From Personnel... We are pleased to welcome Bailey Kralemann as our new Nursery Supervisor. She was able to begin her employment with us last Sunday, and was in the nursery with Janie Wright on her last day. We are fortunate to have Bailey; she comes with a very impressive resume and a loving, child-friendly personality. We are also pleased to support Roanne Dean in her request for a well-deserved leave of absence for the summer to spend more time with her family. The term will begin on June 1 and end on August 31. Please say hello to Bailey and lend both her and Roanne your support.

Next Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. We will gather together once again to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the conversion of new souls. We will celebrate the birth of the church. As Disciples, we have been celebrating a LOT of Pentecost. By the year 2020, we expect to have celebrated the births of more than 1000 new con-gregations. Together we have not only been changing the landscape of churches in
North America, but we have all benefited. The New Church movement has taught us much about estab-lished church as well. So as we celebrate the gifts of new churches, we are asking you to make a special gift to the Pentecost Special Offering. Half of the money received will stay in our Mid-America region for New Hope Community Christian Church. The other half goes to Hope Partnership to provide training for new church leaders. As we extend and expand the table of the Disciples, all of us are enriched and blessed.
Notes from the Road
Red is a deep color, evoking blood, speaking to us of life, resting in embers that wind might stir to flame. We’ll remember this and pray to be reached by it this Sun-day. It’s Pentecost! If you have red to wear,
please wear it. Around my neck I’ll drape my red stole, which was worn before me by the Reverend Rolland G. Pfile … Angela’s father. Life and death and new life are part of the day, thanks be to God. And on Sunday, May 27, please come and gladly hear Rev. Greg Heinsman! I’ll be home in Athens, Georgia, from Monday, May 21 to Wednesday, May 30. Angela and I plan to install stairs in our garage and turn the attic into useful storage space. Cross your fingers for us that we’ll have that done before the three-day Georgia Tandem Rally starts. (We’ll ride regardless, but I’ll have more fun with an easy con-science!) What I’m listening to: perhaps it should be “Daisy” … but instead, it’s “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Mag-netic Zeroes ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4306i99LMXo ). Love is joyous, and joy always touches love! —Doug
Sunday School May 20
The “Conversations That Matter” group is about halfway through Celeste Headlee’s We Need to Talk: How to Have Conversations That Matter. This Sunday, our reading assignment is to read to pg. 101 (the end of chapter six). She addresses the cost of multitasking and puts a word in for mindfulness. New conversation part-ners are welcome to join at any time!
><><><><><><><><><><>< The Middle Room class will discuss chapter 5 (p. 85) “#NotAbandoned”, of Daniel Rice’s #Gospel: Life, Hope, and Truth for Generation Now.
What happens at a “Blessing of the bicycles!”? Come to church at 10am this Saturday, May 19, to learn first-hand . . . No bike required! Expect, though, an invitation to tell about one’s bike, an offer of oil for its chain (see James 5:14), and the speaking of a blessing for safe riding and much joy in it!

D. Our Relationship as Members to our Community and Country.
1. We accept our missional responsibility for the moral and spiritual
development of our community. We agree to live in a manner
consistent with our Christian convictions.
2. Because our Christian convictions set the standard for our
citizenship, our faith will lead us to be informed, to respect the law,
to vote our conscience, and to influence governmental officials
in working toward a just and morally responsible community.
3. We will be attentive to the moral and ethical implications of every
project we are asked to support.
4. We will maintain a good credit standing in the community. We will
expect our staff to do the same.
5. We will respect the rights and privileges of persons living near the
church and will endeavor not to inconvenience our neighbors nor
to harm their property.
6. We will establish no barriers that might prevent anyone from
worshipping with us.
7. We will work in a complimentary way with community service agencies
and organizations to most effectively serve and improve our
community.
In the coming weeks, the “Ethical Guidelines for Congregational Conduct” will be published in the newsletter. The fourth of seven installments follows:
To Abbey Road Christian Church
Members & Regular Friends,
Please accept my heartfelt
gratitude and thankfulness for
recent prayers, cards, and visits
while I was recovering from my
accidental fall.
The rehabilitation at the Lutheran Home in Cape
Girardeau has helped me to improve the use of my
right arm.
It is my prayer that God will continue to bless the
members of Abbey Road Christian Church.
Robert H. Brown
In June!
