Falls Prevention & Healthy Aging Month

It’s All About...

It’s All About Balance, Core and Posture, and how they work together. Balance exercises can help you stay independent by helping you avoid a disability that may result from falling. By doing strength and

balance exercises regularly you can reduce your risk of suffering from a debilitating fall. A strong core and

good posture also go a long way in keeping you upright! Regularly scheduled strength exercises will

improve your balance over time. Do your strength exercises, and incorporate balance techniques as you progress. Over time you will notice that these

exercises will help you feel more steady and confident when you move and engage in daily activities. Join Robin Maginn, Advance Senior

Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor, on Thursday, September 14, at 1:00 p.m. to learn the

strength, balance, core, and posture exercises necessary to reduce your fear of falling and help you feel stronger. Please pre-register for this free class by visiting the Muskie Center or by calling 873-4745.

Maine Maritime Museum, Bath, Maine

September is National Falls Prevention Month, and though most people are aware of the health risks associated with heart disease, stroke, and cancer, often overlooked is another type of serious health risk especially affecting older adults—the risk of injury due to falling. Falls can lead to injuries, such as bruising, bone fractures, and concussions. Any one of these injuries could require hospitalization, in-home nursing care, or other assisted living arrangements.

Regular physical activity and exercise combining weight training, muscle strengthening, and balance improvement will help reduce the risk of falls for older adults. Consider taking a Falls Prevention class, or new this month:
