17 This is what the Lord God says: As for you,my flock, I will judge between one sheep and an-

other, between the male sheep and the male goats.

18 Is it not enough for you to eat grass in the good

land? Must you crush the rest of the grass with

your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear

water? Must you make the rest of the water muddy

with your feet? Ezekiel 34:17-18 (NCV)

    PASTORS PIECE

LIVING EASTER"I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes

in me will live, even though he dies; and whoeverlives and believes in me will never die. Do you be-lieve this?" John 11:25, responding to Martha, hisfriend.

Lazarus died. Jesus hadn't hurried to his bedsidewhen informed of his illness, and Lazarus had died.

In hot countries it was necessary to wrap the de-ceased quickly and entomb them, because of howquickly decomposition would set in. But even thenwhen Jesus arrived there was hope. Martha andMary knew and loved Jesus. Others in Jerusalemhad gathered to grieve with the sisters and pay hom-age to their fallen neighbor, Lazarus.

When Jesus heard the details of the death of hisfriend, he wept. Then he began to walk.

There were many witnesses. Jesus went to thetomb, followed by a throng of naysayers and curiouswhisperers, wails of sorrow and hope for...what could

he do? He walked toward the grave and requestedthat the stone be rolled away. Always practical, Mar-tha reminded the Lord that there would be an odor, then had the stone rolled away, as requested. Jesusprayed aloud for the witnesses' sake and told Laza-rus to come out. Lazarus was four days in the grave, yet heard the voice of Jesus, and obeyed.

He was restored to complete his life on earth, res-cued from the tomb, as Jesus continued walking to-ward his own.

Welcomed with victorious joy in the waving of palmbranches and shouts of acclamation, Jesus contin-

ued his journey to the cross via similar humble trans-portation that had provided for his special deliverythree decades or so earlier in Bethlehem.

Each year at spring's birth we glimpse Jesus' pas-sion--his unimaginable suffering, as we think of thecross and Jesus upon it. We think of the miracle ofthe raising of Lazarus that was catalyst to the cross.

It will be a very nice way to fin-ish off a special day for Mothers, and a specialtreat for members at our local UCC churches. The host church, Bethel UCC, will provide anevening meal for the Choir when it arrives thatevening around 5:00 PM, and the Concert willfollow at 7:00 PM. The Choir needs accommoda-tions for that Sunday night after the concert. TheChoir members just need a place to sleep inpairs, breakfast on Monday morning, and re-turned to the church.

Dear UCC Pastors,Per a recent phone call from the Choir Director,we are looking at providing accommodations for25-30 students in pairs. That computes to 12-15

people willing to provide housing. Shirley and Iwill house three students. If we pull together, Iknow we can do this to help this Choir on its wayto Colorado. Please consider and get back toKaren Aitkens or me if you have people who arewilling to help. Thanks, Bob Atkinson, St. Lukes

Mission4/1 Earth1. What is Mission 4/1 Earth?ONE UNITED CHURCH on ashared resurrection witness forPlanet Earth during 50 great daysof greening up, powering down, and shouting out for the environment! Mission4/1 Earth: 50 Great Days is about boldly livingJesus let-your-light-shine proclamation in theSermon on the Mount: That they may see yourgood works! It is an opportunity to live out ourfaith in unity, as one church for the sake ofour fragile planet Earth.2. When is Mission 4/1 Earth?Mission 4/1 Earth launches Easter Monday, April1, 2013, and continues through Pentecost, May19, 2013 the 50 days of Eastertide.

How wonderful it is that nobody need

wait a single moment before starting to

improve the world. ~ Anne Frank

    3. What are the goals of Mission 4/1 Earth? There are three goals:

    A. Collectively offer more than ONE MILLIONHOURS of engaged earth care, includingclean up, advocacy, education, and behavioralchanges that will impact the environment.

    B. Collectively plant more than 100,000TREES locally and globally in partnership withthe National Arbor Day Foundation and theUCCs denominational partners around theworld.C. Collectively write/send more than 100,000

ADVOCACY LETTERS on environmental con-cerns to elected officials and local and nationalnewspapers.

How will Zion UCC embrace Mission 41 Earth?

    NO EXCUSES - PLANT A

TREE!With all the Mission 4/1 Earthtree planting options, each oneof us can be responsible forplanting one tree, in our coun-try or around the world. Here'show.Planting trees in the UnitedStates is possible through apartnership with the Arbor Day

Foundation, by purchasing Give-A-Tree cards, which note that trees will be planted by the U.S.

Forest service in a national forest. Participants inMission 4/1 Earth can also buy trees through the

Arbor Day Foundation that will be sent to them forplanting. The United Church of Christ has been working forenvironmental justice for almost 30 years, andhopes Mission 4/1 Earth provides an opportunityfor a shared mission campaign to live out our faith in unity, as one church for the sake of ourfragile planet.

The LamplighterRev. Talitha Arnold, senior pastor of the UnitedChurch of Santa Fe UCC. In such an environmentallyunique area, she says adaptation is key. "One thingabout the Southwest is you have to get over the colorgreen," Arnold said. "You have to see the beauty inbrowns and reds, gold and yellow and not try to rec-reate where you came from. Green-grass lawns andgolf courses are not sustainable lifestyles here."

A recent group conversation debated the differencebetween advocacy that simply requires time or effort, like volunteering, and environmental advocacy thatrequires conscious behavioral changes, like bringingreusable bags to the grocery store. Arnold noticedthat these behavioral changes can be difficult, evenfor people who are engaged and aware."It's one thing to volunteer at a homeless shelter,"said Arnold. "It's a whole other thing to make lifestylechanges."

But Arnold is optimistic about the future, as shesees more congregations and individuals starting to

do their part. She thinks Mission 4/1 Earth is a greatstep in the right direction, with the UCC and the faithcommunity being a leader of this important cause.

    EXPRESSION SESSION

There is no more lovely, friendly or charming rela-

tionship, communion or company, than a goodmarriage. ~ Martin Luther

will come again, and receive you unto my-self; that where I am, there ye may be also.John 14:3 (KJV)

The Image of GriefI am a tree, standing alone in the earlywinter. I feel cold, empty, gray and ugly.

The winds of grief have ripped away a

branch and have left me unbalanced

with a great gaping hole. The sap of my

innermost being rushes to the open

wound. The icy cold rain of my weeping

falls through my shaking boughs. I con-tinue to sway in the harsh gales of reality,

and the keening of the winds is the voice

    of my broken heart.

But under the ground there is life. Each

root of love, friendship, caring, family and

faith is feeding into the trunk, and I know

surely spring will come again! The bark of

time will cover the wound. The scar willalways be there, but gradually the drain

on my heart will cease. The leaves will

burst forth and gently surround the

wound with breezes of living memories

and promises of life to come. My boughs

will be heavy with wonder of living, nes-

tled near the scarred trunk, secure in the

knowledge that God is my refuge andstrength, and the sweet bird of happiness

    will sing again.
