Smilby, Francis Wilford-Smith (1927-2009), was one of the most successful cartoonists and advertising artists of his day, with a career that spanned nearly half a century. Smilby (a combination of his and his wife’s surnames) was best known for his contribution to Punch and his extensive colour work for Playboy magazine from 1960 producing more than 350 full-page colour cartoons.

After the war, he attended Camberwell School of Art in London and shortly after finishing his degree he was awarded a £100 Punch scholarship in 1951 and his career as a cartoonist began. The collection includes cartoons from the 1950s to the late 1990s. Among them works which appeared in Playboy as well as Punch, Men Only, Housewife, Lilliput, Sketch, New Yorker and Diners Club, including many international editions. He often sent the same design to different magazines and sometimes they seem to have been used more than once.

Smilby was one of a kind-a commercial artist who was friends with many fellow artists and married to one. He collected some of their works, dust jacket designs and books by fellow artists, among them works by Vargas (signed by the artist to ‘Smithy’ as Smilby was known among his friends).

He was, however, also a collector of art, books and cars (and racing the latter in his past time); a huge Sherlock fan; a keen gardener and home renovator, but also a leading authority on blues and gospel music who owned one of the world’s most important collections of early 78 rpm recorded piano blues, and who was twice nominated for Sony Awards.

His cartoons have been exhibited in galleries around the world and we are delighted to be selling a small part of his private collection of original artwork in this sale.
