FIRST READING: 1 Kings 17:10-16. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 146. RESPONSE: Come, Lord, and save us. 1. It is the Lord who preserves fidelity forever, who does justice to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord who sets prisoners free. 2. It is the Lord who opens the eyes of the blind, the Lord who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord who protects the stranger. 3. The Lord upholds the orphan and the widow, but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign forever, the God of Sion from age to age. SECOND READING: Hebrews 9:24-28. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Alleluia. GOSPEL: Mark 12:38-44. COMMUNION ANTIPHON: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose, near restful waters he leads me. “Universal Man”, an illumination from a 13th- century copy of Hildegard of Bingen’s “Book of Divine Works”, c. 1165. Hildegard of Bingen A S RESIDENTS of our planet Earth we are challenged today to examine our attitude to the environment and the harm we are doing to it. Pope Francis is himself deeply concerned and has made a powerful call to Christians and people of good will in his encyclical on creation. Its title, Laudato Si’ , comes from St Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun with its beautiful words describing all the elements of creation as “brother” or “sister”. In his quest Pope Francis has an ally in Hildegard of Bingen, whom we met in last week’s Catholic Link. Today we want to allow Hildegard to speak for herself. She has left us a valuable body of writing, much of which in her own life-time was not well understood but in our scientific age seems to resonate with current insights. In the following quote there is a beauty and a simplicity which shines through even though it ends with a stark challenge which speaks for itself: Glance at the sun. See the moon and stars. Gaze at the beauty of the green earth. Now think! Clearly Hildegard wants us to be part of the solution, not just people who complain about the environmental crisis. She helps us to think in terms of our connection to creation, not as its overlords. What she says about connectedness in the next quote is something that would only later be proposed by the theory of evolution and subsequent scientific insights: Everything that is in the heavens, on earth, and under the earth is penetrated with connectedness, penetrated with relatedness. As human beings we’re all a part of creation. Hildegard says we don’t need to look far: Humanity, take a good look at yourself! Inside, you’ve got heaven and earth, and all of creation. You’re a world—everything is hidden in you. Hildegard goes on to say that all of nature, of which we are part, is pure gift of God. But that doesn’t mean we sit on our laurels and expect the rest of creation to be at our beck and call. Note how she uses the preposition “with” rather than “for”, implying a kind of partnership in the ongoing task of renewing creation: We are to work with it. For without it we cannot survive. The final quotes from Hildegard are in the form of prayers composed by her. Let’s make them our own as we re-commit ourselves this very day to work with creation in its healing and full flourishing. To Jesus, Word made Flesh You, all-accomplishing Word of the Father are the light of primordial daybreak over the spheres. You foresaw all your works as you willed them, your foreknowledge hidden in the heart of your power, your power like a wheel around the world whose circling never began and never slides to an end. To the Holy Spirit Holy Spirit, the life that gives life. You are the breath of all creatures. You are the ointment that heals our wounds. You are the fire that warms our hearts. Hildegard of BingenAS RESIDENTS of our planet Earth we are

doing to it. Pope Francis is himself deeply concerned and has made a powerful call to Christians and people of good will in his encyclical on creation. Its title, Laudato Si’, comes from St Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun with its beautiful words describing all the elements of creation as “brother” or “sister”.

PRAYER FOR OUR DEPARTED LOVED ONES

God our Father,

Your power brings us to birth, Your providence guides our lives,

and by Your command we return to dust.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, their lives change but do not end.

I pray in hope for my family, relatives and friends,

and for all the dead known to You alone.

In company with Christ, Who died and now lives,

may they rejoice in Your kingdom, where all our tears are wiped away. Unite us together again in one family, to sing Your praise forever and ever.

Amen.
