Message from the Prior

Message fromthe Chief Executive

As Prior for Wales, I have been immensely proud of all that we have achieved together over the last six years.

It’s been a busy year for everyone at St John Cymru Wales, with volunteers completing an extraordinary 200,000 hours of voluntary service.

We have seen many positive changes and our membership has gone from strength to strength.

This is my last full term as Prior and I would like to give my thanks to our staff and trustees who continue to support St John in the most remarkable ways.

I particularly wish to thank our CEO, Keith Dunn OBE, for all his support, advice and help during both my time as Prior and Chancellor.

I would like to wish the new Prior, Sir Paul Williams OBE, KStJ, DL and board of trustees every success for the future.

Most of all I’d like to express my sincere thanks to all of the volunteers who give up their time freely each year to support local communities in Wales.

We trained over 28,000 people in the workplace, schools and local communities and have given people the confidence to know what to do in an emergency situation.

This annual review will demonstrate the positive impact we continue to have on lives in Wales and confirms our place as the country’s leading first aid charity.

As we look to the future, I’d like to

thank the Prior, Dan Clayton-Jones, as he stands down in 2017 along with a number of trustees who have served for the last six years. I’d also like to thank our staff for their hard work and support.

Lastly, may I thank our volunteers for their continued dedication and commitment to helping others.

Keith Dunn, OBE, KStJChief Executive

Our strategic direction was developed to ensure we effectively meet the needs of the community, support our volunteers and build on our reputation as Wales’ leading first aid charity.

In 2016 we focused on our corecharitable fundraising activities, raised the profile of the organisation and reviewed our event management system to make us the first choice provider for partner organisations.

We invested in new vehicles and equipment, reviewed our youth programmes and offered more courses to local communities.

We also asked volunteers to take part in a census to gain a better understanding of the challenges they face and have begun to implement positive changes.

You can download the 2015-2020 Strategic Direction from our website at www.stjohnwales.org.uk.

Shaping the future of the organisation

Strategic direction

As we strive ahead into another year, we look at how our strategic direction is taking shape.

Volunteers Shirley Gittoes and Karen Edwards from Llandrindod Wells Division, taught all pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 plus the entire sixth form at the school in just seven days.

The free training was delivered as part of a month-long campaign to raise awareness of the importance of first aid. The charity along with volunteers created over 3,000 new life savers across Wales.

Assistant Headteacher, Mrs. Elin Ennis, commented: “We look forward to working with St John Cymru Wales again next September where we can build on the skills of our pupils and staff and hopefully be the first school in Wales to have every single pupil in the school trained in first aid.”

Pupils from Builth Wells High School were taught vital life saving lessons as part of St John Cymru Wales’ annual Save a Life September campaign.

Life saving lessonsSave a Life September helps to train over 350 school pupils from Builth Wells

Prior for Wales and Hospitaller visit Badger teaches fellow pupils first aid skills

They met with medical staff and spoke to the team about the outreach program. The hospital treated over 125,000 outpatients in 2016 including performing over 4,800 major operations.

The Prior and Hospitaller also had an opportunity to visit a newly opened clinic in Hebron and

see the progress of the newest clinic in the Muristan area which sits inside the Old City, where St John had its first hospital 1,000 years ago.

It is hoped that the clinic will be able to treat over 5,500 patients each year. Alongside the clinic is a peace garden, museum and tree of hope.www.stjohneyehospital.org

St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital

Lillie-Mae savesthe day!

The Prior for Wales, Dan Clayton-Jones OBE, and the Hospitaller, Dr Akram Baig, visited the Eye Hospital to see the life changing work that takes place in the region.

Lillie-Mae Wyman, aged 10 from Griffithstown Division, set up a first aid club at her local school in Newport.

Lillie-Mae joined Badgers at the age of 5. She loved the activities and went onto complete the ‘Super Badger’ award.

After starting at a new school in May 2016, the Headmistress, Mrs. Pritchard, heard about Lillie-Mae’s interests and asked her to run a club.

The first aid club runs on a Monday

lunch time for Years 3 and 4. It deals with a variety of first aid topics from dressing wounds to CPR.

