Anger over African CaviarBLACK Caviar is set to contest a 1000m race atDurbanville in South Africa tomorrow night, spark-ing international outrage.
Australian racing authorities are up in arms thatan unraced South African two-year-old colt has beennamed after the world’s most famous racehorse.
There is a tacit agreement among racing jurisdic-tions around the world to protect the names ofelite racehorses.
For example, you won’t see Phar Lap’s name usedin England, while Australian owners will not be ableto register Frankel.
Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys saidhe would take steps to ensure the identity of Austra-lia’s greatest sprinter was protected.

PHIL Hughes risks beingdropped for the third timein his career after hislatest duck yesterday leftAustralia on the brink ofan embarrassing inningsdefeat in the second Testagainst India.
At stumps on day three,Australia (2-74) are goingdown the gurgler, stilltrailing by 192 runs afterIndia’s innings of massdestruction finally endedyesterday at 503 at RajivGandhi Stadium.
First-Test tormentorRavi Ashwin struck twicein the final session, bowl-ing David Warner (26) andHughes (0) around theirlegs to leave Ed Cowan(26) and Shane Watson (9)fighting to hang on in theHyderabad furnace.
Today will be D-Day forAustralia’s batsmen. Per-form, and they might pulloff Mission Impossibleand save this Test. Perish, and some careers may gobust before the Ashes.
Hughes is in the lattercategory. In his thirdincarnation as a Test bats-man, he is struggling tocope with the spin in hismaiden series in India.
Coming to the crease at1-56, Hughes lasted nineballs. He now has scoresof 6, 0, 19 and 0.
Another milestonefor untiring GiggsSOCCER
RYAN Giggs is poised toreach yet another milestonein his extraordinary careertoday when he is expected tomake his 1000th appearancein senior football.
The indefatigable Welsh-man took his tally of appear-ances to 999 last month witha goal-scoring turn in a 2-0win at Queens Park Rangersthat helped Manchester Unit-ed stay clear at the top of thePremier League.
That advantage seems des-tined to turn into a 13th Eng-lish league title for Giggs, which would then solidifyhis place as the most decor-ated footballer ever in theEnglish game.
No man can compete withhis 12 league titles and he hasalso amassed two ChampionsLeague trophies, four FACup titles and three LeagueCup winners’ medals, as wellas a clutch of other prizes, inhis illustrious 22-year OldTrafford career.
A willowy winger when heblazed on to the scene in theearly-1990s, Giggs has refinedhis game in recent years andnow operates more oftenthan not as an elegant mid-field playmaker.
Giggs is 40 in Novemberbut last week he penned anew one-year contract whichwill keep him playing at OldTrafford until June 2014.
Ahead of the big Champ-ions League clash with RealMadrid in Manchester to-night (NT time), teammate
Rafael da Silva says the Unit-ed players continue to be as-tonished by Giggs’s ability.
‘‘He is an unbelievableplayer,’’ Rafael said.
‘‘Every game you see him,he works hard, scores, makesassists. It is getting boring. He is just such a good player.
‘‘He is the same in train-ing; he just loves to play thegame,’’ he said.
‘‘He is one of the topplayers I have played with.He gives us experience, con-fidence, and when you are
feeling bad he comes andhelps you, especially youngplayers.’’
United manager AlexFerguson added: ‘‘What can Isay about Ryan that hasn’t al-ready been said? He is a mar-vellous player and an excep-tional human being. Ryan isan example to us all, the wayin which he has, and con-tinues to, look after himself.’’
His appearances include931 United games, 64 forWales and four for the Olym-pic team.

FORGET the Roosters’Sonny Bill Williams, SouthSydney are ready to unleashtheir own NRL goliath inThursday’s season-opener inthe form of a fit and firingGreg Inglis.
Never before has Inglisentered a season more pre-pared to wreak havoc, team-mate John Sutton describingsome of his pre-season workas freakish ahead of thederby against arch-rivals theSydney Roosters.
‘‘He’s been freakish attraining and on the field thelast few weeks,’’ Sutton said.
‘‘(He gives the players)heaps of confidence.
‘‘When he is bringing theball back, he’s 110kg – he getsa 30-metre run-up beforehe meets the line and he isnot stopping.
‘‘He gets all the boys buzz-ing and he drives our team.’’
While they play vastlydifferent roles, the clashbetween Inglis and Williamsreunites two of the NRL’smost impressive physicalspecimens. Both stand in thevicinity of 195cm and 105kg –and have the ability to off-load in traffic.
With no end-of-season Testtour or off-season surgery,Inglis is rested and injury-free heading into a season forthe first time since his earlydays at Melbourne.
He has also had a full off-season to grow into the full-back role.
