MATCH report
United Services 2 Petersfield Town 3
PETERSFIELD got their Hampshire County Youth League campaign off to a winning start by coming from behind twice to beat United Services on Sunday.
The young Rams have taken some heavy beatings in recent seasons at HMS Tem-eraire, struggling to try and pick up a victory against strong home teams in the past.
But they made up for all of those by grabbing three points from their first league
game of the new season during the week-end.
It was a fairly even game with both sides battling hard to get the upper hand and there were some good finishes for the goals by both teams.
Petersfield continued to trouble their defence and created the chances to win.
Alex Macri and a double from Alfred Collins gave Petersfield the three points and put them third in the table after the first round of matches.

GOOD evening to everyone attending today’s match against Hamworthy United. I would like to wish all of their officials, players and supporters, as well as the match of-ficials, a warm welcome to Petersfield.
Tonight it is the turn of our youth team to be in the spotlight with this FA Youth Cup tie. It is a chance to show our supporters what they can do and may be give people a glimpse of what the future holds.
I am very excited by the potential this year’s youth team squad has. Manager Thom Stone and coach Andy Field-Millard have done an excellent job in preparing their team for the new season.
I was delighted to watch them win their first league game of the season at United Services on Sunday after-noon. It was a very impressive performance by our youth team and there were a number of players who showed that if they continue their development, they will be more than capable of pushing for a spot in our reserve team squad and even the first team in the future.
Tonight is an opportunity to show again what these youngsters can do. If you can get through a few rounds of this competition, Football League sides await and the opportunity to put yourselves up against clubs who have large academy facilities at their disposal.
We must not forget that this is a prestigious national cup competition as well – it is an honour for our club to be able to take part in a contest like this and we will be doing everything we can to progress through to the next round this evening.
Please give the youngsters the same vocal and positive support you give to our first team on a regular basis. You make a huge difference on Southern League matchdays and the youth team will appreciate your backing tonight.
GRAEME MOIR, CHAIRMAN
CUP history
THE FOOTBALL Association Youth Challenge Cup is run by the Football Association for under-18 sides.
Only those players between the age of 15 and 18 on August 31 of the current season are eligible to take part.
The competition is dominated by the youth sides of professional teams, mostly from the Premier League, but attracts over 400 entrants from throughout the country each season.
At the end of the Second World War the FA had decided to organise a Youth Champi-onship for county associations considering it the best way to stimulate the game among those youngsters not yet old enough to play senior football.
The matches did not attract large crowds but outstanding players were selected for youth internationals and thousands were given the chance to play in a national con-test for the first time.
In 1951 it was realised that a competi-tion for clubs would probably have a wider appeal. The FA Youth Challenge Cup during season 1952-53 was restricted to the youth teams of clubs, both professional and ama-teur, who were members of the FA.
The notion of a youth cup was thought of by Sir Joe Richards, the then president of the Football League.
He initially put forward the idea to the league clubs but they were not enthused.
Richards then took the idea to the Football Association who liked the idea and created the competition in the same year.
The Youth Cup trophy itself was pur-chased by the Football League during World
War Two. However, they never found a use for it.
Football League secretary Fred Howarth found the trophy in a cupboard at the Star-kie Street office and handed it over to the Football Association.
Manchester United are the competi-tion’s most successful club, winning it ten times. The current holders of the trophy are Chelsea.
The tournament has served as a spring-board into the professional game for many top British players.
The likes of George Best, John Barnes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney, Theo Walcott, Daniel Sturridge, Jack Wilshere, Adam Johnson and Gareth Bale had all won the tournament or played in the final during their playing careers.
The first final of the competition was won by Manchester United in 1953 when they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 9-3.
United dominated the early years of the new competition by winning the first five finals in a row.
They lead the table for most FA Youth Cup wins with ten successful campaigns, with Arsenal in second place with seven wins and Chelsea third with six wins.
Chelsea have dominated the competition in recent years almost as much as Manches-ter United did when the contest was first created.
The west Londoners have lifted the FA Youth Cup trophy four times in the last six seasons.
FA Youth Cup has helped to launch careers of many top international footballers
