Introducing Ourselves DAV College Jalandhar was founded in 1918 by PanditMehar Chand, Mahatma Hans

Raj, PanditLakpatRai and LalaRadha Ram in the sacred memory of Maharishi

DayanandSaraswati. During the last nine decades, the College has grown as the largest

institution of higher learning in this part of the country. The College represents a

confluence of the conventional with the current, the traditional with the truly modern and

is fully committed to the upliftment of the region as a whole without any distinction of

caste, colour or creed. The latest innovations in the field of Info-tech, Bio-tech and other

related subjects have been incorporated in tune with the changing scenario. We are living

in a “global village” today- thanks to communication technology. Hence, our avowed aim

is to create a progressive and creative model of life-long learning, teaching, evaluation

and research which is totally in gear with the needs of changing times, and which is in

perfect rhythm with the Vedic wisdom and modern scientific temper.

The Plan of action chalked out by IQAC in the beginning of the year towards Quality Enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year. • To ensure quality of education with constant academic upgradations & evaluation.

• To import value and need based education which is globally relevant and yet rooted in the matrix of Indian Society.

• Orientation of new students about Code of Conduct of the College.

• To encourage the faculty to be equipped with modern teaching aids and new concepts of teaching and learning.

• To upgrade science laboratories with modern equipments.

• To encourage the faculty & students for quality research and consultancy services.

• To enhance Training & Placement Activities.

• Career counselling at the time of admission and career guidance at the end of academic sessions.

• To introduce need based value added courses.

• To promote research work through research based activities.

• To upgrade and enhance the infrastructural and academic facilities.

Part: B

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution: • College is proud of its glorious achievements in respect of the annual

examination results in 2007, the students of this institution won 6 Gold Medals, 16 First Positions, 13 Second Position, and 5 Third Positions in the University Examinations.

• The Post-Graduate Department of Chemistry got recognised by Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India under DST-FIST Schemeand a grant of Rs. 41.90 Lakhs was sanctioned for setting up Departmental Computer lab, Departmental Library and Renovation of Teaching Labs.

• College Hockey team won the 15th Nehru Sail Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey Tournament, and got 96,000/- cash prize. This was the 9th consecutive victory, which is a record in itself.

• College won 72 Points in the Inter-College Sports Championship of GNDU, Amritsar.

• During this session many College players represented India in different games,Rahul Sharma represented India in Afro-Asian U-19 Cricket tournament also toured Sri Lanka.Maninder Singh, Davinder Pal Singh, Prabhdeep Singh and Ravi Pal were selected for Indian Hockey Team for Pre-World Cup held in Holland. Our student Jagdeep Singh represented India in Boxing.Rakesh Kumar participated in Indo-Pak games in Table-Tennis. College students Randeep Gill, Sachin Shoor, ManikKohli and Gaurav Sharma were selected for minor county cricket matches in England. Sukhpal Singh and Amandeep Singh got Silver Medal in National Athletics meet held at Guwahati in Assam. Saravanjit Singh was a member of India U-18 Hockey team in the International Hockey tournament held at Hyderabad. Narinder Singh was appointed coach of Yoga team at JinnauShingama Yoga Fitness Club Beijing, China. Ajay Shori made it to Juniors India Fencing Team. Jasbir Singh was selected for SherePunjab Kabaddi Team which toured Canada. Jujhar Singh was included in India U-21 Hockey Team for International Hockey tournament. Jaswinder Singh got selected for India U-18 Hockey team for Dhaka tour. Randhir Ray was selected for India U-21

Handball team which participated in the Junior Asia Handball Championship held in Japan. TaruwarKohli represented India U-19 in the Junior World Cup held in Malaysia.

• College students actively participated in the Zonal and Inter-Zonal Youth Festival of Guru Nanak DevUniversity and won 54 positions in all.

2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG): • Add on Course inCommunication Skillsunder UGC Scheme.

• Add on Course inFood Science & Quality Control under UGC Scheme.

• Add on Course inData Care Management. 3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:

As college is affiliated to GNDU, Amritsar, it is bound to implement the curriculum designed by it.A number of faculty members of our college are members of the Board of Studies of their respective departments and they effectively played vital role in the preparation and modification of the syllabus as per the changing requirements of the subject.

