INTERCESSORY PRAYER By: Fr. O'Dell
The word “intercessory" is a big word. Because it is a word that we don't use
much in every day language, sometimes we aren't really sure what it means. The word
"intercessory" comes from the word intercede which means to intervene on behalf of
another person. It means to mediate, arbitrate, conciliate, moderate or plead for the
welfare of that person. So, any action that is intercessory is designed to beg for a benefit
for someone other than yourself. If I write an intercessory letter to a court about a
person's up coming sentencing hearing, I am usually writing to ask that the court be
lenient with that person. If I intercede for someone who is trying to get into college, I
am recommending to the admission office that this person be accepted to the programs
of the university in question. Intercessory action means going to bat for another person.
It means asking a higher authority to do something for that person that I can't do for
them.
There is a kind of prayer that we say that is intercessory as well. Intercessory
prayer means that we petition the Lord in Heaven to grant someone a particular boon
or blessing. If I am looking for a job and having difficulty finding one, I may ask for
someone to pray for me that I find employment quickly. If you are sick with cancer, you
might ask someone to pray for your healing. In a particular way, when someone close to
us dies, we may ask other people to pray for "the repose of his or her soul" - that he or
she be brought home to the Lord in Heaven quickly. We ask for people to intercede for
us in prayer frequently.
So, how does intercessory prayer work? First, prayer is powerful because we
know that God listens to our prayer. I am fully confident that if I ask God to heal
someone who is sick that He hears my prayer and answers it. The healing that He may
give the person is not always a physical healing - but some kind of healing will occur.
Maybe that healing is emotional well being, or maybe it is the grace of acceptance and
serenity, maybe it's the blessing of peace of mind, but some kind of healing always
takes place. God hears and answers my prayer.
Second, when we ask God to do something for someone in intercessory prayer,
that does not mean that God always answers our prayers in exactly the way or the time
frame that we would like. He answers the prayer in the way that best benefits the person
for whom the prayer is being offered. Demanding that it be answered in the way that we
think is best is trying to act in God's stead.
Third, the benefits of intercessory prayer don't have to be earned or merited,
they are free gifts given us by Almighty God. In other words when I pray for the well
being of another person I don't have to worry whether the person is "worthy" or
"deserving" of God's blessing because God is all merciful and all loving toward each
of us. I don't have to worry whether the person is Catholic or even Christian because we
are all God's children. I don't have to agree with the thing being prayed for or not, I just
need to trust that God knows what is worthy and how to best grant the request.
Fourth, there are no rules about how "to do" intercessory prayer. You can do
it any where and any time. You can do it on your daily walk or in your easy chair. You
can do it at home or at work. You can do in the morning, noon or night. It goes well
together with the Mass and other prayers, but it can stand alone as well. There is no
right or wrong formula to doing it - you just present your request for the other person
before the Lord and then you go about your business.
Fifth, intercessory prayer is particularly important for the souls in Purgatory.
Purgatory is a place of purification for humans who have died, before they enter
Heaven. The intercessory prayers help by shortening the time that the person is in
Purgatory before being brought to God's altar on high. Of particular importance are the
intercessory prayers that are combined with the Mass for the good of the person in
question.
Intercessory prayer is a powerful experience for the person offering it, as well
as of great benefit to the person for whom it is offered. Take time during the month of
November to pray for the faithful departed. Take time everyday to pray for the well
being of those around you.
Congratulations Rachel & Carter Gronseth