Lillie-Mae says: “I’m really enjoying this role and I hope to inspire others to get involved with first aid and to try new things. I’ve achieved so much as a Badger and this has made me a more motivated person. I can’t wait to become a Cadet!”

First aid awareness project hits the mark

The programme was designed by St John Cymru Wales and is delivered by PCSOs who have been trained by us to deliver our first aid awareness course.

The PCSOs are provided with a presentation, lesson plans with suggested training activities and an activity pack to leave with the class

teacher so the children can reinforce their learning after the session.

The PCSOs and schools that we have spoken to have been very positive about the sessions, stating that they felt the pupils have gained valuable skills that will benefit them through life.

Police partnership teaches over 11,000

Our partnership with Dyfed–Powys, Gwent and South Wales Police to teach basic first aid awareness to school children has reached over 11,000 pupils since it was initiated in 2014.

Organ donors awarded for the gift of life

Twenty four families were invited to have their loved ones honoured for giving the gift of life by donating their organs for transplant.

Each family received the Order of St John Award given in the name of The Queen. The award is in the form of a specially designed pin inscribed with the words: ‘Add life, give hope’ and a special citation.

The ceremony was the fourth annual event organised jointly by St John Cymru Wales and NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).

The pins were presented by British Lions and Wales Captain, Sam Warburton and the Prior for St John Cymru Wales, Dan Clayton-Jones, OBE.

Relatives receive special recognition

Families from all over Wales gathered at the Principality Stadium in September to see their loved ones posthumously honoured.

National First Aid Competition takes place

Competitions are a proud tradition at St John Cymru Wales. The event offers Badgers, Cadets and Adult members the opportunity to practice their first aid skills in simulated real-life emergency situations so where better to hold the event than at a Stadium where many of our duties take place.

The winners were:• Badgers – William Dowling & Sara

Davison from Gwent County• Cadet Novice – Cerys Evans

& Kaitlin Cook from West Glamorgan County

• Cadet – Rhys Baldwin, Laura Jolliffe, Molly Mitchell & Callista Dowling from Gwent County

• Adult – Ruth Bryant & Sharon Thomas from Dyfed County

Volunteers test their first aid skills

The annual first aid competition for national competitors was held at Cardiff City Football Stadium in July.

Mission to IndiaVolunteers deliver first aid training to remote communities in Northern India

The 11 day expedition, led by Des Kitto and Marion Powell, saw volunteers train 1,000 people including school children, crèche workers, medical students, doctors and district nurses.

A Principal from one of the schools in the area said: “Children live at the school and it is our duty to protect them from risk. Incidents rise significantly in the monsoon season and the ability to get to a hospital

is difficult.” The school has added first aid to the curriculum as a life skill for Years 9 and 10. A Saturday pupil-led school first aid club has also been developed enabling pupils to receive educational grades in first aid as part of their overall qualifications.

The group also provided medical and training equipment that had been donated from the UK.

In October a group of thirteen members travelled to Dharamsala in Northern India to teach first aid to a Tibetan settlement.

National Cadet of the Year Competitions

Young volunteers shine at St John

We have 1,300 cadets aged 10-17 who undertake the Grand Prior programme, aimed at setting the foundations for those who want to pursue a career in health or social care.

To become National Cadet of the Year, cadets compete against each other at county and national level. The tasks are designed to enable

the judging panel to identify essential qualities such as leadership, communication, commitment, creativity and the ability to inspire.

This year we welcomed new Cadet of the Year, Georgia Mills of Carmarthen Division and Deputy Cadet of the Year, Katherine Davies of Clydach, to represent the charity.

Each year we select a Cadet of the Year and Deputy Cadet of the Year who undertake duties at special events around the country.

Projects helping to support communities

2016 saw us work with Hywel Dda University Health Board for the first time with a new Tenby hospital summer service. The first aid service for residents and visitors to Tenby ran from July to September. It was a great success and in total 359 patients were treated at the drop-in centre.

This year also saw the launch of our Caring Caller scheme. The role

aims to provide support to patients discharged from Cardiff and Vale hospitals and signpost them to services that may help them remain independent and prevent further hospital admissions.

