A message from the Chairman andthe TAUW President and CEO

In early 2010, the Tulsa Area United Way and our Strategic Planning Committee launched Vision 2013, the new long range strategic plan. This plan became our guiding principle, challenging us to align our annual goals with four very ambitious three-year strategic statements.

As a result, 2010 was a year of significant milestones for the Tulsa Area United Way:

• We reduced operating expenses to 9.38%, earning us a 4-star rating in organizational efficiency by Charity Navigator and putting us in the top 5% of the most efficient United Ways across the United States

• We increased funding and expanded relationships in 4 targeted groups: Small Businesses, Women’s Leadership Council, Planned Giving and the Tocqueville Society. We added almost $2 million new dollars and our performance ranked us nationally in the top 3% for revenue generation of the more than 1,200 United Ways

• We revamped the TAUW messaging and sharpened its focus on our unique value to the community through our investment in the three building blocks for a better life: Education, Financial Stability and Health/Safety

• We became more intentional about our investments in and expectations of our 61 partner agencies by adding one new agency, discontinuing our partnership with two agencies and redirecting close to $1 million in partner agency investments

Our 2010 goal was formidable, the 2nd highest goal in our 86-year history. Yet we exceeded it by $257,252 raising $24,324,803. First and foremost, we owe a very special thanks to Chair Dan Ellinor and his Campaign Cabinet for their extraordinary work.

Our United Way has been supported by tens of thousands of volunteers and donors whose compassionate hearts and immense generosity define our community and embody our mission. For that, we thank each and every one of you.

Over the past 86 years, our United Way has invested more than $590 million in the Tulsa area. We have reached many milestones but there is much work yet to be accomplished. As 2011 begins, we are well-prepared for the challenges of meeting our community’s most pressing needs and building hope for a better tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Don Walker Mark R. Graham2010 Chairman, TAUW PresidentBoard of Directors and CEO

STRENGTHENING OURCOMMUNITYWhat Makes Us Unique?TAUW is the only nonprofit organization in the six-county area funding 61 partner agencies whose critical services deliver the three building blocks to a better life:

Education

Financial Stability

Health/Safety

By focusing on these essential building blocks, community volunteers, along with TAUW, help identify urgent community needs and ensure that all donations are wisely invested to meet the highest identified necessities. The funds target community initiatives and help sustain our 61 partner agencies in providing services for citizens of every age and circumstance, from prenatal to end-of-life, through all stages of their lifetimes.

All contributions have a direct and profound impact on improving the lives of people you know – living in your neighborhood, going to your children’s school, working alongside you every day.

Those combined donations also create a significant economic “return on investment” in this six-county area. A recent research study* shows that our United Way is truly an economic engine for this community:

• For every dollar given, TAUW partner agencies leverage an additional $9.10 from other resources

• TAUW’s investment in partner agencies directly and indirectly supports over 3,734 jobs

• Annual economic impact was $249,573,000

• The collective services of the Tulsa Area United Way partner agencies generated over $22.7 million in tax revenue for our state and community

This is why the Tulsa Area United Way exists: to improve lives and build a stronger community by bringing citizens together to give, advocate and volunteer.

How Your Gift Helped - A Success Story

“When I first started coming to Mabee Red Shield, I was very shy and quiet. I recall being timid around kids who were my age. At the club, I have learned to become a role model for not only the club kids, but also for my siblings. That means that I have to always do the right things in order to be a positive influence for them. I want them to know that whatever they put their mind to they can achieve, just like I did.”

Member of the Salvation Army’s Mabee Red Shield Boys and Girls Club.

An individual was referred to the free tax preparation program at Community Action Project of Tulsa County. He owed money for 1998 taxes and didn’t have the means to pay, so he just stopped filing. CAPTC prepared all of his returns from the previous years to get him caught up with the IRS.

He found that he was actually due a total collective refund of $11,000 after all the back taxes were paid. He shared how he would now be able to remain in his home, purchase a new heating unit for his house and install new plumbing.

12% of TAUW funding is invested in financial stability including: Employment skills training l Homeless prevention l Basic needs supportFinancial education l Foreclosure prevention

2010 CAMPAIGN CHAIR

The 2010 Campaign was a significant community-wide success. From innovative Challenge Grants offered by our community’s leading foundations and QuikTrip to gifts from over 54,000 individuals, the Tulsa community stepped up like never before.

Our Challenge Grant initiative garnered six dollar-for-dollar match opportunities for Leadership Givers ($500 or greater), “step-up” programs encouraged increased gifts, a new foundation gift challenge and targeted giving through our Women’s Leadership Council and Small Business Council.

By the end of November, TAUW had more new Leadership Givers and had many more small business campaigns. Over 75 companies ran new campaigns and 69 companies increased their campaigns by 5% or more. We not only met the $24,067,551 goal but surpassed it by $257,252!

Our fourteen Trailblazer Companies (including partner agencies American Red Cross and Family & Children’s Services) kicked off in early August and, by Day of Caring, they reported campaigns totaling $3,418,468 – $450,545 more than their cumulative 2009 campaigns.

The campaign could not have been successful without the ongoing commitment of the TAUW staff. These 26 dedicated individuals work year-round to assure that the goal is met and the funds raised

go to local agencies and programs that need, and deserve, the funding. The commitment and energy of our 2010 Class of 23 Loaned Executives was indispensible this year. Provided by 17 local firms and labor organizations, our LEs allowed the campaign to reach more companies with the United Way story than ever.

All this success could not have been possible without the support of our area companies and schools as well as labor and government entities encouraging all employees to give of their time, talent and treasure.

And the best news is that, as usual, all the money raised here, stays here.

Thanks again for caring for your community and thank you for Living (and Giving) United!

Sincerely,

Dan EllinorBank of Oklahoma, N.A.
