BASCO WOODCARVERS

One of the most active, dedicated BASCO groups is the Woodcarvers. They meet every Wednesday from 1:00-3:00. The group is made up of novices as well as experienced wood carvers. Newsletter team editor Marlen Buchanan conducted recent interviews with some of the carvers and their interesting woodcarving stories are presented below. Laurie Dummer joined the group in January 2020 and is well on her way to creating unique wood sculptures. Nothing like taking up a new hobby at age 64! You may have seen her Kachina doll recently in the BASCO display cabinet. Laurie said she learned all her wood carving skills by observing other BASCO carvers and experimenting, with tools she had acquired in college. In the past, Laurie has done painting, block and linoleum printing, paper mâché, jewelry making, sculpting, and weaving. Her favorite carving themes come from having lived in New Mexico and from extensive traveling in the West as a child with her family. Laurie recently participated in the 2020 Van Orden Mansion/Sauk County Historical Society “Edwardian Christmas” fundraising event, in which she decorated one of the rooms with a southwest Native American culture theme. Two of her Christmas tree decorations were Kokopellis spirit dolls (flute players) that she carved. Laurie also teaches Book Art sessions at the Baraboo Library. This involves repurposing old books in unique, artistic ways. Sister Francine Kosednar, Sister of the Divine Savior, began her creative journey in 8th grade, when her mother gave her an oil painting set. She also started carving statues in her high school art class. Sister Francine has been a BASCO woodcarver since 2009. In the 1960s, a bird display at a Wausau hospital piqued her interest. Sister Francine’s artistic talents are also evident in her ceramic and stained-glass work. She finds carving themes in nature, via prayer, and from other people. She is especially enthusiastic when discussing her welding artwork, which she describes as “destroying to create”. She makes flowers out of hardwood and from metal, such as hardwood flooring nails. Bill Mautz did chainsaw carving many years ago. He began his woodcarving career after he retired at age 70. He’s been with the BASCO woodcarvers for four years. Carving was a hobby he could do on his own. He began carving small statues like birds and dogs. Looking through carving magazines provided him with other carving ideas. He especially enjoys carving “humorous” characters. Bill also enjoys his “horse hobby”, which includes attending any fair offering pleasure horse events. Bill and his fellow carvers have indicated that the BASCO Woodcarving group has room for new participants. The group is happy to offer advice and sup-port for carving newbies! (Continued on page 9)

BOOK REVIEW FOR NOVEMBER’S SELECTION: THE MARRIAGE PACT BY MICHELLE RICHMOND Newlyweds Jake and Alice were determined to do whatever they could to have a successful marriage. An acquaintance suggested their names to the Marriage Pact organization. They were approved and representatives came to their home to describe the benefits of the group. It seemed the perfect answer for their marriage. The meeting was rushed, the contract was signed, and the huge manual of do’s and don’ts was left for them to read.

As time goes by, their life gets interesting. Very much so. The author came up with ingenious scenarios which were covered in the lengthy manual, many of which had severe and creative consequences.

Some of our book club readers liked the book; a few had firm “thumbs down” votes; I believe I was the only one who actually loved the book. I was delighted to find a book like this that is definitely different, and I found it to be quite fun to read. This book is in the “fiction” section for a reason.
