How DJ Got To Sleepy Hollow

By Z As Told By DJ

It all started when I was lost at sea. Then fishermen came. They tried to catch me! I tried to run away but they caught me(sigh). I was trapped in a cage. The fishermen sold me. A few days later I was on something called the news show. He presented me and said the winner is Mrs. Elliot’s class. Then I was brought to Mrs. Elliot’s class. They were thinking where to put me. So they just put me on the American flag. I stayed there for a few days. That is how I got to Sleepy Hollow.

THE ATTIC By “S”

Have you ever heard of

an attic? The attic is a

place

to store things but we all

know

that there is more to it. I

bet there's

ghosts and evil spirits up

in that

mysterious and dark at-

tic. But if

you encounter yourself

going into

an attic I predict you will

never see

daylight again.

Why We Shouldn’t Use Animals For Clothes By : G

I’m going to tell you why we shouldn't use animals for clothes. It is very harmful. Re-member almost everyone is wearing an animal even though they don’t know it. But there are ways you can help them. We shouldn’t use animals for clothes because it is harmful for animals. Each year millions of animals are killed for their fur and their skin. In rabbit farms rabbits live alone in dark shacks. Every three months workers pull out the rabbit’s hair. Geese that are used for feathers never get to go outside, swim, fly, or raise babies. This is unhealthy for the geese. In Canada sealers kill baby seals. These seals are nor-mally three months or younger in age. Cows are kept in big barns until the are sent off to the slaughter house where they are hung upside down and their throats are slit. That's all to get some leather. Workers that work at sheep farms normally cut off the sheep’s tails and poke holes in their ears both without pain killers. When sheep get sheared people often do it as fast as pos-sible so they ca get more money.

This often causes then to acci-dentally shear off some of the sheep’s ears. Animals are used for a lot a of different clothes. Down is a feather that comes from geese and ducks. Some countries in Asia use dogs and cat for leath-er instead of cows. Rabbits fur is used for coats, sweaters, gloves, and scarves. This is because their fur is so soft. Geese are used for bed sheets, coats, pil-lows and sleeping bags. Sheep are used for their wool and skin. Cows are used for boots and other leather shoes, purses, bags, and leather jackets. Down free products are cheaper and can be found at Target. Make sure to pay attention to the labels on your shoes they all mean something. The one that is has the rounded edges is leath-er. The same one with the dia-mond inside is coated leather. These are bad to buy because they come from animals. The diamond one is man made. The one that looks like a weave is textile. You can buy these. Most animal fur free clothes are cheaper than the real thing. Syn-thetic shoes help animals. They look the same but they aren’t made from animals. So if you buy synthetic shoes and clothes and watch labels on your shoes you can help save animals lives. Make sure when you go clothes or shoe shopping that you don’t buy anything with those nasty symbols on them. If you do this you can help the mil-lions of animals that suffer every year.

Have you ever wondered how the

Sleepy Hollow Channel 6 Dolphin

News gets created? Four teams of

seven 5th graders each rotate

throughout the school year. When

on duty, each team rotates

amongst the different news crew

jobs. On your screen in your

classroom, you see the News

Anchors, Weather Reporter, and

Special Guests. But behind the

scenes, we also have students

working the cameras, switching

scenes on the video mixer, running

the PowerPoint slides, and

scrolling the script. It’s a total

team effort to put the news on each

school morning!

News room – behind the scenes!

Fantastic “Paws for Books”

Fair!

With snow days and spring

break, this year’s book fair had

a wacky schedule but still end-

ed up being tons of fun. It was

fun to guess which pet went

with which teacher in our Paws

for Books theme. Did you

know that every purchase at

the fair helps our school’s li-

brary? It’s true! By having a

book fair, our school earns

money towards our library –

and then Mrs. Oswalt uses that

money to buy new books for

our collection. Many of the

books from the fair are now

being added to our library

shelves PLUS Mrs. Oswalt has

her eye on some new animal

books . . . let her know if there

is a particular animal you want

added to our library! Thank

you to everyone who support-

ed this year’s fair!
