The WTVP Auction is a central Illinois tradition that has been going strong for 45 years. Back when we started airing the auction in the ’70s it was a groovy way to raise money and get the word out about this new sensation called the Public Broadcasting Service, or as it is more simply known today as PBS.Through the decades we have raised thousands of dollars to keep your favorite PBS programming like Sesame Street, NOVA, PBS NewsHour and many more on the airwaves here in central Illinois.

Luann Claudin, Auction Director shares with us that, “It is not only a station event, it is a communi-ty event. We have auction donations and volunteers from Galesburg to Princeton and everywhere in between. People in our community are truly generous and we are grateful each year for support the community shows WTVP.”

We have a dedicated group of new and veteran volunteers that keep this essential fundraising event running smoothly on-camera and behind the scenes. By the time the show airs more than 500 people will have volunteered for the auction. Some volunteers have been apart of the fun since the beginning in 1974, including Mary Jo Grebner. With a bright smile and fun-loving attitude Mary Jo shares that she has held just about every position the auction has to offer, including dressing up as Big Bird while very pregnant.

It’s not to late to help. We are always looking for donations, volunteers and support for this central Illinois tradition. Tune in April 19th-22nd to help support the station and see what we have in store for you this year, and of course, WATCH! BID! & BUY!

Programming Highlights in April! The Child in Time (MASTERPIECE)Sunday, April 1, 8 PM

A moment of distraction triggers a crisis in the lives of a happy, successful British couple in Ian McEwan’s haunting tale of a lost child and redeemed love, starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Kelly Macdon-ald (Boardwalk Empire).

Roads to Memphis (AMERICAN EXPERIENCE)Tuesday, April 3, 7 PM

Witness the fatefully entwined stories of assassin James Earl Ray and his target, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., against the backdrop of the seething and turbulent forces in American society that led these two men to their violent and tragic collision in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. Based on the book by Hampton Sides (Ghost Soldiers), the program relies on eyewitness testimony from King’s inner circle and the officials involved in Ray’s capture and prosecution following an intense two-month international manhunt.

And Still I Rise: Black America Since MLKTuesday – Wednesday, April 3-4, 8 PM

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. looks at the last 50 years of African-American history — from Stokely Carmichael to Barack Obama, James Brown to Beyoncé — charting the remarkable progress made and raising hard questions about the obstacles that remain.

Unforgotten (MASTERPIECE)Sundays, April 8 – May 13, 8 PM

Nicola Walker (Last Tango in Halifax) and Sanjeev Bhaskar (Indian Summers) star as police officers investigat-ing the cold case murder of a boy whose diary implicates four seemingly unconnected couples in a thriller that The Guardian (UK) hailed as “so much more than a satisfying murder mystery.”

will.i.am – Landmarks Live in Concert (GREAT PERFORMANCES)Friday, April 13, 9 PM

Join will.i.am at London’s Royal Albert Hall as he reunites with the Black Eyed Peas for the first time on stage in more than a decade. The fun-filled event captures the Emmy and Grammy-winning artist, writer and produc-er in his “second” hometown.

Stop and wonder about the most provocative and unanswered questions in science!NOVA Wonders premieres April 25 at 8 PM on six consecutive Wednesday nights.Ever wonder what your dog is thinking? About whether there is life on other planets? NOVA Wonders answers these questions and more.

Each week, series hosts Computer scientist Rana el Kaliouby, Mathematician Talithia Williams, and Neuroscientist  André Fenton will take your viewers on a journey to explore how far we’ve come in our quest for answers, and how we’ve managed to get there.Among the series’ intriguing topics are: the secret language of animals; what’s hidden in the human body; artificial intelligence technologies that could surpass the abilities of the human mind; the power to engineer life in a lab; and the mysteries of the universe.

1st Episode of NOVA WONDERS: WHAT ARE ANIMALS SAYING?From singing whales and howling wolves to chirping birds and clicking dolphins, the world is filled with the exotic vocalizations of other creatures. But what are they saying? While we believe language sets us apart, scientists are finally beginning to unravel the codes of animal communication. NOVA Wonders travels around the globe, where researchers are deciphering an amazing array of clues that reveal how animals share information critical to their survival—from a cacophony of ultrasonic bat squeaks to spider thumps and mice mating songs.

The People Behind the WTVP AuctionIt takes hundreds of volunteers to run the WTVP Auction. Some work a few hours during our on-air nights, some work for weeks and months ahead acquiring, collecting and processing merchandise, and some work all year round planning and managing. Every one of our volunteers plays an important part in our success. The Auction is definitely volunteer driven and for that WTVP is extremely grateful. Here we give special recognition to the dedicated leaders of our various Auction committees.
