Dear Parents and Guardians, It’s hard to believe that it’s May! These last months of the school year are always busy times both at school and at home. Please take a close look at the calendar in this newsletter. It contains important dates for many wonderful arenas in which children showcase their talents. A fo-cus for continuous improvement begins in the development of skill and knowledge for all of us. Teachers continue to increase their repertoire of skills to prepare, deliver and assess lessons according to district out-comes and what students need to meet and exceed standard. John F. Kennedy, Jr. stat-ed, “Things do not happen. Things are made to happen.” To begin, I would like to share some background information on what the research says about ensuring the success of students’ literacy development. Five areas are:

Phonemic Awareness – the ability to no-tice, think about and work with individual sounds in spoken words. Children need to be aware of how sounds work and under-stand that words are made up of speech sounds, or phonemes before they can learn to read print.

Phonics – Teaches children the relationship between the letters (graphemes) of written language and the individual sounds phonemes) of the spoken language. Fluency – The ability to read text accurately and quickly. When fluent readers read silent-ly, they recognize words automatically and they read aloud effortlessly with expression.

Vocabulary – Much of the vocabulary that is internalized is learned indirectly. However, some vocabulary should be taught directly. Procedure For Reporting An Absence / Tardy

Absences from school for any reason should be reported by phone on the day of absence and each successive day the child is out of school. Please call the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 before 9 a.m. to report your child absent. Please leave your child’s name, his/her teacher’s name and the reason they are not attending. Please keep your child home from school until they have been fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. When your child returns to school a written note is required by law. If your child will be late for school for any reason, please also notify the Health & Attendance Office at 336-3030 prior to 9 a.m. When your child arrives at school, a written note is required. This procedure is used to make sure we know where your child is at all times. Calling the Attendance Line prior to 9 a.m. will help eliminate calls to parents. Also, we are required to have a written excuse on file for all student absences, tardiness or early dismissals as part of their permanent record.

GRADE 6 ROCKET LAUNCH

SAVE THE DATE

The Gr. 6 Rocket Launch is scheduled for June 6th with a rain date of June 14th

Outdoor Education Grade 6

By Mrs. Vay & Mr. Brickler

All parents/guardians should have received a letter regarding the upcoming Outdoor Education field trip on June 8 and 9. These forms should have been returned to your child’s Core teacher along with payment. If you have volunteered to help, we will contact you during May. Our parent volunteer meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 6th at 7 p.m. in the Rogers cafeteria. Students will receive more information about Outdoor Ed in the next several weeks. We are looking forward to sharing this experience with your child.

Physical Education Update In May, students will be starting the month off by participating in an “Ultimate” Games unit. We will be working on throwing and catching skills with a frisbee and a football. We will also be checking for overall growth through Fitness Gram testing. We will be finishing up the month with field hockey, hopefully outside, enjoying the beautiful sunny weather!

Builders’ Club The Builder's Club held a school supplies drive in March to benefit the Bohemia All-Age School in St. Ann, Jamaica. Students and staff donated close to 500 items for the school! The organization arranging the delivery of the supplies is very excited about the donations and proud of the students at Rogers for caring about others around the world. The supplies will be delivered over spring break.

Start saving your loose coins now! In May we will be holding a penny drive. The money we collect will be donated to

Bohemia All Age School in St. Ann, Jamaica.
