Tulsa Area United Way 2007 Board of Directors

This 2007 Annual Report to the community culminates yet another year of milestones for the Tulsa Area United Way. Throughout its history, our United Way has been blessed to be supported by thousands of volunteers whose sense of volunteerism has, in many respects, been the United Way’s single greatest asset. For that, we thank each and every one of them. Our 2007 campaign exceeded its stated goal of $23.3 million by raising $23,771,072. This success will allow us to fully fund virtually all original recommendations made by the twenty-three Community Investments Panels.

We were also able to continue the Venture Grant program used for funding new and innovative programs for our community. We owe a very special thanks to Chair Gary Paxton, his Campaign Cabinet and the thousands of donors at the corporate, employee and individual level who made this possible. An additional challenge in 2007 was the recent ice storm. Tulsa’s generous spirit was once again so evident as the many community-based agencies and volunteers extended aid, support and assistance to those significantly impacted by the weather. Particular thanks are owed to our partnership with the Tulsa Community Foundation and Bank of Oklahoma in the development of the Ice Storm Relief Fund. Through this collaboration, we were successful in raising close to $750,000 to assist nonprofits offset unexpected expenses they encountered as a result of their involvement in these recovery efforts. The past year has been marked by extraordinary levels of hard work, perseverance and focus. More than 2,500 people were helped every day in 2007 by our TAUW agencies and that’s the true measure of our year’s accomplishment. From the thousands who received help to the thousands who provided help, please accept our thanks and appreciation for making this past year one to remember.

We thank the Tulsa World and the Lorton family for donating the 2007 Annual Report as well as other advertising during the year. All efforts were made for accuracy in this Annual Report. TAUW regrets any errors or omissions. Please notify us with any corrections.

The Tulsa Area United Way values the trust of each and every contributor. We endeavor to not only take care of the dollars you provide but to also keep our administrative costs at a minimum so that more of each dollar goes to the services our member agencies provide. We would like to take this time to say thank you to the key community volunteers that give of their time to oversee all financial aspects of the organization, from the investment policies to the internal budget and annual audit. As Treasurer & Finance Chair, let me assure you, Tulsa and surrounding area, that we have completed another year that meets our high standards of efficiency, effectiveness and accountability.

The mission of the Community Investments (CI) Process is to measurably improve the lives of people in our community by investing TAUW’s resources in efficiently-managed agencies which provide programs that effectively help at-risk individuals and families develop and sustain self-sufficiency. In 2007, over 225 volunteers representing 99 companies donated over 8,000 hours to determine the best investment strategy for TAUW funds in 2008. Each agency was evaluated on four key areas:

1) At-risk characteristics of clients served by the program; 2) Program effectiveness as indicated by measurable client benefits;3) Fiscal and administrative capabilities of the agency; and 4) Other resources leveraged to support programs and services.

Here’s a quick overview representing 40 hours per volunteer:• January – recruit volunteers and hold orientation sessions; volunteers participate on 19 Panels in 6 Divisions• February/March – review documentation of 65 agencies’ programs, financial position and services• March/April – make agency site visits; complete comprehensive evaluations • April – agency Executive Director and select Board members make final presentation to answer open questions; Panel determines and prioritizes final recommendations • April/May – Panel Chairs and Vice Chairs meet with Division leaders to prioritize requests within their Division and prepare funding requests to the Steering Committee• Late May – Steering Committee analyzes all Panel and Division level recommendations to determine final investment strategy; request is presented to the Campaign Cabinet resulting in the campaign goal being set with approval by the TAUW Board of Directors• June – celebration to thank volunteers for their time and talents

I would like to personally thank each of our volunteers for their support. I’d also like to thank Gary Paxton for his leadership in exceeding the fundraising goal allowing us to invest even more money into our member agencies.

The Administrative Services Committee, chaired by Mike Rhoads, looks back on 2007 with pride knowing that we continue to meet our mandate of improving organizational effectiveness and implementing plans to meet the needs of staff, space and equipment. Thank you Tulsa and surrounding area for another great year.

The Community Partnerships Committee is chaired by Callie Mitchell. Give teens a stake in the community, and they will become caring leaders. That is the premise behind United Way Teens’ Way program, supported through a collaboration of the Tulsa Area United Way, YMCA of Greater Tulsa and Williams.

The program, administered by the Westside YMCA, is in its third successful year and includes five local schools: Street School, a United Way agency, Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences, Webster, TSST and Victory Christian.

Teens’ Way’s mission is to instill in young people a sense of responsibility to their community through philanthropy. The students determine the greatest needs facing teens, identify agencies with programs to meet those needs, then raise and distribute money to support those programs. Each year, Williams matches dollar-for-dollar the funds the students raise, which doubles the impact of their efforts.

