ANSYS DesignModelerPowerful Geometry Modeling for Engineering Simulation

Creating design models is a core part o the product development pro-

cess and the frst step in the simulation process. These models can be

o geometry orms representing actual design details, or they can be

approximations o the designs using simplifed components like beams

and plates. Besides being an essential component o engineering simu-

lation, geometry also links engineering simulation with design and

manuacturing, and thereby plays a critical role in Simulation Driven

Product Development™.

With direct interaces to all major computer-aided design (CAD) sys-

tems, support o additional readers and translators, and an integrated

geometry modeler exclusively ocused on analysis, ANSYS oers the

most comprehensive geometry handling solutions or engineering

simulation in an integrated environment.

The industry-leading ANSYS® Workbench™ computer-aided engi-

neering (CAE) integration environment is CAD-neutral and supports

bidirectional, direct, associative interaces with all major CAD systems.

The environment includes a eature-based solid modeler, which can be

used to create a parametric geometry rom scratch or prepare an exist-

ing CAD geometry or analysis. These tools provide a parametric andpersistent modeling environment that is ideal or perorming design

optimization.

Automation with the Flexibility to Customize

Parametric and Persistent

Geometry modeling in the ANSYS Workbench environment is

highly automated and also provides users the exibility to customize

according to the type o analysis or application. The eature-based,

parametric ANSYS® DesignModeler™ sotware can be used to cre-

ate parametric geometry rom scratch or to prepare an existing CAD

geometry or analysis. It includes automated options or simplifcation,

cleanup, repair and deeaturing. Simulation oten demands unique

modeling capabilities that typical CAD operations do not require.Thereore, these capabilities are either lacking in CAD systems or

implemented in a ashion that is not optimum or perorming

simulation.

ANSYS DesignModeler sotware provides unique modeling unctions

or simulation that include parametric geometry creation, concept

model creation, CAD geometry modifcation, automated cleanup and

repair, and several custom tools designed or uid ow, structural and

other types o analyses.

Parametric Geometry Creation

Advanced Technology, Process Compression

The ANSYS DesignModeler product supports a sketch-and-extrude

approach to creating parametric geometry. It oers extrude, revolve, sweep, chamer and other standard geometry creation eatures to

create ully parametric models. In addition, it supports primitives and

Boolean operations or creating a new geometry or adding comple-

mentary geometry to an existing model. These models can be used

with any core simulation product rom ANSYS, or with the ANSYS®

DesignXplorer™ product or perorming design optimization.

Concept Model CreationBeam and Shell Modeling

Concept models are used in a product development process prior to

any detailed CAD geometry being created. These design approxima-

tions, along with simulation results, are extremely useul in making

ast product decisions early in the design cycle, when product costs can

be impacted signifcantly.

Preparing Existing Geometry for Analysis

Advanced Technology, Greater Automation and Process Compression

CAD models are usually intended to accurately represent the exact

intents o the fnal designs and oten lack additional eatures required

or simulation. The ANSYS DesignModeler tool provides these unique

simulation eatures, such as splitting suraces or applying loads,

defning welds or creating regions around models that represent ow

volumes or uid ow analysis.

A CAD model also may contain much more detail than the simulation

process requires, or the detail may not be in the right orm. ANSYS

DesignModeler sotware enables tasks like deleting CAD eatures,

surace modeling. Face and edge merge operations can be used to eas-ily simpliy models by eliminating unnecessary eatures and boundar-

ies, leading to improved meshes and aster solutions. Sew and connect

operations can be used to ensure proper connectivity in models with

gaps and overlaps. Similarly, the ability to select and extend groups o

suraces greatly simplifes the process o closing gaps between parts

ater midsurace extraction. This results in easier modeling o welds, or

example. In addition, several eatures are available or beam modeling,

including support o standard cross sections, user-defned osets, user-

defned cross sections and tools or orientation control.

Automated Cleanup and Repair

Process Compression

Cleanup and repair o problematic geometries are major bottlenecks in

engineering simulation. The cleanup and repair tools in ANSYS Design-

Modeler sotware automatically detect and fx typical problems, such as

small edges, sliver aces, holes, seams, and aces with sharp angles. This

allows geometry models to be prepared or analysis at a ast pace. As

always, analysis settings remain persistent ater these operations and are

updated automatically in response to changes in geometry.

The ANSYS Advantage

With the unequalled depth and unparalleled breadth o ANSYS

engineering simulation solutions, companies are transorming their

leading edge design concepts into innovative products and processes

that work. Today, almost all o the top 100 industrial companies on the

“FORTUNE Global 500” invest in engineering simulation as a key strat-

egy to win in a globally competitive environment. They choose ANSYS

as their simulation partner, deploying the world’s most comprehensive

multiphysics solutions to solve their complex engineering challenges.

The engineered scalability o solutions rom ANSYS delivers the ex-ibility customers need, within an architecture that is adaptable to the

processes and design systems o their choice. No wonder the world’s

most successul companies turn to ANSYS — with a track record o 40

years as the industry leader — or the best in engineering simulation.
