W ho told summer it could fly by so quickly? What appeared like a great, restful season in May has turned into a busy, fast paced-

summer. School starts in a month and we’ll be back to our “regular scheduled programming” in no time.

I’m trying to practice what I preach and eke out a few days of vacation at the end of the month. Wish me luck.

I’ve got Faith Formation on my mind as these summer days wind down.

Did you know that Glyndon Lutheran’s Mission is to be a Christ-centered community church that nur-tures the faith of all generations?

Faith is a living and breathing thing, a partner in life that continues to grow along with us, drawing us deeper through our years in new and profound ways.

This past year, Kris and I have attended confer-ences and conspired to bring deeper faith formation to the whole community at GLC.

In the past, Faith Formation has been targeted only to our younger crowd. Sunday School and Con-firmation have been our main focus.

How can we expect our young people to grow into their faith if we are not willing to grow into ours? Faith, of course, is a lifelong companion, meeting us where we are and calling us as we are. We all are called to nurture the faith that has been given to us.

First, some name changes. Confirmation is now part of our Faith Formation life at GL and is known as “Affirmation of Baptism.”. In 7th-9th grade, we will prepare students to affirm their baptism. Affirm-

ing baptism does not mean that it makes baptism more valid, it is simply a desire to stand up and say, “I want to follow Christ, and this is why.” Everyday we are called to affirm our faith, not just for two years in middle school.

Second, we’ll welcome 6th graders into their own special time on Wednesday mornings during Release Time for their own class. Sunday School will still be Sunday School, but we’ll add Wednesday School to the mix for Pre-K through 5th grade. 9th graders will have lunch and conversations each Wednesday. 10th-12th graders are invited for lunch and conversation once a month (or more, as we see what this looks like).

Third, more offerings for the different generations. Starting Wednesdays this fall, I will lead a Bible Study on Sunday’s story at church at 2 p.m. (or another time, if we can find some consensus). If there are people inter-ested in online bible study, I would be happy to post videos and open up a forum on our website. Let’s pick a topic and go for it!

As we come back to church after summer sabbati-cals at the lake, let us welcome one another as Christ has welcomed us. Remember that if someone new is sitting in your pew, kindly say hello and sit somewhere else. You can always come earlier the next week to reclaim “your spot.” If you see someone you do not know, kindly introduce yourself. If you feel you have met be-fore, remind them who you are and ask them to do the same. It’s not rocket-science, but it is important work!

Lastly, for now, let’s listen to Jesus together and find the rest from our busy lives in him.

Joyfully, Jeni

Be the change

T hat is what is written on the shirt that I am wearing. A shirt that I got from the girls that I went with to the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans gave to my for me 5th Anniversary being at Glyndon Lutheran. “Be the change” is a based on the theme song for the gathering called “Make a Difference” by Lutheran singer-songwriter Rachel Kurtz; below are some of the lyrics.

“You gave your life to make a difference. You gave your life to make a change. You welcome all to your table, you’re calling us to do the same. I want my life to make a difference. I want my life to make change. I want my life to do some good here. I want my life to make change. We’re citizens with the saints, we’re the sunshine with the rain, we’re the joy with the pain, we’re the change.”

The theme of the 2012 National Youth Gathering was “Citizens with the Saints” based on Ephesians 2:11-22, I invite you to read it. We learned, discussed, thought about the “dividing walls” in our lives, our communities, our world and how we can work on breaking them down in real ways. One of the quotes that was used at the gathering was from Gandhi “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” We also saw this quote when we were at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN. You can make a difference; you can make a change. Even seemingly small acts make a big difference. My prayer for you is that you realize that you can make a change in the world, for the better, and that you do.

Blessings on the rest of your day,

Kris Johnson