4. Inter-disciplinary Programmes started: The institution offers a variety of courses ranging from Music to Mathematics and

Journalism to Bio-Technology.Hence, there is huge scope of Inter-Disciplinary learning and Teaching.

• Department of English: Add on course in Communication Skill and spoken English are open for all students from various Departments.

• Department of Punjabi: Punjabi as a regional language is compulsory for all students of various courses.

• Department of Music:Students from different departments take part in vocal and instrumental Music.

• Department of Botany and Geography: These two departments are actively involved in teaching ‘Environment’ as a compulsory subject to students of various programmes.

• Department of Political Science: Teachers of this Department teach Public Administration and Political Science as Optional Subjects at UG and PG Level.

• Centre for Competitive Examinationsorganises Group Discussions on Current issues for students from all streams. It conduct Workshops/ short duration programmes on ‘Personality Development’ ‘Interview Techniques’, ‘Time Management, ‘Stress Management’, ‘Communication Skills’ etc. for students from different departments.

7. Initiative Towards Faculty Development Programmes: The quality of faculty is the anchor sheet of this great institution. The College has a

faculty of selfless, dedicated and talented teachers who are resonating with ideas

and are easily accessible. Amongst them are authors and critics of repute and

eminence. At present, there are 40 members of staff who possess Ph. D./ D.Litt.

Degrees and 60 who possess M. Phil degree. Many members of the faculty are

seriously involved in research projects and academic enhancement activities.

• Dr. Vijay Kumari Gupta, Department of Sanskrit, was awarded Ph. D. degree on the topic “The Literary Study of Bhatttikavya”by the GNDU, Amritsar.

• Dr.JeevanAsha, Department of Sanskrit, was awarded Ph. D degree on the topic “Values of Life in Brithattraiya” by the GNDU, Amritsar.

• Dr. D.K. Paul, Department of Punjabi, was awarded Ph. D degree on the topic “Social Interaction Strategies and BalwantGargi’sSharbat Dian Ghuttan: A Linguistic Study”by the GNDU, Amritsar.

• Dr. Dinesh Arora, Department of Political Science, was awarded Ph. D degree on the topic “Coalition Politics at the Centre Since 1996”by the GNDU, Amritsar.

• Mrs. Deepali, Department of Economics, submitted her Ph.D. thesis on the topic “Inflation Unemployment Trade Off in India” to GNDU, Amritsar.

• Sh. Parveen Sharma, Department of Philosophy, got registered himself for Ph.D., on the topic “Problem Freedom and Determinism in the Philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev and Spinoza” with the Department of Philosophy, GNDU, Amritsar.

• Sh. PunitPuri, Department of Zoologygotenrolled for Ph.D., on the topic “Project Tiger Moths (Lepidoptera) with the Department of Zoology, Punjabi University, Patiala.

• Dr. Rajeev K. Sharma,PGDepartment of Chemistry, got published research papers in national and international Journals : of applied polymer science, Wiley Inter Science (V. 106, November. 15, 2007), and in the proceedings of international conference on ‘Advances in Polymer Science &Technology’ Organised by Asian polymer Association and IIT Delhi in Delhi (28-31 Jan, 2008), Punjab Science Congress organised by Thapar University at Patiala (7-9 February, 2008), and National Conference on Recent Advances in Innovative Materials at NIT, Hamirpur (16-17 February, 2008).

• Dr. Kirpal Singh,PG Department of English, published his second collection of poems entitled ‘Descending Dark Stairs’, an extensive write-up which also appeared in the Hindustan Times (4thMarch, 2008).

• Sh. Anoop Vats,Department of English, published a paper titled “Novelisation of Nascent Industrialisation: Bakhtinian Study of Anand’s the Big Heart” in English Journal, Vol. 7, No.2, December 2007.He attended National Seminar on “The Role of Public Funded Educational Institutions in New Scenario”, at AIFUCTO, Hyderabad, October 5-7, 2007.

• Sh. Harish Kumar, Department of Commerce, cleared the Company Secretary course conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) in first attempt.

