From the Desk of Father Steve: Seeing God in Everyday Life: Clouds and Fidelity
“The Lord says, ‘What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew
that goes early away.’” -Hosea 6:4
Thanks to my Swedish heritage, I have a skin complexion that sunburns easily, and also causes me to have a relatively low tolerance for heat (which is one of the reasons why I prefer winter to summer!). From time to time, my intolerance for high heat during the summer months interferes with my desire to go fishing. I have found that this is especially the case when fishing on Lake Superior in the summer. As someone once told me, there is no hotter place on earth than sitting in a boat on Lake Superior on a hot day with no breeze- the reflection of the water only serves to increase the
intensity of the sun’s effect. There have been many days of summer fishing where I have had to call it quits earlier than I would have liked because I was beginning to feel sick due to the intense sunshine and the heat. On those hot days on the lake, I have often noticed that clouds are some of the most fickle creatures that God has created. When you are on the verge of overheating, seeing patchy clouds form on the western horizon gives you great hope: if those clouds could just get here quickly and give me a break from the sunshine, I’d be able to last out here on the lake longer! But I have noticed that even though it may seem that cloud cover is on the way, it is actually hit or miss as to whether those clouds will make it to where the sun is in the sky. They often dissipate just as quickly as they appear. I have come to realize that I cannot place my hope in clouds on the horizon- they are too fickle, too unreliable to depend on for relief from the sun. The Lord God uses this image of the fickleness of clouds to describe the fickleness of the devotion of His people in this scripture verse from the Old Testament book of Hosea that I quoted above. He compares the love and devotion that His people claim to have for Him as similar to a morning cloud that dissipates quickly. In this verse, God is expressing His frustration and lament over the “on-again off-again” love of his people. Sometimes they are devoted to their faith and practice it with great zeal, but it seems to always last for only a time: their loyalty, their fidelity cannot be counted upon. Like a morning cloud- there is no telling if it will be here an hour from now or not. We see this fickleness on obvious display in today’s celebration of Palm Sunday. The same people whom we hear at the beginning of Mass in the Gospel celebrating Jesus as the Messiah and King of Israel with shouts of “Hosanna” will later in the Mass be shouting, “crucify Him!” It’s the story of humanity under the reign of sin. And we are all guilty of it. Each of us suffer from fickleness in our devotion and love for God. We proclaim our faith and love for God at one moment, and we sin and disobey God in the next. So what are we to do? Well, I’d like to suggest something: first, we need to recognize that we will not be able to love God perfectly in this lifetime. We will always fall into sin- that’s why God gave us the sacrament of confession- so that we can return to Him and be forgiven. But secondly, perhaps this Holy Week, we can make a pledge to increase devotion for God, as a way to sort of “make-up” for all the times that we have been fickle in our devotion to Him. This Holy Week, if our work and family schedules allow, let’s pledge to attend Holy Mass and services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil. The times for these beautiful celebrations are listed on the individual parish page. Yes, it is a time commitment, but it will be worth it! And it is one small way that we can increase our devotion to God- by walking with Him through His suffering, death and resurrection. God bless you and know of my prayers for you during this holiest week of the year!
~Fr. Steve

From the Desk of Father Steve: As your Pastor, I just wanted to let each and every parishioner know how very inspired and grateful I have been to witness your incredible generosity. As we know, about six months ago, while St. Mary’s was in the midst of its front-wall project, parishioners from Holy Spirit took up a second collection and raised about $4,000.00 for their brothers and sisters up North as a beautiful sign of solidarity and support. A few weeks ago, parishioners at St. Mary’s asked to take up a second collection in order to show their solidarity and support of Holy Spirit parish as it works through its building project, and they raised $3,300.00. As Pastor of both parishes, I can’t express sufficiently in words just how much this pleases my heart, and how proud it makes me of all of you! Your generosity to each other in times of need is truly inspiring to me. Thank you, my brothers and sisters, Catholics on the North Shore, for providing such a tremendous witness of fraternal charity and concern. I truly consider myself exceedingly blessed to be assigned here as your Pastor. God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

Cassi’s Corner—Tips for Holy Week
Holy week is the most sacred time of the Church
year—more so than Christmas! This week we experi-
ence, through the mystery of God being outside of
time, being present at the Lord’s Supper, witnessing
His crucifixion, keeping watch for the Resurrection,
and celebrating His resurrection. Being present
during these three days, known as the Triduum, is
not an obligation, but it is an amazing privilege! If
you have not attended before, I strongly encourage
you to do so. Don’t worry about the kids being
squirmy, tired, and distracting—just embrace it and
be present.
Here are some reminders/new information to help
you know what to do/not do at these once a year
services (if you make a mistake, it’s fine).
On Holy Thursday, the only real difference is that
you don’t genuflect when leaving because Christ
is not in the tabernacle. Simply bow to the altar.
You would genuflect at the Altar of Repose.
On Good Friday, we bow to the altar, not genuflect,
when arriving for the Liturgy of the Lord's
Passion. During the reverencing of the cross, you
can touch or kiss the cross while standing or
genuflecting. When leaving at the conclusion of
the service, and when coming and going after the
service has taken place, we genuflect before the
holy cross that remains in the sanctuary.
On Holy Saturday, Mass begins outside at a fire!
You will process in when prompted and bow to
the altar. You will genuflect when leaving. There
will also be one or two times you light your
candle during Mass. If not instructed to blow it
out, do so before being seated.
