A message from the Chairman and President

Gary PaxtonChairman,Board of Directors

Mark R. Graham President and CEO

2008 was a year filled with great pride and immense gratitude for our community’s support. The Tulsa Area United Way and our 63 partner agencies extend a special, heartfelt thank you to the tens of thousands of volunteers and donors who stepped up so generously last year to ensure that 2008 was successful.

Our 2008 campaign exceeded its stated goal of $23.9 million by raising $24,001,223. At a time when every dollar is so critical, these additional dollars raised will help us respond to increasing basic and emergency needs created by the economic downturn. Thanks go to Bill Grant, 2008 Campaign Chair, and his Campaign Cabinet for their extraordinary work and remarkable dedication to our community.

Live United – Give. Advocate. Volunteer. We introduced our new branding strategy in support of year-round efforts to improve our communities and the lives of fellow Tulsans through your gifts of time, money and talent. Working together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow.

So as we begin our 85th anniversary this year, the Tulsa Area United Way is well-prepared to tackle our community’s pressing needs in 2009. We do have real challenges, yet we look forward to this year with much hope for making our Tulsa area a better place for all to live. A community where we all truly Live United!

Tulsa Area United Way History

For 85 years, the Tulsa Area United Way has brought people in the Tulsa area together – people who give so well and so often with compassionate heartsto help take care of thosein need.

First known in 1924 as the Tulsa Community Fund, Tulsans combined 11 health and human service

organizations under one umbrella and ran their inaugural campaign. That very fi rst campaign goal of $238,895 was exceeded by $9,000, establishing a pattern that Tulsa area residents have followed

since. And that campaign lasted only fi ve days.

In 1932, Waite Phillips, one of the largest contributors to the Tulsa Community Fund, donated a three-story building downtown, and Tulsa became one of only a handful of cities where a Fund had a permanent home. This location at 6th and Cheyenne remained the headquarters until 1970 when TAUW moved to its current location, 1430 S. Boulder.

The Depression and World War II posed diffi cult organizational and funding

challenges, but once again, community support was there. In 1943, the Fund’s $600,000 campaign ($309,845 raised by Tulsa Community Fund, $290,155 by the national war effort) supported 22 local agencies, as well as 22 organizations designed for international relief.

During World War II, the organization was known as Tulsa’s War Chest and was affi liated with the National War Fund and United War Chest of Oklahoma. The name of the organization was eventually changed to the Tulsa Community Chest

Tulsa Area United Way History

as a result of community growth in the 50s and early 60s. The fi nal name change was in 1974 to the Tulsa Area United Way with a new logo of a helping hand beneath a rainbow of hope.

In 1988, TAUW raised over $12 million to support 53 partner agencies. That year, a new Venture Grant program was established to fund innovative programs and since its start, has fi nanced initiatives such as the Safe Place Shelter at Youth Services of Tulsa, 2-1-1 Tulsa Helpline and TulsaWORKS at Goodwill.

What began as an idea in 1924 has turned into hundreds of millions of dollars being invested in our community, helping people every day. In 85 years, this incredible community has raised more than $545,273,000 for the six-county area TAUW serves, putting the organization consistently in the top 10% of all United Ways in the nation.

Today, TAUW works to keep strong the safety net of critical health, human and social services to meet the dramatically increased needs. And every year,

more than 200 community volunteers spend thousands of hours evaluating the needs of the community and how best to invest your gifts strategically to positively impact Tulsa’s citizens.

From “Be a Good Neighbor,”to “Tulsa’s No. 1 Job: Giving the United Way,” from “Love Can Move Mountains” to “Your Gift works Wonders,” Tulsans have shown from the beginning that they embody the spirit of what it means to truly “Live United” by giving, advocatingand volunteering.

Message from 2008 Campaign Chair

Bill Grant

President,The Holmes Organisation, Inc.

As you know, 2008 was a roller coaster ride for our nation, our community and our campaign. We had our ups and downs throughout the year but by November, when all was said and done, you came through for the less fortunate and the agencies that serve and care for them.

In August, we were riding high with great campaigns from our Trailblazer companies. Our eight Trailblazer companies raised almost $4 million – a combined 9% over their 2007 campaigns!

Then September struck. As bad economic news swept the media, our campaigns continued… but we definitely saw a slowdown

in communication and activity as companies assessed their own businesses and the local impact of national news.

By mid-October, companies large and small were beginning to report their campaign results – and their community spirit showed through. Companies tried to maximize their commitments even if their businesses were suffering.

November confirmed what a great and caring community we live in. By Unite!, we had matched 2007’s $23.7 million and went over the $24 million mark for just the third time in TAUW history.

Thanks again for Living United.
