For the Antioch Chamber of Commerce,2011 began as a year of tough challenges,tough decisions and tough times. Buttough times can show you what you aremade of and can often bring out strengths

you might not have realized you had. This was thecase for the Chamber because 2011 ended up beinga year filled with good times, amazing volunteers,talented leadership and a much needed resetting ofdirection. It was not a time for business as usual, andso, the Board of Directors set on a journey to rebuildand rethink everything about the Chamber. I must take a moment to recognize some key peoplewho gave their time, energy and passion for theChamber to get us to where we are today. Dr. SeanWright, as the 2011 Chairman, set the vision andsuccessfully led the Chamber through the roughtimes and spent countless hours rebuildingrelationships and running day-to-day operations.Martha Goralka consistently volunteered in the office.Jack Monroe must have been born with the AntiochChamber in his DNA. He has a love for the Chamberthat is unmatched and brings in new members!

Brian Bellante of Auto Diagnostic and Repair will takethe helm in 2013 as the Chairman. Brian and I arealigned and share the vision for the future of theAntioch Chamber. Noted as the “Gateway to the Delta,”Antioch is a natural recreationdestination. The city sits at theconfluence of the San Joaquin andSacramento rivers, making Antioch a

Housed in the former Riverview HighSchool (the first high school constructed in the county),the museum is highlighted by an extensive collection oflocal historic artifacts and the distinct Sports Legends Hallof Fame museum, which preserves the athleticachievements of community members. The site is a pieceof history in and of itself, and it’s listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places.

Antioch is also home to the Mangini Agricultural Museum,located on the county fairgrounds. Among the attractionsfound in the museum are historic farming equipment,antique wagons and carriages, a restored fire engine, ablacksmith shop and a country kitchen. Visitors are alsoinvited to participate in various educational programscentered on agriculture, food, nutrition and theenvironment.

Instilling a sense of lifelong learning isparamount to residents of Antioch – and with ahost of educational outlets available in town,community members of all ages andbackgrounds have what they need to be

successful inside and outside of the classroom.

The public school system serving the local K-12population is the Antioch Unified School District(AUSD). More than 18,500 students are enrolled ingrades K-1. AUSD has 13 elementary schools, fourmiddle schools, two comprehensive high schools,three specialized high schools, two alternative highschools and one K-8 facility. It also offers a homeschooling program, adult education courses andother unique programs to fit the needs of allstudents.

AUSD strives to offer a variety of high schoolacademic opportunities for students. The district’sgoal is to increase the college and career readinessof all students by offering Smaller LearningCommunities of Linked Leaning Pathwaysthroughout the district. Students are able to select an

academic program based on their educationalinterests. These unique programs create valuableopportunities for all students. Through qualityinstruction and curriculum, AUSD’s goal is to ensurethat all students graduate with the knowledge andskills necessary to make successful transitions tocollege and careers. Studies have shown thatstudents benefit from Linked Learning Pathwaysbecause they can connect academics to the realworld, see career options and understand what isrequired to succeed after high school. This approachhas made Antioch a leader in educational excellenceadmired throughout the country.

Joining the area’s public schools are numerousdaycare and preschool centers, as well as privatecollege preparatory and parochial institutions offeringprimary and/or secondary academic programs. Thearea’s private and parochial schools present aunique learning environment that serves as a greatalternative to public education.

As for higher learning, opportunities are right atAntioch residents’ doorsteps. Graduating seniors,

Carrington CollegeCalifornia also offers six-week online programs inother career areas.

For those looking to explore entry-level healthcarepositions, Antioch’s Contra Costa Medical CareerCollege (CCMCC) is a first-class choice. CCMCC is aprivate college that provides a multitude of advancedvocational training courses in specialties such asphlebotomy, clinical medical assisting, medicaladministrative assisting/billing and coding and IVcertification.

In addition to these colleges, Antioch is served by LosMedanos College in Pittsburg and at its BrentwoodCenter. Through LMC’s Pittsburg campus andBrentwood Center, students are invited to enroll ingeneral education requirements, transfer courses,computer science and business courses and associatedegree programs in various programs of study.

Antioch’s local medical community iscomprised of a large collection of high-quality healthcare professionals offeringcare in virtually every medical field. Majorhospital campuses, specialty clinics,
