• Saigo Takamori is a Japanese legend and the man that the movie “The Last Samurai” is based on.

• He helped overthrow the Han Dynasty.

• His involvement in the

government helped bring

order to Japan.

Early Years

• Saigo was born in Edo(now Tokyo), Japan.

• His dad was a low leveled Samurai in the system, so Saigo was trained form a young age to become a Samurai.

• Saigo faced some trouble with the government and was banished and tried to commit suicide, but eventually came back.

Character

• Saigo was a loyal and honorable Samurai.

• He was respected by his countrymen and is a hero to the Japanese now.

• He was begged not to retire from his role in government, because of the chaos which would befall on Japan if he was not there to lead the country.

His Legendary Death

• There was much mystery surrounding Saigo’sdeath.

• He died leading a rebellion against the emperor, but his head was never found.

• Many stories were formed about

how Saigo was still alive, causing

him to become a Japanese hero

and legend.
