Office hours: Tue-Fri 8.30am-1.00pm R130 plus delivery T HE Body of Christ, we must always remember, is a glorious and risen body, or, what St Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 calls, a “spiritual, imperishable” body. Catholics are not cannibals despite derogatory comments that they “eat human flesh”. Through the sacrament of the Eucharist, in consuming the consecrated host and wine, we participate in the fullness of Christ’s life which expands beyond his pre-existence with the Father and the Holy Spirit, to include his incarnation (taking on a human body through Mary), his passion and death, his glorious resurrection, and his ascension to the right hand of the Father. In communion Christ is really present to us in his absolute fullness, not just in his 33 earthly years. Situating Corpus Christi within our theme of “Easter Feasts” will help us to see beyond the stulted view that in communion we receive the pre-resurrection human body of Christ. Some readers may remember catechism teachers telling us that if we bite the host it will bleed! Among the post-resurrection allusions to the Eucharist, one incident stands out: the experience of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Recall how Jesus walked with them on the road, explaining the Scriptures to them (what we might call the “Liturgy of the Word” at Mass). Picture him entering their home, with he himself taking the bread, breaking and blessing it and handing it to them (the “Liturgy of the Eucharist”). Isn’t it ironic the way Luke suggests that that their eyes were opened at the same time Jesus disappeared from their sight? The message is quite simple. No longer must they perceive Jesus as the historical Jesus whom they witnessed being crucified; they now must “see” him through the eyes of faith, not sitting there physically in front of them, but experience his very life dwelling within them as their Risen Lord! Jesus promised this during his Eucharistic discourse in John 6:56 – “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I in them.He repeats it in his farewell discourses after the Last Supper: Make your home in me as I make mine in you (John 15:3); Father, may they be one in us as you are in me and I am in you… With me in them and you in me may they be completely one.” (John 17:21-23). Isn’t this incredible! Our communion with Christ through the sacrament of the Eucharist brings us into full communion with the intimacy of life and love within the mystery of the Holy Trinity itself. Let us not forget the role of the Holy Spirit either. At the key moment of the consecration during the Mass the celebrant invokes the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit to sanctify the bread and wine and to turn them into the Body and Blood of Christ. The Holy Spirit is the bond of Love between the Father and the Son, sent to draw us into that Love. O Sacred Banquet in which the fullness of Christ is received, the memory of his Paschal Mystery is renewed; our lives are filled with grace, and the pledge of future glory is given to us. THE Body of Christ, we must always remember, is a glorious and risen body, or, what St Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 calls, a “spiritual,
