“How & Why” - A Trunk Show with Nancy Ota

We have all seen how Nancy Ota can organize a

new quilt guild and make it a success in just a

year - now we have an opportunity to admire her

very wonderful sewing skills. Nancy will share

over 30 items that she has made since becoming

a quilter in 1988. Many of these quilts, wall hang-

ings, garments and bags have been published in

books and magazines and have been finalists and

won ribbons in major shows in Paducah, Houston,

Santa Clara, Ontario and Japan. In April, 2006,

her wall hanging ―Infinity‖ won Best Wall Hanging

from the American Quilters Society and is now

owned by the Museum of American Quilters Soci-

ety in Paducah, Kentucky. She will bring with her

a near duplicate of that quilt.

Giving credit to the many wonderful artists and

teachers from whom she has received inspiration

and instruction, Nancy will talk about the different

techniques she uses to create her work using commercial cottons, hand dyed cottons and

silks from neckties and kimono.

Purses have been a major interest, and after many requests, Nancy began designing and

selling patterns. The Japanese embroidery technique of sashiko has also piqued her

interest, and now she has several wall hanging designs using sashiko. Her patterns are

sold in quilt shops and on her website. www.nancyota.com

Sewing, whether by machine or hand, has been her creative outlet since childhood when

her mother shared her joy of sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidering. Nancy began

quilting by making gifts for family members. She took her first class in 1988 with teacher Suzanne Stanton at Adult Education in San Juan Capistrano. Due to Suzanne‘s enthusi-asm and expertise, quilting became an addiction. Nancy feels that the many activities offered by quilt guilds, taking workshops and viewing quilts at shows and in publications

keep her mind spinning and fingers stitching.

A supportive husband and two grown kids with spouse continue to encourage her and help her learn computer and photography skills. She works as a dental hygienist, gives trunk shows, teaches, actively participates in the local quilt guilds, and creates and sells

patterns for quilters. She feels great pleasure in seeing her patterns used creatively.

SEW IT SEAMS

We are headed into the colorful season of Autumn when the

leaves on the trees turn beautiful hues of golden yellow,

pumpkin orange and apple red. While we may not have the

number of deciduous trees that you find in the Northern

climes of California and the rest of the USA, you can still find

displays of color in South Orange County. Downtown San

Juan Capistrano provides a perfect example of Autumn in all

its glory! It is my favorite spot for a walk to view Fall foliage.

Speaking of color, our upcoming November Fest Fundraiser

on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 proves to be a colorful

event. Open to all members and guests, the November Fest

will include raffle gift baskets, a live auction of quilts and a delicious brunch. Get a jump start on your holiday

shopping by joining us and participating in this fundraiser. Please see Nancy Ota‘s article in this newsletter

about ways that you can volunteer or donate items to make this event the best yet! We need your support!

INTRODUCING:

Most of you know Joann Bishop as First Vice President, Programs, for our guild. It‘s fun to learn how people become interested in quilting. For her, it was a group of friends from the 1970s who

together took a sampler quilt class. They had a very strict quilting teacher, and the students had to return each week with each block correctly finished. The friends encouraged one another to learn the techniques and finish the quilt - king-sized, pieced on an old Ken-more sewing machine, and hand quilted.

Joann enjoys traditional-style quilts, appliqué, and hand stitchery, and she‘s made many large quilts. These days she enjoys sewing smaller projects, such as miniature quilts and wall hangings, and she‘s a member of "Mini Maniacs" and ―Seamz Rite‖ friendship groups.

Born in northern Minnesota, Joann moved to California in 1950. She met her husband in high school, and they married in college - 48 years ago. Joann had to put quilting on hold while pursuing a 20-year real estate career, but upon retiring, she joined a redwork group at Leah's in Orange, where she met avid quilters and joined a

guild. Currently, she‘s working to improve her machine quilting skills, especially feather quilting.

