As they en- tered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, be- cause they were afraid. (Mark 16:1-8) Our lives are full of great stones which need to be rolled away. But sometimes we seem content just to let them stay put. We each have pockets of darkness within our souls which we avoid facing and sometimes ignore even when they are crying out from the depths. This is human nature, and we as God’s creatures are drawn away from the deep caves of human nature into green val- leys and powerful hills of grace. Jesus told his disciples what was going to happen, yet they avoided and ignoredit was too horrific to imag- ine. Three days passed, seemingly a lifetime without Je- sus, and there was anticipation in faith of what needed to be done next. This was custom. Ritual must be followed. PASTOR’S PEACE

When the Sabbath was over,

Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they en-tered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, be-cause they were afraid. (Mark 16:1-8)

Our lives are full of great stones which need to be rolled away. But sometimes we seem content just to let them stay put. We each have pockets of darkness within our souls which we avoid facing and sometimes ignore even when they are crying out from the depths. This is human nature, and we as God’s creatures are drawn away from the deep caves of human nature into green val-leys and powerful hills of grace.

Jesus told his disciples what was going to happen, yet they avoided and ignored—it was too horrific to imag-ine. Three days passed, seemingly a lifetime without Je-sus, and there was anticipation in faith of what needed to be done next. This was custom. Ritual must be followed. Who would roll away the great stone?

And here, as the women went to the tomb to anoint the body and try to begin their lives without their Master, they were reminded, “He is going ahead of you into Gali-lee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” The stone had been rolled away; Jesus was yet again going ahead of them to prepare the way.

The Lamplighter Each year we celebrate that the stone has been rolled away and the tomb is empty. Jesus is risen and has gone ahead of us—all we need to do is to follow and we will be shown the way. Acts 15:11 reminds us that we believe we are saved through the grace of our Lord Jesus, yet we often act as if this grace is dependent upon what we do. There is nothing we can do to achieve grace, yet only to allow our own stones of fear and hesitation to be rolled away, in faith that indeed our Master has gone ahead of us for us.

We often need to be reminded and that is okay. And what now will we do with this new life that bursts forth with the fragrance of spring? Christ is risen, hallelujah!

Annual MMSUCC Women's Retreat The Annual Women's Retreat will be held on May 1-3, 2015, at our own Camp MoVal. This year's theme is "Under the Shelter of God's Wings".

THANKS, EVERYBODY. WE'RE IN THE BLACK! The end of the year financial report for the Mis-souri Mid-South Conference, including the report of Conference operations as well as the opera-tions of our two outdoor ministries for the year, is now completed, and the news is as good as we could have hoped for. All of our endeavors have ended the year with a positive balance. This good news is, of course, partly due to budgetary econo-mies, but could not have been accomplished with-out faithful stewardship among our congregations. We thank every church that increased OCWM giv-ing in 2014 and every church that made sacrificial decisions to support the work we do together. We are hopeful that this faithful trend in our united ministry will continue with growing commitment in the months to come. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastise-ment that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. EXPRESSION SESSION Dear Friends at Zion in Mayview,

I write this letter not only as your former pastor,

but also now as the nominee for the next Gen-

eral Minister and Presi-

dent. I have not gotten

used to writing that, yet.

I won't take long, but I

had to write to you all and

say a few things.

One, thank you. What you taught me about

how to be a pastor changed me, and made me

the person and pastor I am today. Your constant

love and grace, your joy at even the simple

things, your enduring faith through the hard

times, your deep commitment to mission gave

me a picture of what the church can be at its

best.

Two, I will carry that with me when I take my

ministry now to Cleveland to lead this denomina-

tion. Your imprint is all over what I do and who I

am. Thank you. I could not be where I am today

without all of you. You are deeply imbedded in

my heart, and I smile every time I remember you.

I just wanted you to know how grateful I am to

you. When I stand before Synod to face election

in June, I will be holding you all in my heart. It

can be no other way. The world will soon know

of the light that shines on the hill in Mayview, and

of your capacity to bring the gospel to those who

most need it.

Mimi also sends her love. We will be grandpar-

ents in about three weeks. John and Kelley will

soon present their son, Jacob Ellar, to the world.

We will have to bring him back some day to

show him where his father, John Jacob, first

learned of the love of God.

With all sincerity, I write with a joyous and

grateful heart. Thank you.

In Christ's name,

The Rev. Dr. John C. Dorhauer

Southwest Conference Minister and

Nominee for General Minister and President of

the United Church of Christ

Ps, if this is read in the first five minutes of service,

someone share it with Carl and Helen when they fi-

nally decide to show up. And make sure they don't

drive home and leave one of their grandkids sitting on

the front porch of the parsonage.