• Sh. Vijay Kumar Mago, Department of Computer Science, got published his articles in Journals of National and International Repute: AIME 2007, Netherlands (July, 7, 2007), CEEMAS 2007, Germany (September. 25-27, 2007), Journal of Computer Science, Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar. His ‘ca Dip: decision making probabilistic system for dental crisis’ will be published by Springer, Germany, as a book chapter.

• Dr.Ashwani Sharma, Department of Political Science, acted as Resource Person at National Seminar sponsored by UGC on “Indo-US Nuclear Deal” at Khalsa College, Garhdiwala on January 18, 2008. He also delivered a Lecture on “Value Based Administration” at Hindu Kanya College, Kapurthala on February 16, 2008. He Participated as a Resource Person in National Seminar on “Value Oriented Education” at Guru Nanak College of Education, Kapurthala on March 8, 2008. He gave a talk on “Palestine Issue and India’s Foreign Policy” at BD Arya College for Girls, Jalandhar Cantt on March 12, 2008. He also delivered a Lecture on “Teaching & Teachers: Emerging Scenario” at Hindu Kanya College, Kapurthala, March 18, 2008.

• Sh. Nitin Bhatia, Department of Computer Science, got published his article ‘Comparative Study of TSP Algorithms’ in Journal of Computer Science, Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar.

• Dr. N.K. Neb,PG Department of English, got published a book entitled ‘Insight : AStudy of the Poetry of Kulbhashan Kushal.’He also presented a paper on ‘Human Values and Literature’ at the UGCsponsored national seminar held at SHD KMV, Kalasanghian.

• Sh. B. P.S. Bedi,PG Department of English, published six articles in a fortnightly magazine entitled “The Quest”.

• Dr. R. B. Singh,PG Department of Punjabi, brought out his 11th book “Malham Ate Hor Kahania”, a collection of short stories. He has been editing a literary journal ‘Parvachan’ since 2000.

• Dr. B.B. Sharma,Department of Political Science, completed a UGC sponsored research project on “The Office of Lokpal in Punjab.”

• Sh. A.K. Trivedi, Head, Department of Geography, completed his UGCsponsored research project on “Changing Land Use Pattern of Jalandhar City: Spatio and Temporal Perspectives” UGC had sanctioned Rs.45,000/-for the project.

• Dr. Rajnish Bahadur Singh, Head, PG Department of Punjabi, presented four papers, on ‘Globalisation and its Impact on Punjabi Literature’ at a 2-day seminar, organised by Punjabi academy of social sciences, language and literature at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall, Jalandhar, on ‘Alternative Punjabi poetry of Last Decade’ at Delhi university, Delhi , on ‘Progressive Punjabi Short Story : a New Perspective’ at Guru Nanak dev University, Amritsar, and on ‘American-Punjabi Short Story’ at SDPM College, Rayya. He published a paper titled “Komi Mukti Sangras Da Galpi Pravachan: Laher Vadhi Gai” in book Gyani Kaser Singh Jivan Te Rachana (ed.) S. Sohinder Bir, Raminder Kaur, 2008. His article titled “Kahani De Vidhagat Masle”, published in Pravachan, January-March, 2008.

• Sh. Anoop Vats,PG Department of English, presented a paper entitled “Role of Public-Funded Educational Institutions in the New Scenario” at an AIFUCTO organised conference. He also attended a 1-day Workshop on ‘Bio-diversity conservation’ at Panjab University, Chandigarh.

• Sh. Sharad Manocha,PGDepartment of English, presented a paper entitled “Improving Vocabulary for Effective Communication” at a national seminar at M.T.S.M. College, Ludhiana.

• Sh. V.K. Sareen,PGDepartment of Commerce, presented a paper on “Financial Inclusion as a Successful Practice by Capital Local Area Bank: A Case study” at the 60th Diamond Jubilee Conference of Indian Commerce Association held at Hyderabad. He also attended a seminar on ‘Intellectual Property for Prosperity’, organised by FICCI at Ludhiana. He served as a Faculty member at a training orientation programme for CSC qualified persons organised by NIRCof the Institute of Company Secretaries in September 2007.

