The 2015 Men’s Army Hockey Tour of Chile is not only a fantastic opportunity for all those involved and associated with it, but an example of what the Army is always striving to achieve.

It is taking soldiers who are already busy with operations, training and career progression and offering them new challenges and experiences that will allow them the chance to develop as individuals and sportsmen, but also as ambassadors

for their country. They will spread the influence of the British Army into one of the farthest flung corners of the globe while, I have no doubt, making many friends on the way and playing good hockey.

I wish them all the very best and thank all those involved for putting in the hard work that has made this tour possible. Colonel Dickie Head MC (late The Rifles) Chairman Army Hockey

Chile Tour 2015BRITISH ARMY HOCKEY

Hi, this is Gareth Andrew and I’m delighted to have been asked to provide some words of support for the forthcoming Army Senior Hockey Tour.

On a personal note I have just completed a strenuous but very successful season with Holcombe Hockey Club. The team have been promoted to the NOW Pensions Premier Division which I’m very much looking forward to.

Your goodwill tour to Chile will, I’m sure, give you the opportunity to play some very competitive games of hockey. It will also provide some valuable social time with your hosts. The team will be under the watchful eye of Guy Fordham a former England and GB international. He will expect high standards on the tour and will have them training hard to prepare for every game to give them the best chance of winning all their fixtures.

A big Thank You must go to Guy Fordham, Dan Cattermole and John Hooker for giving their support, both on and off the field, and taking the time to organise the trip to give the lads a fantastic opportunity to play hockey in another country. A special mention must go to Shane Vincent. I have known Shane for several years and have been coaching him at City of Peterborough Hockey Club over the last 3 years. This could be his last overseas Hockey Tour for the Army Seniors. I know Shane will give everything on the tour to ensure it is memorable and successful.

Finally, I would like to say good luck to you all and I await news of your successes.

Gareth Andrew

Words of supportThe Senior Men’s Army Hockey squad represents the elite level of British Army sport and is comprised of serving officers and soldiers, most of whom have recently deployed on operations in Afghanistan. Despite the challenges of the job, there is a huge amount of commitment displayed by members of the squad to represent the British Army and play at a highly competitive level of sport.

In addition to the regular hockey season, the Army Hockey Association (AHA) is keen to encourage its teams to tour overseas. These overseas tours have proven to be invaluable in helping the integration and cohesion of Army representative teams, as well as being a fantastic opportunity for young soldiers and officers to develop and showcase their leadership qualities in unfamiliar environments. The intention for this tour of Chile is no different. It aims to provide a challenging but rewarding experience for soldiers to develop their sporting skills within a completely foreign culture.

The tour is an ambitious undertaking and will see us play six matches in ten days against Manquehue Hockey Club, Prince of Wales Country Club, St Margaret’s and the Chile National U21 team. As a squad we are very much looking forward to the on field challenges we will face and also immersing ourselves in the culture of Chile off the pitch.
