Bulletin Deadline Monday, 12:00 noon
Dear Friends in Christ,We hope to see many parishioners and their friends this Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. in the church for the celebration of Vespers and a chance to see the work recently completed in the church and priest’s sacristy. Some details are still to come such as a new exterior door for the sacristy, but the work is substantially completed. Today’s Gospel reading shows the great concern and reverence Jesus had for the Temple in Jerusalem, not as an architectural or artistic achievement, but as a place of genuine prayer and piety. We pray that our newly beautified church will be such a house for God, where authentic worshipers gather to pray “in spirit and in truth.”
This Sunday, November 11, also marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War. During the war, the pope was Benedict XV, who referred to the conflict as “the suicide of civilized Europe.” The Pope tried to mediate a peace between the warring powers in both 1916 and 1917 without success. The Holy See was excluded from the peace process that led to the Treaty of Versailles, which some blame for putting into place the conditions that would lead to the outbreak of the Second World War. These are interesting facts to keep in mind if you hear someone blaming the Catholic Church for not doing enough to end wars.
Sincerely Yours, in Christ, Fr. Thomas Buffer