• Sh. Naveen Saini, Librarian, attended Refresher and General Orientation courses in Library & Information Science conducted by the Academic Staff College of GNDU. Amritsar.

• Sh. Dinesh Arora,PGDepartment of Political Science, presented a paper on ‘Judicial Activism vs. Legislature’ in a UGC sponsored national seminar held at R.R. Bawa DAV College for Women, Batala on 16thFebruary, 2008. • Dr. Vijay Kumari Gupta,PGDepartment of Sanskrit, delivered an extension lecture on ‘Dharma’ at Arya Girls College, Ambala Cantt on 15th Sept. 2007. She also attended UGC sponsored Two day National Seminar and presented a paper on “The Concept and Purpose of Pilgrimage Tourism” at S.D. College, Ambala, on March 12-13, 2008.

• Sh. Vijay Kumar Mago and Sh. Nitin Bhatia,Department of Computer Science, attended a short term course on ‘IT in Health Care’ at the Computer Centre, IIT Delhi (December 17-31, 2007) and attended a Refresher Course in “RC-181, CIT Awareness, Multi Disciplinary”, from 10th September to 29 September 2007.

• Sh. Nitin Bhatia,Department of Computer Science, has been placed on the list of reviewers for the prestigious international journal ‘Electronic Letters on Computer Vision and Image Analysis.’

• Sh. Vijay Mago,Department of Computer Science, has been selected as a reviewers for the selection of papers for the 4th Indian International Conference on Artificial Intelligence to be held in Tumkur (India).

• Dr. L.P. Upadhyay, Head Department of Sanskrit, presented a research paper in a national seminar at V.V.B.I.S. & L.S. Punjabi University, Sadhu Ashram, Hoshiarpur.

• Dr. Ram Avtar Sharma, Head, PGDepartment of Hindi, delivered lectures at Govt. College, Kapurthala, Govt. Sen. Secondary School, Kapurthala and Govt. Arya Sr. Sec. School, Phagwara.

• Dr. Usha Uppal,PGDepartment of Hindi, was selected from Punjab by Ministry of Human Resource Development to participate in a Hinditar Bhashi Hindi Navlekhak Shivir held at Rajkot (Gujarat).

• Dr. Balwinder Singh,PGDepartment of Hindi, presented a research paper at a National seminar at Khalsa College, Amritsar.

• Sh. Rajeev Puri, Department of Commerce Attended Refresher Course in Commerce & Management at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, from 26.12.2007 to 15.1.2008.

8. Seminars/Guest Lectures/Workshops Conducted at College:

• An Extension lecture was organised by the Department of English on 8thFebruary 2007.Dr.G. D. Sharma Retd.Professor of English,GNDU Regional Centre,Jalandhar addressed the students on ‘Major Orientations in Literary Theory’. He explained in simplest possible terms,with familiar examples from life and literature,the various trends and changes in English literary criticism starting from Socrates down to postmodernism and deconstruction.

• The Post Graduate Department of Political Scienceorganised an interactive session withSh.RajinderBhagat (IFS), High Commissioner of India in

Mozambique. He formally released 6th volume of Research Journal of the department.

• Department of Food Science and Technologyorganisedan extension lecture on ‘Health versus Vegetable Oil’ by Dr.Rajeev Sharma , a nutritional expert from A.P.Organics Industry, on 20th Nov.2007.Dr.Sharma talked on the role of oils in health and said that rice bran oil and groundnut oil are quite close to the recommendations made by NIN,Hyderbad.

• PGDepartmentof Zoology and Bio-technologyorganisedan interactive session by Dr.JagbirSingh,Professor of Zoology, Punjabi University,Patiala.

• PGDepartment of Physics, under the aegis of Physics Association,arranged a talk by our alumnus Mr.TulsiNandanParashar, a researcher in Physics in the U.S.A. speaking on the ‘Careers in General Physics Research’,Mr.Parashar shed light on the Plasma Labulence.He apprised the students of opportunities to go abroad for higher studies through GATE and TOEFEL examinations.