Dan Zaloudek headed the Asset-Based Contributions Committee which is continuing to establish the groundwork to encourage individuals to endow their annual campaign gift or fund other TAUW needs via their wills and estate plans. The Committee is also tasked with growing TAUW’s Legacy Society.

The IT Committee is chaired by Rick Harris. Tulsa IT professionals continue to assist TAUW with technology needs. We couldn’t do it without you, from oversight of IT operations to suggestions of software/hardware configuration and technical support. These volunteer activities continue to allow cost effective operations enabling more of every donor dollar to go to services provided by our member agencies. Thank you committee members.

Organized Labor, chaired by Frank Janowski, increased their TAUW support through event sponsorships, Community Investments panel volunteers, Letter Carriers Food Drive and seven Loaned Executives. American Airlines and TWU Local 514 lent fourteen volunteers to assist with weatherhead repairs after the ice storm.

The Marketing Committee, chaired by Fred Fleischner, produced compelling 2007 campaign materials with an umbrella motif showing how TAUW helps people weather life’s storms. The committee helped promote Rockin’ Docs, a new event giving TAUW greater visibility among the targeted demographic. A redesigned website was also developed for 2008.

2007 Trailblazers

Ten Trailblazer companies were invited to run early campaigns to set the pace for the community-wide campaign. Chaired by Dick Williamson of T.D. Williamson, Inc., these Trailblazers raised over $2.8 million - an overall 17% increase over their 2006 campaigns.

A message from the Campaign ChairGary Paxton Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc.

…It all began with YOU. Those are the words that best describe the reason for the success of the 2007 Campaign. I’ve witnessed the tireless efforts of countless volunteers, Loaned Executives, TAUW staff and member agencies as they all worked together to help us exceed our goal, raising an amazing $23,771,072. The giving nature and commitment of the entire Tulsa area is quite remarkable. Thanks to each company, union, foundation and individual who helped make this such a successful campaign.

Early in 2007, we recruited an impressive Campaign Cabinet who immediately became the heart of the campaign. Their attention to the campaign (while also doing their “real” jobs!) was essential to our success and much appreciated by our 65 agencies. We set our goal in early June based on the recommendation of TAUW’s Community Investments volunteers. We reviewed their recommendation and tempered it with the Cabinet’s assessment of the challenges facing our community. The entire Cabinet reached agreement on an ‘optimistic yet realistic’ goal. It was my charge however, right from the very beginning, to exceed that goal and I was personally very gratified that we surpassed the goal and increased funding to the Tulsa Area United Way agencies. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the members of the Campaign Cabinet for your support. To Bill Grant of The Holmes Organisation, 2008 Campaign Chair, I wish you the very best. By continuing to work together, we can meet the challenges of our community. A special thanks to the Board and my fellow employees at Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group who enabled me to serve as the 2007 Chair. And to all the thousands who contributed – individuals, corporations, organizations, labor unions and foundations – I thank each and every one of you.

Now, let’s set our minds on exceeding expectations in 2008!

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society is the Tulsa Area United Way’s premier giving society. Since its inception in 1987, its generous and distinguished members have stepped forward to demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to positive change in the Tulsa area by making annual personal gifts of $10,000 or more.

The Society takes its name from the French historian and aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville who expressed his admiration of the American tradition of neighbor helping neighbor in his classic treatise “Democracy in America”. The AdT Society has been at the forefront of philanthropic leadership in the Tulsa area for 20 years, beginning with eight members who raised $82,500. Through the efforts of the AdT Steering Committee, chaired by Dan Ellinor, Bank of Oklahoma, N.A., the membership

rose to 213 members whose gifts totaled $3.519 million. Through unparalleled commitment, AdT members reflect extraordinary concern and dedication to

inspiring a better way of life for everyone in our community.

Four members wish to remain anonymous.

Our Tulsa Area United Way’s commitment to care for our community continues far beyond the needs of this year, or this generation, by providing for the future through the Legacy Society, our planned giving program. Through this program, your bequest or special tax-saving gift benefits both you and the Tulsa Area United Way. Your endowment gift can take many forms - from an outright gift to trust arrangements that benefit a surviving spouse; from a bequest under a will to a gift that provides for you and your family. Your gift ensures that your compassion makes a difference today and extends beyond tomorrow. If you have included the Tulsa Area United Way in your estate planning, please let us know so we can recognize you.

These two grants matched, dollar-for-dollar, all new gifts of $500 or more as well as all increases to past Leadership gifts.

We truly appreciate the leadership of these two benefactors who enabled us to raise more than $600,000 in new dollars for our 65 local member agencies. What a wonderful gift!

2007 Leadership Giving Matching Challenge Grant
