ARPIL 2016 Brandenburg United Methodist Church Steeple Bell As I write these words, I am preparing to catch a flight to the desert southwest, where I hope to spend two weeks in spiritual re- flection. I undertook a similar trip back in August of 2004, staying in vari- ous monasteries, retreat centers, and hermitage cabins throughout New Mexico and Arizona; my itinerary 12 years later is much the same. The past 18 months have been somewhat eventful (read: stressful), and I know myself well enough at this point to understand that what I need is time and space set aside for solitude, silence, and prayer. The desert has long been seen as a place of spiritual retreat. In Mark 1, Jesus went away by Himself to a lonely, barren place in order to pray. In Matthew 4, He went for prayer and fasting before facing the temptations of the Enemy. Beginning in the third century, as- cetic monks pulled away from society and went out into the Egyptian desert in order to better hear God and live out their lives of devotion to Christ. Generally speaking, the desert is an ex- treme environment, capable of blistering heat and frigid cold. Going into the desert is a way of stripping away life’s props and systems of support. When we’re alone and quiet and praying, we of necessity must deal with our inner demons, those things which work to keep us from devotion to Christ. Certainly one doesn’t have to retreat to the barren desert in order to find silence, solitude, and prayer. But there are seasons in our lives which suggest the need for a deliberate, intentional time of concentrated prayer. I’m so grateful to have sensed such a need in my life, and to have a church fam- ily which encourages me to act upon it. I look forward to seeing each of you upon my return. – Bro. Jim PRAYER VIGIL Begins at 6 p.m. Friday, April 22 Concludes at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 23 Please see page 7 for more information.