• The Physics department organised a talk on ‘AURA’by a renowned spiritual counseller and healer Dr.J. Lal. Dr.Rajinder Moudgil, Reader, DepartmentPhysics,KurukshetraUniversity,Kurukshetra also delivered two talks on ‘Physics in less than Three Dimensions andThe Raman Effect’, on 24th January,2008.

• The College Mahila Club celebrated International Women’s Day by organising a Seminar on “Women Empowerment” on 5th March 2008.Mrs.SaritaTewari and Mrs.Ranjna Mevi,two eminent TV artists,were honoured on the occasion.Mrs.Renu Gupta President,MahilaClub,welcomed he distinguished guests, and spoke on the importance of and need forwomen empowerment in the country.

9. Research Projects: • Dr.R.B.Singh,Department of Punjabi,submitted a proposal of ‘Major Research

Project to UGC for approval on the topic “Dalit Philosophy An Ideological Prospective(With Special Reference to Punjab Dalit Stories)”.

• Dr.K.S.Thind, Department of Punjabi,submitted a proposal of Major Research Project to UGC for approval on the topic “Experiments in Punjabi Theatre After 1960”.

National Cadet Corps (NCC) The three wings of the NCC in the college remained active during 2007-08 for

community services.

Army Wing The college has one company and one platoon of NCC (Army Wing) commanded

by Capt.S.K.Tuli and Lt.SameerSharma.The Army Wing remained active during the session 2007-08.Some of its activities and achievements are as follows:

• 25 Cadets attended Special Summer Trekking Camp at Palampur under the leadership of Cap.S.K.Tuli from 4th June on 14th June 2007.The Cadets participated in Mountaineering and Rap-ling activities conducted in the camp with enthusiasm.

• The Cadets plated saplings of Citrus,Jamun and Guva in the college campus.

• Vineet Saini participated in Pre-R.D.Camp at Shree Hargobindpur Sahib.

• Cadet Anoop attended sea-training camp at Mumbai and was selected as Cadet Captain.

National Service Scheme (NSS) National Service Scheme based on Swami Vivekananda’s teaching in doing a

yeoman’s service in society. The scheme has been introduced in the college through the University by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. It provides opportunities to the students to gain valuable experience in community service through programmes such as eradication of illiteracy, slum clearing, roadbuilding, country health service, agriculturedevelopment, removal of untouchability,family planning, national integration campaigns and other national development projects. The aim of NSS is to develop among the students a sense of participation in nation building by providing a creative outlet to their energies. The college has four contingents of one hundred students each. As many as four Programme Officers look after the department under the Deanship of Dr.J.R.Garg.

During 2007-08 sessions NSS Department organised three Service Camps in Nagra and Variana Villages.It also organised Blood Donation Camps in association with NGOs - PAHAL & CWPC.It celebrated ‘Environment Day’ and ‘Earth Day’ by planting trees in open land behind M.C. Hostel.

31. Support from the Parent-teachers association and its activities:

Though there is no Parent-Teachers Association. However, parents are regularity informed about the attendance and performance of their wards. Parents are welcomed to meet Principal and Faculty members on all working days.

32. Health Services:

The College has a well-established ‘College Hospital’ with qualified Doctor and Paramedical Staff to provide health services to both day-scholars and hostellers. However, there is super speciality Hospital within two km radius of the College. In case of emergency, College staff car is eveready to take any ‘student patient’ to the Hospital.

33. Performance in Sports Activities:

The college is rightly known as the nursery of sports. In 2007-08 itssportspersons won distinctions at the National and International levels. Eight of them hold the prestigious Arjuna Awards. Among our sportsmen, 17 are Olympians and about 100 players have represented India at the international level:

Competition organised by Indian Cultural Association, Kartarpur.Our artists romped home with six first and one second position.

2. The College artists lifted the Best College Trophy at the Cultural Carnival 2008, organised by Hindu Kanya College,Kapurthala on 28.1.2008.

3. Our Group Song team participated in the competition organised at ‘Mela Gadri Babian Da’ and won the First Prize.

4. One of our items was declared as best at the Republic Day Function organised by District Administration.It was awarded a cash prize.

5. Harballabh Vandana composed by Ms.Reena and Sh.Kailash got selected by Harballabh Sangeet Sabha and had the honour of being sung at the inauguration of Harballabh Sangeet Samellan, 2007.