Joann and her husband moved to Dana Point five years ago. She volunteers at the Dana Point Library Friends‘ bookstore, she enjoys the "Lit Ladies" book discussion group, and she‘s a ―Gardening Angel‖ at San Juan Capistrano Mission. She and her husband love living at the beach and enjoy walking the headlands and the harbor. They have two wonderful children living nearby and three grandchildren who keep them busy. Be sure to introduce yourself to this friendly, happy quilter!

San Clemente Presbyterian Church Marine Wives‟ Baby Shower

Volunteers at San Clemente Presbyterian Church (SCPC) will hold its semi-annual baby shower event for moms to be or recent moms of Marine families of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion (1CEB), based at Camp Pendle-ton. The twice a year event will take place in October.

San Clemente Presbyterian Church adopted the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion 6 years ago to show its apprecia-tion for the sacrifices they are making in service to our country. In addition to the baby shower event, the church holds an annual 4th of July barbecue and fireworks party on the church patio, a Thanksgiving feast for the battal-ion, and delivers welcome home gift bags to each Marine returning from war zones. They also help furnish homes for their junior enlisted families and are available for the Marines and their families as other needs arise.

Baby shower planners are asking the community for donations of new baby clothing, blankets and gently used baby equipment.

The Marine shower consists of a lovely luncheon, typical baby shower games and SCPC presents each mom with a complete layette, as well as at least two large items, such as a high chair, stroller, car seat, swing bouncer or play pen.

Our goal is to let these young families know we are praying for them and that we appreciate the sacrifice they are making to help keep our country free.

NOVEMBER FEST Here is the opportunity to get to know your fellow members and use your creative side. Join us in making our November Fest a special fundraiser. You will make new friends while helping your great guild.

Volunteers are needed to help with collections from businesses and members,

wrapping baskets, basket pick up and delivery, food donations, cooking and baking, food preparation, table monitors, opportunity basket runners, set up and clean up. Please contact Mary Gorelick if you wish to help.

fund their programs. All of the quilts are 12‖X12‖, which seems to be the most popular size for this type of fundraising. It is a very worthwhile or-ganization with memberships for both professional artists and non-professionals. The auction offers a chance to purchase a wonderful quilt by an unknown quilt artist or one made by one of the ―big names‖ of to-day‘s quilting community. money goes toward all the guild expenses.

The magazine table seems to be the most popular spot in the

room every month.

quilt she started in a workshop with Patricia Lei Murray

in Aug ‗06. The organza is on top of the pattern and the

Original design - painted, pieced and quilted by Nancy Ota

Begun in a Surfside workshop with teacher, Susan Trindle,

Nancy first painted the sunflower on white cotton sateen with

Tsukineko ink, then bordered and machine quilted this piece..

Nancy's original drawing was influenced by sunflower posters

found on the Internet; she made several paintings from the

same drawing and later two into wall quilts.

Nancy began quilting in earnest after taking Adult Ed classes

in 1988 with Suzanne Stanton. She loves taking workshops

and learning different techniques. She enjoys dabbling with

many processes, but has never found the one "style" she can

Ardie Chamness made this 30‖ X 60‖ quilt for Zack Collie,

a friend and wrestling teammate of her grandson. Zack

became a paraplegic on Memorial Day after a swimming

accident at Newport Beach. The Mustang horse in the

center is the mascot for Yorba Linda High where Zack will

be a sophomore this fall. Ardie planned to finish the quilt

after the meeting in time for Zack‘s 16th birthday.

BRING THESE THINGS FOR PHILANTHROPHY ...........

Wanted - any spools of thread, any color. The Boys and Girls Club does most of the quilting by hand with double thread and they use a lot of thread. Anything is appreciated. We continue with our monthly food drive, so remember to bring canned and boxed goods to the guild meeting, as well as travel and sample-size Items.

Also, please donate baby clothing, blankets and gently used baby equipment for Marine wives‘ baby

shower to be held by the San Clemente Presbyterian Church in October. [See article on Page 5]

Monday, September 27 from 10 to 4, Stashbusters will meet at A Time To Sew. This month we‘ll

be learning to sew blocks with a quilt-as-you-go technique. Save your batting scraps for this pro-

ject! We‘ll each make blocks with the goal of completing at least one quilt by the end of the day.