On average 20 calls were made each week to patients who were then put in touch with local services such as befriending groups to help improve social inclusion.

Patient Transport go the extra mile

This was the busiest year yet for Patient Transport Services with the development of a summer hospital and the Caring Caller scheme.

Royal seal of approval for new HQHRH Duchess of Gloucester opened the new Bridgend-Pencoed Headquarters

Her Royal Highness met with Badgers to talk about their latest projects and witnessed a first aid demonstration in the courtyard.

A plaque was unveiled at the ceremony and the Duchess was presented with a posy.

Volunteers at Bridgend-Pencoed want to ensure that the whole community benefits from the centre that will provide much needed services for the area such as first aid training and volunteering for young people and adults.

HRH Duchess of Gloucester and other dignitaries including First Minister Carwyn Jones attended the opening of the new Bridgend-Pencoed Headquarters in September.

Over 100 pupils from Cardiff, Swansea and Neath were invited to take part in the WRU training sessions at the National Centre of Excellence at the Vale Resort.

Each session trained up to 30 pupils in basic first aid including how to call an ambulance, what to do if someone chokes, how to put

someone in the recovery position and how to perform CPR.

The programme aims to help children develop new skills and build their confidence. The students also had an opportunity to watch the Welsh squad train and meet some of the players.

St John Cymru Wales continued working in partnership with the Welsh Rugby Union in 2016 to teach children first aid.

Our centenary yearEstablished in 1918, St John Cymru Wales provided the first ambulance service for the people of Wales

St John Cymru Wales is Wales’ leading first aid charity and our work is as valuable today as it was 100 years ago when our volunteers were rescuing soldiers on the battlefield during World War I.

Supported by over 4,000 volunteers, we have continued to deliver frontline services in the heart of Welsh communities. We also give vital support to our emergency services, help keep people safe and care for over 9,000 people every year.

Our Centenary Appeal will help us to continue to work towards achieving our vision of having a first aider in every home and enable us to continue supporting our volunteers and members of the public across Wales through first aid training and first response services.

This year we trained over 28,000 people in first aid. We want to provide children and adults with the confidence and skills they need to respond in an emergency so they could make a real difference to someone’s life.

Our plans for 2018St John Cymru Wales’ centenary year gives us the perfect opportunity to celebrate, shout about our work and demonstrate the difference we make to so many. Look out for key activity around the appeal taking place throughout next year.

We will be bringing our history to life through community engagement, telling our story and holding some spectacular events, which will be built on our current activity with some exciting new additions in the 2018 calendar.

Since then our volunteers have continued to dedicate their lives to helping others and our services have supported people through some of the country’s worst disasters.

Looking forward...Sir Paul WilliamsWe welcome a new Prior in 2017

The new Prior for Wales, Sir Paul Williams OBE, said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be invested as the next Prior for the Priory for Wales. This role is hugely significant especially at a time when St John Cymru Wales is approaching its centenary year.

“I am looking forward to helping to

strengthen the charity’s position as the leading first aid charity in Wales, something which would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers.

“I would also like to thank the outgoing Prior, Mr Dan Clayton-Jones OBE, for his tireless work and commitment over the last six years.”

His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester, in his capacity as Grand Prior of the Order of St John, will appoint Sir Paul Williams OBE, KStJ, DL as Prior for Wales with effect from St John’s Day on 24th June 2017.

Badger saves baby brother’s lifeRoxy-Marie Jones wins life saving award

Roxy and her little brother, Harley-John, almost 2, were staying with their grandparents last summer when Harley had a seizure.

Roxy knew exactly what to do thanks to her first aid training at her local St John Badgers group. She removed the dummy from Harley’s mouth and put him in the recovery position while her

grandparents dialed 999 for an ambulance. Harley was taken to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth where he made a full recovery.

It’s thanks to our generous donors that we’re able to train thousands of young people like Roxy every year in life saving first aid skills. Thank you for your continued support.

Roxy Jones, a 6 year old from Llanidloes, Powys, was awarded for her quick thinking and first aid skills.