6. Jyot Parkash represented GNDU at the National Level Debate organised by Indian Association of Parliamentarians for Population and Development, New Delhi on 17th& 18th November,2007.

7. Jai Inder Sangha participated in the Declamation Contest organised by DRV DAV College,Phillaur, and was awarded a consolation prize.

8. Jaspreet Mahal participated in the Painting Competition organised by Citizens Welfare and Protection Council, and won Third Prize on the World Aids Day.

9. Our college team participated in Synergy 2008, and won First Prize in Choreography, Second Prize in Poster Making and Third Prize in Collage Making.

DAV FEST- 2007

The EMA Department organised an Inter-department Cultural entitled ‘DAV Fest 2007’ on 29th,30th and 31st August, 2007.The purpose was to identify the talented students who could be groomed as mature artists. The participation by a large number of students was quite encouraging. The Running Trophy was bagged by the Department of Commerce and Management. The Department of Life Sciences were the runner-up. The trophy for the event was instituted by Dr.J.R.Sharma in the sacred memory of his revered father.

EMA Annual Function

A colourful cultural evening was organised in the College Auditorium on 1st March, 2008. Sh.Rana Gurjit Singh,M.P.(Lok Sabha),was the Chief Guest.A three – hour cultural feast, which included a brilliant cameo performance by the renowned Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans, enthralled the large gathering.

On this occasion, Sh.Hans Raj Hans, an alumnus of this college, was specially felicitated on his being awarded the coveted Padma Shri Award by the Govt.of India.Sh.B.S.Narang, an accomplished classical vocalist,former Faculty Member and alumnus of the college, was also honoured for his distinguished achievements in the domain of music.Among those honoured were Sh.Chetan Sharda, a stage and TV artist,Sh.Neeraj Kaushik,well-known playwright and director, and Ms Rekha Kashyap, the winner of ‘Chak De Punjabi’, a laughter programme on Star TV.Ten college artists who achieved top positions in academics were also honoured.

36. Activities of the Guidance and Counselling Cell:

Guidance and Counselling Cell has very important role in the entire college life of the students.The services provided by it include: • Careercounselling and guidance at the time of admission.

• Counselling and guidance of the weak students.

• Emotional support and guidance to new-comers.

• Identification of slow and weak learners and arranging remedial classes for them.

• Organising extension lectures on Personality Enhancement, Time Management, Examination Stress Management, Motivation etc.

• Attending genuine complaints of the students and referring them to the Dean Concerned.

37. Placement Services provided to Students: In order to help the students to get lucrative jobs, the college had established a Training and Placement Cell in 2003. Presently it is active under the Deanship of experienced faculty member Sh. Rajiv Sharma, Post-graduate Department of Commerce. He is assisted by Sh.Ashok Kapur,Sh.Pankaj Gupta,Sh.Rakesh Kumar,Sh.Kunwar Rajeev, Sh.Manav Aggarwal, Mrs. Sharanjit,Dr.Rajeev Sharma (Chemistry), Sh.Rajat Sharma,Sh.Vijay Mago,Sh. Rajiv Puri, Sh. Orvindra Singh, Sh.Ashish Arora and Sh.Arun Prashar. Special campus recruitment drives are a permanent feature of the academic calendar of the college.

The aim of the college is to get 1500 and even more jobs for our meritorious students pursuing professional courses in the faculties of Computer Science, Business Management, Food Science & Technology andCommerce etc.

During 2007-08 a number of companies came and organised written tests and interviews for various positions. Our students made a mark by clearing all the hurdles and got brilliant offers. In all, 233 candidates were selected by the visiting companies with following details:

38. Development Programmes for Non-Teaching Staff: • College has a Credit and Thrift Society both for the Teaching and Non-Teaching

Staff. It provides loans and financial assistance at the time of family needs to Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff.

Two known NGOs of the city PAHAL & CWPC (Citizens Welfare and Protection Council) have direct links with the institution. • The PG Department of Political Science publishes its research journal. The research articles of eminent national and international scholars get suitable place in it. Even its Advisory Board includes the name of National & International scholars.
