President’s Message

Hello Members, I thought it might be interesting to share with you my background and leadership style as your RWOP president. In my career, as a Corporate Training and Development Manager, I established training curriculum, designed classes, instructed classes and instructors, created and managed training schedules and budgets for Motorola, Intel and Micron to name a few. My degree is in Business with a minor in Adult Education and Instructional Design. That tells you enough about me... My style of leadership is and has always been participative. What is Participative Leadership? It is a style that invites input from the Board of Directors (BOD) as well as others regarding club events, policies and key decisions. The BOD is given pertinent information regarding issues, we debate

and discuss. Then a majority vote determines the course of action we take. I have impressed upon board members that their votes need to be based on what is best for our organization as that is their responsibility. Why do I believe Participative Leadership is the best way to lead? With input from all and when many ideas are heard we make better decisions. It develops buy-in and teamwork which helps in the implementation of projects and better solutions. Lastly, I believe in giving credit where credit is due. When someone completes a project, offers to help others, goes above and beyond they should be given praise for their efforts and credit for their work. When I see this attribute in our board members, I believe it is a sign of a mature and confident leader. A good leader takes a little more than her share of the blame and a little less than her share of the credit. I hope this has been helpful in understanding your 2017 President's style. No one style is ever used exclusively but there is a tendency towards one versus another. Now that you know my style you also know I welcome your comments and ideas. There will be an Idea Box at each luncheon starting in April...feel free to share what is on your mind! Regards, Linda Nichols

Caring for America

Our April, CARING FOR AMERICA spotlight is Prescott's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 541. Known as the "Bucky O'Neill Post" in honor of

Prescott's famous lawman, mayor and war hero, this is Arizona's oldest VFW post.

This non-profit organization serves local veterans, providing assistance with medical needs, family concerns and homelessness. They offer support to NA Veterans Hospital patients, many of whom have no family to turn to except their fellow veterans. VFW Post 541 also

works to honor military service and promote patriotism, while looking to create more community awareness of veterans' issues.

The Post is aging and requires modernizing - so monetary donations are much appreciated. Checks can be made out to: "VFW Post 541". You may also consider helping another way: On May 6, 2017 VFW Post 541 will be holding their 6th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser at Antelope Hills, and raffle prizes are needed: Golf balls $ Golf gloves $ Golf towels $ Gift cards to Antelope Hills You can also join in the fun by signing up with your friends to play in the tournament! Or, sponsor a hole for $125. (All donations go to The Post Building Fund and the VA Alzheimer ward and are fully tax-deductible.) Come to the CFA table for more information about VFW Post 541, the Golf Tournament Fundraiser, and how you can help support local veterans. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

United States Congressman, Dr. Paul Gosar - Chairman of the Western Caucus In November 2016, Representative Paul Gosar (AZ-R) was elected Chairman of the Western Caucus. "I am honored to have earned the confidence of my colleagues to lead the Western Caucus. Having lived in the west all my life I am very familiar with the pertinent issues. Westerners desperately need allies in Congress that fight on their behalf. The Western Caucus deserves bold leadership that empowers its members to take real action and enact practical solutions. The future is bright for western communities..." According to its website, the mission of the Western Caucus is to "enhance, sustain and preserve the west's dynamic and unique culture, and to find innovative solutions that address the distinctive concerns facing western and rural communities. We believe economic growth and conservation are not mutually exclusive goals and can be accomplished by promoting balanced, common sense reforms." To accomplish this mission the Western Caucus is committed to advancing the following key principles: protecting private property, strengthening local control, promoting economic growth and increasing energy independence along with supporting other issues important to rural communities.

Since being elected to Congress in 2010, the Congressman has focused his legislative work on natural resources issues and government accountability. Both areas stem from his work on the House Committee on natural resources and the House Committee on government reforms. He currently serves as Chairman of the Natural Resources Energy and Minerals Subcommittee and Vice-Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Interior Subcommittee. Arizona has a great U.S. Congressman in Dr. Paul Gosar who fights for accountability for our western values.

Americanism - Pam Jones

American Ingenuity in Action

On April 3, 1860, three entrepreneurs unveiled the solution to a problem that was hobbling America's expansion. The Pony Express set out to accomplish what most thought was impossible - providing fast, reliable mail service between St. Joseph, Missouri and California. Rather than taking weeks, news and letters would be delivered 2,000 miles in only 10-days time. Since speed was everything, the 'Express' riders were young, strong, and small. By choosing only riders who weighed less than 125 pounds, the amount of mail carried by each steed was maximized. A single horseman would ride between the way stations at 'breakneck' speed, switching mounts every 10 to 15 miles and handing his mail to a new courier after 75-100 miles. The record was set when Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address was delivered from Missouri to California in just 7 days, 17 hours. Despite being a sacred part of western history, the Pony Express only operated for 18-months, being replaced by the completion of the transcontinental telegraph system. When the trail dust settled, the Pony Express had successfully delivered some 35,000 pieces of mail and traveled more than 500,000 miles across the American West. Combining the tools available at the time, with the grit and can do attitude of its riders, the Pony Express filled an important need in our nation's history until the telegraph could link our great nation. Making the impossible possible - that is why America is Exceptional!
