Welcome to the Summer 2015 edition of Babi Cymru

Babi CYMRU

Entering parenthood is a life-changing and exciting event. A new chapter in your life, but it can be overwhelming with so much information and choice. How to prepare for the birth? Who can help my body recover from the miracle Ive just put it through?!

This is the reason we (Aletia, Laura and Zoe-Lisa) created Babi Cymru - to help you find companies to make life a little easier, more fun and helping you to make and capture your lovely memories. As parents ourselves and owners of pregnancy, baby and child-focused businesses, we know only too well the pressures of juggling work, home and play. We have been working with parents and their little ones for many years and have also worked with many of the advertisers that are featured in Babi Cymru, so were pleased to pass on our personal recommendations to you.

Learning to get to the side, hold on, get out and/or swim could save a childs life one day. Introducing children to water at a very young age also helps prevent a fear of water developing later.

With childhood obesity levels still worryingly high, swimming is a great way of getting little ones exercising from a young age. Many parents also find that handling their baby in water is great for them, too especially if theyre anxious about water or cant swim and this new-found confidence also often transfers onto land.

It develops their learning skillsResponding to repetitive voice commands can sharpen a babys mental skills and increase their levels of understanding. A German study found that swimming babies had advanced motor development, social skills and intelligence.

It enhances their wellbeingWarm water relaxes babies, and swimming stimulates their appetite - for mum and dad, the good news is improved sleeping and eating patterns!

It provides structureWeekly swimming classes contribute to structuring a parents week and their day, providing a regular fun and social activity. Socialising (and empathising) with other new parents is also great for helping combat post-natal depression.

Special and additional needsAs well as helping with muscle

water is a great leveller and can help

children have fun within a non-competitive environment.

Premature babiesSwimming can help premature babies catch up on any stages of motor development they may have missed, while increased resistance in water will help build their strength and muscle tone. And because it stimulates all of the senses, it can help if a babys prematurity has resulted in any sensory deficits.

What exactly is Caf Junior?

Caf Junior has for several years now been a

sophisticated play cafe exclusively for families

with children from 0-5 years old. It diers from soft

play venues as, wherever mum or dad is sitting,

they can see the children who, importantly, are

playing at eye level. Alongside the play and food

oerings, there are regular classes and activities

held, and you can hold a children's party here,

taking the strain

o u t o f t h e

organising. And

let's face it - not

having to clean

up your house

a f te rwards i s

always a bonus.

What has been developed at the caf?

Over the last couple of years we have been growing

the business, providing additional services and

features. Our overriding ethos is to expand into

areas which make the life of mums (and dads, of

course) easier, which inuenced the launch of

Family Bistro.

Parents can have a date night out without having to

incur the cost of babysitting. And there aren't

many places where you don't have to restrict the

children to sitting at the table, so they can race

around whilst parents get a bit of their social life

back with a restaurant-quality meal. In fact we

have a dedicated member of sta to read the little

ones a bedtime story and give them a milky bed-

time drink. You don't get that at other restaurants!

And we have exciting developments for our

evening trade, due to be rolled out soon.

Oh and the gym of course. Gym and Junior,

for truly family-friendly tness, was launched

last year. It's been a great success.

There's a real buzz about Caf Junior and

Gym and Junior at the moment tell us

more.

As part of our holistic approach to supporting

families we opened Gym and Junior after

talking to parents and grandparents in our

caf about what services they needed, and

then when the idea of the gym was gaining

interest, what they liked and disliked about

existing gyms. It chimed with my experience

believe me, I don't need an excuse not to go

to the gym! I hate the mirrors and what I call

lycra-contests. And with 3 young children in

tow it was virtually impossible to nd and pay

for child-care for me to get to the gym.

It's proved so popular that within 3 months of

its launch Gym and Junior has already won

awards.

We've been delighted with the recognition of

our concept, with a triple whammy of awards

Zo -Lisa Blackler, who runs multiple-award winning Caf Junior and

Gym and Junior in Fanny Street, Cathays, tells us about the success

of, and philosophy behind, the Cardi-based businesses.

recognition nalists in the health category of

Cardi Life Awards, chosen by Theo Paphitis (of

Dragon's Den fame) as one of his favourite ideas

for his SBS awards, and most recently honoured to

be winners of Best New Business in the 2015

national Networking Mummies Awards. Jacqueline

Gold, CEO of Ann Summers, was one of the judges,

and part of their feedback was that it is a brilliant

idea and they wished it had been around years ago.

