1.2 Introduction to the Module Develop a detailed understanding and explore examples of the current contexts and practices of

human resource management. (HRM) workforce management, people management, intellectual capital management, in contemporary cultures and within case study models drawn from a number of societal and economic models.

Provide a context for understanding the change environment in which human resources management and workforce management has developed in contemporary environments and in differing cultures.

Outline current best practices in the field of HRM, workforce management, people management and intellectual capital management particularly in managing a workforce and within organisational change contexts.

Provide an understanding of the concepts, methods and techniques and issues involved in managing people and human resources so as to facilitate employing, maintaining and promoting a motivated workforce in an organisation as well as managing for change.

Develop an understanding of the role of the manager and how their general management skills relate to the effective and efficient management of a workforce in a variety of contemporary cultural situations.

Develop from the manager’s perspective an understanding of the critical operational and strategic perspectives which need to be considered in managing a workforce.

Evaluate how current workforce management approaches might be applied in developing positions of competitive advantage and what strategies might be employed to achieve these objectives

1.3 Learning OutcomesThis module, like all modules at Anglia Ruskin, is taught on the basis of achieving intended learning outcomes. On successful completion of the module, the student will be expected to be able to demonstrate the following:

4.2 The Assignment 4.2.1Element 010 – Assignment TaskAs a Human Resource Management Consultant, you have been invited by a company of your choice to advise them on the possibility of restructuring their HR practices in order to compete more effectively in the global marketplace. In particular the Board of Directors would like you to address the following:

Task 1

Explain the importance of effective HR strategies in terms of creating competitive advantage and for companies operating in the global marketplace, in the context of your chosen company.

Identify the strategic HR issues relevant to the overall performance of the chosen organisation

Task 2

Drawing on HR models, critically examine the importance and relevance of HRM in a changing environment by analysing the business performance of the firm, its historical development and current market contexts, together with a profile of the company’s human capital.

Task 3

Critically examine how recruitment and selection AND training and development can help the company increase employee performance. By way of recommendations, devise training strategies for the firm.

General guidelines:

1. Your analysis must be grounded in appropriate academic literature and must provide clear evidence of independent critical evaluation.

2. All arguments must be justified with evidence gained from reading.3. All research must be referenced and a bibliography attached. 4. The application of theory to practice will be given good marks.
