EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTOur Emergency Department is an immediate access clinic run by Consultants.

We can provide you with:

Immediate access to a Consultant’s opinion Same day investigations Immediate management plan Prompt discharge letter

Cardiology, General Surgery, Medical, Orthopaedic and Urology patients can be seen at the Emergency Department.

The Emergency Department offers a dedicated GP phone line which is manned by an Emergency Nurse to facilitate direct referrals and discussion of individual cases.

How much will it cost?

All patients presenting to the Emergency Department will be charged €150 regardless of their insurance cover. Additional tests such as bloods and x-rays will be extra (for individual rates please consult our Emergency Department administrator at 01 – 645 9016).

Should a patient be admitted, then the Health Insurer may cover all costs EXCEPT the initial €150 consultation fee.

We will also endeavour to communicate the outcome of each patient’s visit to the

referring GP the following day. This can be done by phone, fax or email and the department will work with each GP to tailor this response to accommodate the need of their individual practices.

We are happy to facilitate your patients with a routine appointment within a week and same day testing for urgent referrals.Cardiology tests include: Resting ECG

CARDIAC CATHETERISATION LABORATORYThe cardiac cath lab is a state of the art facility with a full range of services for performing a comprehensive list of diagnostic and interventional procedures which include:

Coronary AngiogramPercutaneous coronary stenting – including a full range of complex procedures e.g. multivessel, left main, chronic occlusions etc.

FFR, IVUS & OCT – new technologies that use intracoronary pressure wire/ultrasound/infrared waves, to enhance angiography in the definitive diagnosis of significant Coronary artery disease, or for exclusion of same. Also helps in proper alignment of Stents.

Device Implantation – Loop recorders, pacemakers and defibrillators including heart failure devices.

Electrophysiology Studies and Ablation Therapy – for rhythm disturbances

Percutaneous Transcatheter Septal Closures – Patent Foramen Ovale, Atrial Septal Defects, Patent Ductus Arteriosis etc.

NEUROPHYSIOLOGY DEPARTMENTThe Neurophysiology department provides diagnostic testing for

seizures, encephalopathy/confusion, non epileptic seizures, carpal

tunnel syndrome, poly-neuropathy, compression neuropathies,

radiculopathy, myopathy, neuromuscular junction disorders,

autonomic disorders, multiple sclerosis (evoked potentials) and

trigeminal disorders.

Testing for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (NCS)

Upper and lower limb nerve conduction studies (NCS)

We have a MS Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Hermitage Medical Clinic

who liaises closely with the Neurologists providing a multidisciplinary

treatment approach for MS patients attending the hospital.

RESPIRATORY DEPARTMENTThe Respiratory / Sleep Studies Department provides:

Pulmonary Function Tests: used to confirm the diagnosis of a respiratory disease, track disease progression and enable cliniciansassess a patient’s response to therapy.We provide a comprehensive range of testing includingSpirometry +/- reversibility, Diffusion Capacity (DLCO), Lungvolumes (HE dilution/body plethysmography) and Muscle strengthtesting (MIPS/MEPS/SNIP). Tests are reported on by a Respiratory Physician and are available in <1week, although preliminary reportsare available instantaneously.

Mannitol Challenge Test: used to confirm a diagnosis ofAsthma where there is a diagnostic uncertainity. Challengetests are by Respiratory Consultant referral only.

Skin Allergy Tests: Skin Prick testing is used for the diagnosisof an allergic disease. The skin prick test has a good sensitivityand specificity for the presence of allergen specific IgE and is theprimary mode of skin testing for immediate IgE mediated allergy. Small amount of allergens are introduced into the epidermis.Allergens include ; pollen, dusts, animal dander, moulds.

Sleep Studies: Nocturnal Polysomnography (PSG) is the goldstandard for overnight sleep assessments. The PSG is performedas an inpatient in the hospital. It measures sleep cycles, sleepstages and respiratory effort by recording brain waves (EEG),electrical activity of muscles (EMG), eye movement (EOG),breathing rate, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), heartrhythm (ECG), snore, airflow and leg movements. The studyare analysed by the Clinical Physiologist and reported by theRespiratory Physician.
