Did Washington Irving’s Infamous Tale Of A Headless Horseman Riding Through The Tangled Oaks On A
Mysterious Halloween Night Actually Occur On The Grounds Of The Club…Well One May Never Know, But That Legend As Well As So Many Others Are Woven Into The Fabric Of What Is The Sleepy Hollow Country Club.
The 338 Acres Of “Washington Irving” Hills And The Woodlands That Make Up The Sleepy Hollow Country Club, Were Once The Estate of Mr. Butler Wright. The Butler’s Family Home Was Situated To The North Of The Current Pool Complex And For Many Years Served As The Club’s Golf House.
The Estate Was Purchased By Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard, Granddaughter Of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, And Her Husband Colonel Elliot F. Shepard With The Cornerstone Being Laid in 1893 For Their American Renaissance, McKim, Mead and White Designed Gilded Age Era Home Over Looking The Hudson River Known As “Woodlea”.
In 1910 The Now Widowed Mrs. Shepard Sold The Home And Grounds To William Rockefeller and Frank A. Vanderlip Who In Turn Deeded The Property To The Organizers Of The Sleepy Hollow Country Club Which Was Formed In 1911. Many Of The Club’s Original Advisory Committee Members Were Prominent Social and Business Figures of The Time Including John Jacob Astor, Oliver Harriman, V. Everit Macy, William and Percy Rockefeller and Cornelius Vanderbilt. The Tradition Of Excellence Upon Which Sleepy Hollow Was Founded Continues Through To Today As The Club Is Recognized As One Of The Top 100 Most Prestigious Clubs In America.

The founders of Sleepy Hollow turned to Charles Blair Macdonald, the pre-eminent golf course architect of the time, to build their golf course. Dur-ing the summer of 1911, Macdonald and his engineer, Seth Raynor, sculpted the original 18-hole course out of the hills and trees high on the east bank of the Hudson River. 20 years later, A.W. Tillinghast, another legendary golf architect, expanded the facilities to 27 holes. Recent renovations in 2007 and 2008 by Gil Hanse and George Bahto have restored the original character to all 27 holes. The Upper Course was host to the Senior PGA Tour’s “Com-memorative” from 1986 through 1993. The 2002 US Women’s Amateur Championship was also contested on Sleepy Hollow’s beautiful champion-ship golf course.
