WHY SHOULD I TAKE AP EXAMS?

1. All student enrolled in an AP course must take an AP exam.

2. Taking the exam lets you know how well you did compared to students all over the country.

3. Taking the exam is excellent preparation for what you will encounter when taking exams in college.

4. Taking the exam gives you a sense of accomplishment – you worked hard all year and you can see that it

paid off when you take the exam! Accepting this personal challenge shows your willingness to push

yourself and emphasizes your commitment to academic excellence.

5. Taking the exam can earn you college credit. Most universities accept exam scores of 3, 4, or 5 for

credit.

6. Earning credit now provides potential savings and allows you to take advantage of available courses at

university, potentially leading to the ability to double major, pursue an internship, travel abroad, or take

a course to fulfill an interest.

7. Those who take AP exams are exempt from a final exam in those courses. There will be some sort of

culminating activity due after the exam period and before school ends, but you will not have to sit for a

formal final exam. Those who do not take AP exams will have to take a final exam and will also be

responsible for any culminating activity that the students who took the AP exams are completing, as

well as continuing work in class in preparation for the final exams.

8. The workload for those students who take AP exams is considerably lighter after the exam period is

over. The workload for students who do not take AP exams remains constant until final exams. (See

above.)

Pg. 10

AP Testing - Information & Schedule

AP Exam registration materials will be distributed to students in their AP classes on 3/5/2012-3/9-2012.

All exam procedures and expectations will be outlined during this distribution of materials visit.

Regular registration for AP Exams will be from 3/5 – 3/30. During this time you can bring completed registration form and payment in order to register for your AP exam.

Fee Waivers: The cost of AP exams should never be a reason for a student to not take an exam. Assistance is available to families with financial need. Fee waiver applications will be automatically approved for full fee waivers upon receipt for families who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Families who do not qualify for free or reduced lunch may still qualify for fee waivers. Income qualification grids at the bottom of the fee waiver application clarify qualification limits for full fee waivers.

Families who do not qualify for full fee waivers but for whom AP exam fees will constitute a financial hardship may qualify for a fee reduction. Students needing to consider an application for a hardship consideration should go to the Counseling Office and see Mr. Saltzman (email: [email protected] with any questions prior to the 3/30 registration deadline. Conversations about financial hardships will be kept confidential.

Students who apply for fee waivers/hardship considerations are still expected to register for exams by the 3/30 deadline or incur late fees.

AP Tests will be given primarily at the North Creek Community Center spanning the dates of May 2- May 17. AP Spanish Language will be testing at WMHS in labs b118/b120. The length of AP tests varies by subject. Exams take approximately 3 hours of ACTUAL TESTING TIME. Adding one 10 minute break between sections and the time to distribute, collect and count materials the morning AP exams usually end around 11:30 with the afternoon exams ending around 3:30. Students must make arrangements for transportation to and from AP exams, both on campus and off site at the North Creek Community Center. Students taking the afternoon exams will DEFINITELY NOT BE FINISHED IN TIME TO RIDE THE AFTERNOON SCHOOL BUS.

Attached is a copy of the Testing Schedule/Locations grid, including both test times and locations. Students who are not taking AP courses but wish to register for AP exams should direct questions to Mr. Feamster in C121. (email: [email protected])

Students should get a good night’s rest before the tests, and eat a nutritious breakfast. The testing schedule is attached, as well as other information about AP exams.

Attached are the Attendance Procedures during the AP exams.

Attached is information about the advantages of participation in the AP Examination Process.

Attendance Procedures for AP/IB Exams

1. Students who take an AP exams on any given day are excused from all regular

classes here at Watkins Mill on that day. The attendance office will be notified of the

excused absence(s) of students taking the exams. Students who are involved in an AP

exam will be marked PRESENT for school records.

2. If a student becomes ill and cannot attend an exam s/he should call the WMHS

attendance office to report the illness. Additionally, any student who becomes unable

to attend a scheduled AP exam MUST CALL Mr. Feamster at 240-745-5071 or Ms.

Walker at 301-840-3970 in the WMHS Counseling Center by 7:00 am.

3. If students are in the building during instructional hours on a day for which they are

scheduled for an AP exam, they will be expected to attend classes. Students MAY NOT

simply plan to spend the day in the Media Center studying. Anyone planning to miss

classes to prepare for an AM/PM exam must plan to do so off campus, and be assured of

reliable transportation to and from the exam session, whether on or off campus.

4. Reporting times and anticipated dismissal times for AP examsis listed on the AP Testing

Schedule.

5. Students should not ask to leave early if they finish before the end of the test, as

their requests will be denied. Students, who play a sport or have a job, are responsible

for informing coaches or employers of AP obligations and making arrangements

accordingly.

6. Exams may run longer than STEP; however, if that is the case a box lunch option may be

available for those students who qualify for free and reduced meals. Students may choose

to bring a lunch as well on AP exam days.