This validation makes me really proud of the team

and the hard work which has gone into it.

Where did the actual idea originate?

To be honest, it was as a result of a couple of painful

personal episodes. A pelvic condition put me on

crutches during my 3rd pregnancy and I put on 4

stones in weight. And then some random woman,

totally unknown to me, put a comment on a social

networking site: 'As far as I can see, the woman

who runs it (Caf Junior) is a mummy who thinks

she's yummy, and as far as I can see she has zero

vision beyond that.' That hurt. I'd be lying if I said I

didn't cry. But she did me a favour, because I wrote

those words in my diary, put them into my phone,

used them as a screen saver everywhere. And I

thought you don't know me, and I WILL succeed.

So it drove me to think of the novel idea of Gym and

Junior. And luckily,

when I presented

the business plan to

supportive from the

delighted that they

chose to back us.

If we walked in to Gym and Junior now, what

would be dierent from other gyms?

As well as mirrors concept and totally relaxed and

supportive environment, the play area is right in

front of parents exercising, and children have their

own equipment so they can mimic the adults

exercising.

as tness. Our instructors

could not be more family-

focused, and in fact we

partnered with Emily Lintern-

Schewitz, who is an expert in the eld of healing

Diastasis Recti (the separation of tummy

muscles often associated with pregnancy), to

bring in additional skills and expertise, as part

of our ethos to partner with like-minded

parent-preneurs.

Yesterday I walked into the gym and someone

had written on the white board:

This is an awesome gym and the play area is

great.

And a quote from a couple who use our gym

regularly, Carlton and Natasha, reinforces it

for me:

At the end of the day we are just regular

people trying to do something for our bodies

without the stress of competing with other

people and that sums up how comfortable it

feels at Gym and Junior.

Things like that knowing the positive impact

we are having on the lives of parents - make

the stresses and strains of running businesses

worthwhile.

So what next?

We are now franchising

both Caf Junior and

Gym and Junior. The

phenomenal external

recognition we have had

has helped us reach

receiving lots of enquiries. We predict 2015

will be a year of rapid growth and it's exciting

to think that soon we could be in every city.

3 Choose the best time of day for them: its really important to choose the right time of day: you dont want your child to be tired or to have just woken up, to be hungry, or not well. Its all about them having a couple of great experiences that should help in the future.

3Snacks/treats:bribery often helps!3Start when theyre young: if they visit regularly

(ideally before they turn two) then they get used to coming to the salon and its not so strange to them. Sometimes the older they get and the more aware that they become, the harder it can be.

3Bring something they already enjoy:If your child has a DVD that really holds their interest then feel free to bring it, as it may not be in our collection. Or bring a little teddy friend along.

3Keeping them feeling comfortable: you may want to pack a spare T-shirt. Some children really dont want to wear a gown and sometimes even if they do, they wriggle - then the hair can get on their clothes and make them feel a little itchy.

3Prepare them: talk to them about it in the days running up to the haircut. That way its not a total shock when they come in, and they have an idea of what to expect. Its great to tell them that they get to sit in a car and watch Peppa Pig!

Its perfectly natural: a study of how our ancestors used to live shows us that our babies are meant to be carried and kept close to their parents - being left alone would have meant life-threatening dangers.

Health benefits for baby: carrying your baby in a sling helps them to feel secure and safe, giving them confidence and encouraging earlier independence. It reduces the risk of flat head syndrome and promotes healthy hip development, whilst also improving general muscle tone. Body temperature, heartbeat and breathing are all regulated, whilst the constant gentle massaging of babies tummies can help colic and digestion too!

And for mums and dads: there are many benefits for parents too, including improved access when you are out and about (stairs are not a problem for a sling), increased milk production for breast-feeding mums, allowing you to be hands-free, and even providing a bit of me-time when baby is asleep. Judith Souter, leader of Little Notes Cardiff, a music class for tots, tells us about the positive effects live music can have on children - and their parents!Having been trained at the Royal Academy of Music, I have always been aware of the joy music-making brings, but was blown away by how much my daughter interacted when I played an instrument to her: from very early days, she would begin to dance. The calming impact of lullabies became apparent quickly, too, as did the power of music to lift tired moods - hers and ours! I became eager, and researched, to see if other youngsters responded to music in the same way as Hannah and so, with professional friends Mark and Lou Bradbury, Little Notes Ltd was born. Three years on, its a thriving business. And whats more, the model is being adopted by musicians across the UK - so Hannah and the researchers must have got something right!