Bring your sewing machine, notions, and a salad ingredient. The fabric for the project will be

provided by Philanthropy‘s stash.

Got fleece? Stashbusters will be collecting polar fleece fabric for holiday projects at the Septem-

ber guild meeting. Please drop off fleece donations to the Philanthropy table.

We continue to collect canned and boxed food donations, along with travel and sample sized

toiletries. These will be given to the San Clemente Presbyterian church to be given to local food banks.

The goal of the Quilt Faire is to showcase the talent of local quilters and the art of quilting in its contemporary forms. The Bowers' Quilt Faire will provide a place for the sale of quilts and other related materials, demon-

strations by the artists, and hands-on projects for both beginner and experienced skill levels. The Bowers Mu-seum has always been committed to the preservation and display of historic quilts as illustrated by their exhi-

bitions, Quilts: Two Centuries of American Tradition and Technique now running through Jan 16, 2011.

In addition to the Quilt Faire, the Bowers Museum will also host two related events. The first is a lecture on Saturday, November 13, 2010 entitled Keepin' 'Em in Stitches: America's Funniest Quilts presented by Julie Silber, quilt curator and historian. Silber will share images and real-life experiences of some very funny 19th

and 20th century quilts. On the following day, Sunday, November 14, 2010 they will present the film Hearts & Hands: 19th Century Women and their Quilts which highlights the significance of women and their textiles

through the major historic events of the 19th century, including the Civil War and Westward Expansion.

SURFSIDE UFO MORNINGS The Surfside UFO Mornings take place on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 10am to 1pm and are held at At Time to Sew, 27071 Cabot Rd., Suite 101, Laguna Hills. Everyone is welcome to bring a UFO along with whatever equipment you need to work on your project and your own lunch.

The next meeting is September 22nd Bring your UFO and equipment - Jan Hirth will be there to give whatever help you need.

The October 27th meeting has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict.

The November 24th meeting will be a basting party – you can bring a quilt to baste or just come and help others baste their quilts. It can be needle/thread basting or safety pin basting. Sharon Whelan will be there to get things moving.

The December 22nd meeting will be a time to ―finish that holiday gift‖ or whip up something for a holiday stocking. Again, Sharon will be helping where help is needed.

Lyn McQuerry shows ―Summer Happiness‖. This is a

variation of the pattern Broken Dishes made with sum-

mer colors and reproduction 30s fabrics. She used but-

tons on the edge, which she liked when she saw them in

Mary Mashuta‘s quilt books.

Sharon Whelan shows ―Frog‘s Leap‖ an opportunity

quilt made by Michelle Howe to benefit the Leukemia

and Lymphoma Society. Sharon‘s name was drawn

as the winner at the August meeting of Flying Geese

Quilters Guild.

LeAnn Goettel shows a quilt she made for her great-

niece whom she was blessed to have named after

her. When LeAnn saw the pattern & kit from Quilt

Soup she knew it would be the perfect quilt for Ellie.

. Directions for Assembly Leaves:

1. To make the 28 half square triangles: With a pencil, draw a diagonal line (corner to corner) on the wrong side of each of the 14 light green 3‖ squares. With right sides together, layer the light on top of the dark green square and stitch ¼‖ seam on BOTH SIDES of the drawn line. Cut along drawn line and press seam allowances towards the darker fabric. Trim to 2‖ squares.

Trunk:

1. Use the pattern provided (on page 16 in Sep ‗10 newsletter) to paper piece the tree trunk square. NOTE: Measure your pattern. It should be 6 ½‖ square. Not all printers print accurately, extend or shrink the lines as needed.

Block: 1. Using the diagram above, or the picture, assemble the tree. 2. Using the large triangles, finish the block so that the tree is on point. 3. Embellish.

Options

1. The tree leaves can be made scrappy. This variation is shown in the picture. 2. Add family names across the leaves. 3. Use symbols, trinkets or miniature photos for family members. 4. Let your tree represent life in the forest. What birds or insects would
