Audiometry A Test
of Hearing
If you are having your hearing
evaluated, your audiologist or
hearing healthcare professional will
complete audiometry.
This examination tests your ability to hear various
sounds. Volume, pitch, and type of
sound may change throughout the
test.
Normal hearing works by picking up sound waves from the air, pass them by vibration from the outer ear, through the
middle ear, to the inner ear, where sound is
converted into electrical impulses and sent via
the hearing nerve to the brain.
You will be placed in a quiet room or
sound-treated booth to avoid any noise
distractions. Headphones or
insert ear phones (which resemble ear plugs) will be placed
on/in your ear.
You will be asked to indicate that when a sound is heard. You
may be asked to raise your hand,
press a button, or verbally note that
the sound was heard.
Normal hearing responses will fall from 0-25 dB across all pitches when plotted on an audiogram.
Do not be afraid to ask
questions! Audiometry is
not meant to be complicated, but rather to
further understand
your hearing health!
