaker ring formats. The delivery dates quoted by the factory were met, even though the last set to arrive were held up a couple of days by a transport hitch. (Not sure if it was the weather or the Olympics!)

The build quality of this years machines is still superb. They are very well put together with top quality welding and a paint finish that looks as though it will keep them looking good for years. Last season was a good tester with the hard dry conditions we experienced early on, and I am pleased to report no issues whatsoever in terms of reliability or durability. We did have to replace one broken ring on the first set we supplied, but this, as you all know, can occur to any cast ringed machine if it happens to catch a large stone awkwardly.

Apart from the usual greasing up, the only maintenance likely to be needed is to shim up the gangs as the rings bed in from new and rub away the casting imperfections. Wear after the first year looks as though it is going to be minimal. Shimming up is very simple and does not require dismantling the gangs. Shims

are two piece and simply slip in beside the gang bearings and bolt into place, a very quick and easy job.

Everyone has reported on how well they transport, the hori-zontal folding gives them a low centre of gravity and they pull straight and without bounce along the road. The folding rams are powerful and of a quality that should give many trouble free years.

At 10 tons the 12.3 metre wide set of 24 inch are still the best that I know of and should be top of your list if contemplating the purchase of a new set of Cambridge rolls.

Monster tractor gathering garners cash for cancer charity – and sets new Guinness World Record in the process

The event was the brainchild of Neil Maddison and Helen Rainthorpe, of JJR Farms, based at Welton Cliff, near Lincoln. Tractor driver Mr Maddison has operated Quadtracs for JJR Farms for many years, and Miss Rainthorpe, after forgoing her career in teaching to manage her family’s business upon the premature death from cancer of her father, John, two years ago, decided with Mr Maddison upon a unique way of marking Mr Rainthorpe’s memory and raising funds for research.

Well-known for his forward thinking on using technology to grow crops in a cost-effective yet environmentally-friendly way, Mr Rainthorpe was a keen proponent of the Case IH Quadtrac, well-known for its soil-protecting, fuel-efficient properties as the only pivot-steered, rubber-tracked, high-horsepower tractor available.

Because of her farm’s long-term involvement with Quadtracs and her father’s respect for the design, Miss Rainthorpe decided last year to create a working gathering of the machines, with the aim of raising funds from entrants and visitors to make a significant dona-

tion to Cancer Research UK. A programme of organisation, advertising and charity collection which began six months ago started the process of fundraising and signing up entrants, and this culminated in Saturday’s record gathering.

Fifty Quadtracs from as far afield as Wiltshire and Aberdeenshire were hauled to the site near the family farm, and lined up in an impressive array in front of over 3,000 visitors. At exactly 1.30pm, their drivers, each with their machine coupled to some form of cultivator, fired up their machines and travelled away from the crowds to the opposite end of the field, whereupon they turned, lowered their implements and powered towards their audience for seven minutes and 47 sec-onds in a wall of engine roar, blaring horns and blazing headlights.

That time total ensured a new entry into the Guinness Book of World Records, as adjudicated by a representative from the publisher, and Helen Rainthorpe was presented with a certificate to that effect. Each entrant was given a replica of the certificate, and 1/32 scale model

Quadtracs were awarded by Case IH mar-keting manager Charles Blessley to the drivers of the oldest, highest-houred and furthest-travelled machines. With repre-sentative tractors from the earliest mod-els of the mid 1990s up to the latest Quadtrac 600, the most powerful produc-tion tractor on the market, almost all variants from the Quadtrac’s 16-year his-tory were in the 50-strong field.

“We were delighted to help Helen Rainthorpe with her idea and do what we could to help generate as much money as possible for a very important cause,” said Mr Blessley.

Most importantly, donations from entrants and those visiting to watch the spectacle took the amount raised for Cancer Research UK to more than £20,000.

Case IH Quadtrac owners from across the UK gave up one of the summer’s best harvest days to gather their machines in a single Lincolnshire field on July 28 and help raise more than £20,000 for Cancer Research UK, in the process setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of such tractors simultaneously at work.

A well-built tractor at a competitive priceHarrogate Borough Council is making good use of the powerful Kubota M9540 utility tractor covering some 540 square miles in the spa town itself and neighbouring Ripon and Masham.

Purchased principally to tackle mowing duties with a new Major TR1600 rotary trailed gang mower, the 95hp M9540 was delivered in time for the start of this season.

Transport Manager Alan Smith explains: “The groundsmen have an eight-day mowing round to cover the large areas of grass in parks, playing fields and open spaces, and have to travel 20-25 miles from the depot for some jobs. Along with the weight of the sturdy Major mower, this means that the extra power of the M9540 is a real plus. The Kubota is a very straightforward, well-built tractor that can be driven by any operator if the main driver is off sick or on holiday.”

One feature of the M9540 which has met with particular approval from the operators is the 36x36 speed transmission with hydraulic shuttle, operated via a steering column mounted lever. “As the mower can cut when running in reverse, the driver can use the shuttle to easily back into awkward corners – even though it is a bigger tractor than its predecessor the Kubota is very manoeuvrable. With the more advanced transmission, you

can just shift down half a gear and power on up any steep hills,” he says.

Outside the mowing season, the M9540 is required to be a real workhorse, and has been fitted with Kubota’s dedicated LA1353 front end loader with single lever joystick control. Working in harmony with the tractor’s shuttle, loading materials such as chippings and helping out with tree work will be a breeze. The tractor will also comfortably handle a four tonne trailer.

“The drivers had to carry jerry cans with our previous tractor, but now they can go all day on a single fill-up,” he says.

“GGM did the 50 hour service and now we will take over,” explains Alan. “I particularly like the mechanical centre-direct fuel injection engine, which is much easier to work on than common-rail types. And the access to all the main service points is very good.”

The M9540 was specified on turf tyres for a gentle tread on the swathes of immaculate turf that surround the pretty town centre of Harrogate, and after an enquiry from Alan, was also fitted with LED beacons below the roof line.

From the demonstration to setting up the tractor with the mower the whole purchase process has been totally seamless, Alan points out, and adds that the M9540 also came at a highly competitive price, vital with council budgets squeezed.

“We’re extremely pleased with the M9540 and the service we received from Kubota,” he comments. “We would expect the tractor to be around for a long time – at least ten years – because once they have been replaced for mowing, we keep them for trailer work.”
