Descriptions of Training Sessions: Making A Difference: Reporting Child

Abuse and Neglect

TRAINER: SHANNON TAYLOR

This comprehensive training is for all mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and neglect and will focus on the following: Identifying the signs of abuse and neglect; discussing who must report, as well as how a report is made; and identifying research-based protective factors that can help prevent child maltreatment.

Building Relationships with Families and Children

TRAINER: SHANNON TAYLOR

In this training, we will discuss the importance and long-lasting effects of building relationships with children and families. We will identify strategies for building positive relationships and discuss how doing so can positively impact and influence both the educational and home environments.

Teamwork: Let’s Work Together!

TRAINER: AMY WILLIS

This session will discuss teamwork at work and why it is important. We will talk about what a good team member is and how to go from a good team member to a great team member. We learn from interacting with our colleagues through various activities.

Communicating with Families: More than Just Words!

TRAINER: AMY WILLIS

This session will help participants become better communicators with the families of

the children who are in their care. Participants will be shown that communication

isn’t just having conversations, but can also be in written/multimedia forms. There

are also many other things to consider in communicating. By gaining particular

information about the family, they will be able to determine which form is the best

option.

Let’s Get Ethical

TRAINER: JESSE PATTERSON

During this session, participants will learn about the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. We will discuss how this can help early childcare professionals face ethical dilemmas within their profession.

Why They Do What They Do TRAINER: PAULA STEWART

Based on Kadija Johnston’s definition of social/emotional development, caregivers will explore what infants and toddlers need for healthy social/emotional development. Power Point Lecture and DVD. They will also explore ways they can support these needs in their classrooms.

Child Portfolios: Handle With Love

TRAINER: PAULA STEWART

Caregivers will learn the importance of creating a child portfolio and how it can not only assist in individualizing lesson plans for children but can also be an instrument to show love and appreciation for each child’s growth and development.

The Importance of Developmentally Appropriate Practice

TRAINER: AMY WILLIS

This session will allow participants to gain a better understanding of

Developmentally Appropriate Practice. They will be given information on the 12

Principles of Child Development and Learning, 5 Guidelines for Effective Teaching,

the 10 Effective DAP Teaching Strategies as well as what DAP looks like for each age

group.

Kids Have Stress Too!

TRAINER: JENNIFER CONKLE

Children can experience stress just as adults can. Children may not be capable of labeling the stress they feel, but you can help them in recognizing and coping with their stress related feelings. For this reason, it is important that individuals working directly with children understand how to identify stress in young children. This session will help you recognize why and how children experience stress, how to assist them with understanding their feelings, and how to model effective coping mechanisms for children and families.

Let’s Make A Menu

TRAINER: JENNIFER CONKLE

What’s for lunch? At times a nutritious meal for the children and adults in your program can be challenging. This session will discuss the components of a healthy meal and tips for making your meals nutrient rich and delicious while meeting CACFP requirements.

What is the Key 2 a Healthy Start for WV’s Children?

Did you know that approximately 32% of children ages 2-19 are overweight or obese? The trend begins in

early childhood with 27% of children ages 2-5. By taking part in the Key 2 a Healthy Start initiative, WV

child care centers can become leaders in reducing childhood obesity rates in WV and raising a healthier gen-

eration of kids.

Key 2 a Healthy Start is a statewide quality improvement initiative in early care and education with the

goal of preventing childhood obesity. Participating child care centers attend 3

one-day workshops that cover:

Nutrition

Physical activity

Garden-based learning

Personal health and wellness

Parent Engagement & outreach

Healthy celebrations

Workshop presenters include a pediatrician, registered dietician, and pediatric exercise physiologist. Each

participating program also receives on-site technical assistance visits after each workshop and will become

part of a peer learning network. Key 2 a Healthy Start centers receive MyPlate portion plates and placemats,

portable physical activity equipment, parent outreach materials, and much more! The workshops are free and

WV STARS registered.

The 2017 workshop dates have not yet been determined, but will depend on the availability and pref-

erences of participating centers. If you’re interested in participating or would like more information,

please contact Jessica Dianellos at [email protected] or call 304-388-3409.