Thank You’s I would just like to say "Thank you" to all who took the time to cook and prepare the meal for our family following Tom's funeral. I am for-ever grateful for each and everyone! Sharon

During a time like this we realize how much our friends and relatives really mean to us............Your expression of sympathy will al-ways be remembered. The Begemann Family Dear Zion Family, Thank you so much for all the cards and phone calls for our 65th wedding anniversary! They are much appreciated! Wilbur and Detta Neher The family of Samuel Mason Burroughs would like to thank friends, family and the commu-nity for the many prayers, calls, visits and sup-port as we welcomed our precious baby into this world. God is working miracles with Sam-uel, and we thank you for continued prayers. David & Sammi Burroughs Jeff, Connie and Tyler Sanders

Easter: Resurrection as a

Spiritual Practice

On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the res-urrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, an event many consider to be the centerpiece of their faith. But Easter is more than just a day. What happens when we think of it as a verb? Then the resurrec-tion becomes a spiritual practice in daily life. Megan McKenna, the prolific and profound Catholic writer, saw it this way when she was leading a Bible study. She shares the following vignette in her book Not Counting Women and Children: Neglected Stories from the Bible. “Once in a parish mission when I was studying this scripture (Luke 7: 11-17) with a large group, someone called out harshly, ‘Have you ever brought someone back from the dead?’ I had been saying that life happens when we are inter-

with graciousness, you are participating in a new world of hospitality. • Your work for justice, freedom, and equality sets the stage for resurrection. When you feed the hungry and stand up for the oppressed, you are a life-giver. • Your little acts of kindness tenderize the world, add to

the fund of good will, and set the table for resurrection. • Love God, love your neighbor, and love your new life as marks of the resurrec-tion. • Nurture yourself — eat right, exercise, get plenty of rest — and you are helping God resurrect your body. • When you stay open to all people and situations, you affirm your belief that all things can be made new. • Every peace treaty that you sign with someone who is your enemy or oppo-nent is a sign of resurrection. • Sometimes you feel refreshed by the simplest things — laughter, games, play. This, too, is resurrection. • Other times it is the thrill of the quest that spurs you on to be all you were meant to be as a person reborn. • When you practice reverence for life, you can’t help but notice all the little res-urrections going on all around you, the continual process of creation on Earth.

• Find a place where you can regularly practice silence; it will rejuvenate your soul. • Welcome changes — big and small — in your experi-ence and signal your receptivity to transformation and resurrection. • Pay attention to visions and visionaries as likely con-duits of resurrection for yourself and your community. • Every time you bring to life another’s sense of wonder and affirm that you are all standing on holy ground, you practice resurrection. • By respecting the mystery of God, human nature, and the natural world, you bear witness to the ineffable na-ture of renewal and rebirth. • By accepting your identity as a child of God and your mission as a copartner with the Holy One in the unfolding drama of the universe, you embody the resurrection prin-ciple. • Practice resurrection with zeal. Be aroused by life and cherish every moment as a gift from the One Who Re-news us day by day. Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat http://www.patheos.com/blogs/dailylifeasspiritualpractice/2013/03/easter-resurrection-as-a-

spiritual-practice/#ixzz3Ux78jEK7

The Lamplighter rupted, and that some of the most powerful acts of resurrection happen to the least likely people; that we are the people of resurrection and hope, called to live passionately and compassionately with oth-ers, to defy death, to forgive, and to bring others back into the community, to do something that is life-giving, that fights death and needless suffer-ing. And then this chal-lenge from the back of the church. “My response was ‘Yes.’ I went on to say, ‘Every time I bring hope into a situation, every time I bring joy that shatters despair, every time I for-give others and give them back dignity and the possibility of a future with me and others in the community, every time I listen to others and affirm them and their life, every time I speak the truth in public, every time I confront in-justice — yes — I bring people back from the dead.’ ” Let’s identify some ways we can practice resurrection in our daily lives. • Walk the path of beauty and notice the spiritual radiance in people, places, and growing things — more signs of rebirth. • Leave the past to God’s mercy. Leave the future to God’s discretion. Living in the present moment, the only time when God brings forth new life, is a way of affirming your belief in resurrection. • Whenever you with compassion open your heart, mind, and soul to the pain of the world, you help bring suffering beings back into the land of the liv-ing. • Enthusiasm is the mark of a life-giver. When you can laugh and sing and relish life, you are practic-ing resurrection. • Faith enables us to live with confidence amidst doubt and paradox. When you can trust in your relationship with God, all kinds of leaps and re-births are possible. • Practice gratitude and you are slaying the death-dealing forces of boredom, despair, and taking-things-for granted. • When you can welcome guests and alien ideas
